Just found out I have hearing loss need help

It has been my experience that many places have ALD's (infred or FM systems) and I ALWAYS request them but I was shocked that WDW has "HandHeld Captioning". I've never heard of that, it sounds wonderful IF you can read the words and see the show!

It is only available in MK and EPCOT and the Walt Disney story area in MGM. Works very well and I do like it. ALDs are fine for those they work for but I find I cannot jack the sound high enough the make speech understandable. Plus I find anything set over my ears painful. I am having an FM system set up with earmolds like the kids have but that is primarily for work if I need to interpret in noisy enviroments. Otherwise my aids work fine as long as no one expects me to understand the intercom.

The movies listed at the above are opened captions -- that is, you do not need a window or other decoder to see them. The captions appear at the bottom of the screen, like subtitles (like captions on TV).

I think the open captions are easier to read but would highly recommend either one. It is *SO* awesome to be able to understand everything that's going on in a movie.

Congratulations on getting some good news about hearing aids. I hope you are as pleased with your digital aid as I have been with mine. I really like it!

Since you asked for tips for your audiologist appointment, I would suggest trying the HA in a somewhat noisy environment -- like maybe the cafeteria or parking lot. (Your audiologist will probably suggest that anyway.)

Oh! Another thing that's real important: Ask about Dry Aid. It is a little dehumidifier for your HA. (Moisture can cause the HA to have problems.) It costs about $10 and is well worth it.

I agree. I have good hearing but my wife has bad hearing in one ear. We happen to live in Rochester NY (henrietta to be precise) which is the town RIT and NTID (National Techinal Institue for the Deaf) are in, so our local Regal cinemas has OC movies seven days a week. Which is fairly unusual, from what I have read and seen from the listings at that site. Many movies will be in a theater for a day or two at most, and we get htme for a home week. Makes it so much easier to fit them into hectic schedule. It is great that my wife and I can go out and see movies and she can follow more easily.

We usually go to the OC movies. Last friday we went to the new James Bond and there were more ADS before the previews than previews! Granted I miss the previews when we go see an OC movie (they don't show any) but I would rather miss preview than have to sit through that many ads.

Thanks for the tips on what to ask the audiologist.

Ok so here is another question...I know I know not another question..
Since I will not have hearing aides for this trip to WDW and will be relying on my DH and lip reading should I get a GAC so that during shows I will be able to sit close to the speakers?

Last summer I did get a GAC that allowed me to get out of the sun while waiting in lines. (The meds I am on cause me to burn a little to easily) The GAC was an absolute blessing.

So is my new situation covered under the GAC's?

Ok we leave for Florida in just two days...I so can't believe it. Any last minute tips to give...I am getting a GAC for front seating so I can lipread, my DH said he will be alert and ready to relay messages that I miss, I am going to use the captioning equipment. I got a scooter for my mom to use so she can conserve energy ( she has my disease also), and requested accessible rooms at the WL. So have I missed anything that will assist me in making this trip as magical as all the other trips have been?
And again my thanks to all of you for the support...I am suppose to go to my audiologist tomorrow to begin the hearing aid search...hopefully we will not be iced in. (ice coming down outside right now)
I'll give a full trip report when I get back.

Well the only thing you have missed is how we recognize each other. LIME GREEN RIBBONS. I have a lime green back pack on my power wheelcahir and will have a lime green monkey on my chair as well.
Hope we meet but if we don't have a great time anyway.
