Hi everyone, leaving in 2 weeks, just wanted to make sure I can bring my NY EZ Pass to use for the tolls from MCO to Disney/Universal. (Renting from Alamo) My husband also goes over to Kennedy Space Center. I know there had been some posts about it, but just wanted to make sure one more time. Thank you!

Never knew this. So u don’t need the SUNPASS… one can pick up at the food stores etc ??

Not if you have an EZ Pass compatible transponder. For the last couple years you've been able to use them on 528 out to Canaveral and Melbourne. But as of 5/28/21 EZ pass is accepted everywhere in FL.

I have a PA EZ Pass and it works for the majority of the tolls. They just "bill by plate", (send the invoice to your registration address) for any tolls not covered by EZ Pass.

Rather not deal with bill by plate with a rental car. Reports are all tolls in FL are now EZ Pass compatible. I’ll be bringing my EZ Pass next trip, instead of the Visitor Toll pass I used last trip.

This site says that if the car has two types of transponders, both will be charged. Does this mean that if the rental car has a sun pass, it will be charged anyway even if I hold up my ez pass? https://www.cfxway.com/e-zpass/

If you’re flying in and renting a car in FL I’d consider using the visitor toll pass program versus flying with a transponder. You’d have to wrap the transponder in a foil bag, get it out of luggage when you land, go online and register the rental car plate to your transponder, etc.

That being said the rental car transponders usually have a big toggle to turn them off, since a lot of people just prefer to pay cash tolls. That’s the same thing you’d do if you were using visitor toll pass or your own.

Most rental agencies don't use physical transponders, they use toll by plate. As long as an interoperable transponder is in the vehicle and successfully read by the overhead toll equipment, the rental agency will not receive the toll bill.

We drove from NY to WDW last week - the tolls showed up on EZPass - no problem

Curious why you say that. TSA says they can go in a carry-on. It's not hard to add a rental car. I used the visitor toll pass system once and would rather just use my own.

Used NY EZ Pass first week of July on 528, 417 and Osceola in a rental car without issue. I forgot to put in Rental car plate number in EZ Pass account, so none of the tolls were a bill by plate.

The bill by plate would only come into play if there was a failure to read the EZPass transponder. Entering the plate number in your EZPass account is only a fallback. Worst case when you didn’t enter it and a transponder read fails, you get a chargeback from the rental car for the toll(s) plus whatever convenience charge applies for the particular rental car company you used. These can vary to a charge just for any days where tolls were charged to a daily fee for every day of the rental even if you did not incur any charges on some of the days.

I don’t know what the transponder read failure rates might be for EZPass transponders. I’ve been using the Illinois version of EZPass (known as IPass) for many years (more than 20, with a transponder upgrade a couple of times in that interval), and we have a lot of toll roads in the Chicago area. I routinely monitor charges to my account for the two transponders we have in our personal cars. I have never noted a transponder read failure. I’m actually surprised at the apparent reliability over time. I don’t know if the Florida readers are as reliable, but it’s nice to hear a report of no problems where the plate was not registered in your account. I wonder if it would make a difference in the Miami area where toll by plate appears to be the norm, with no cash lanes that I have seen when visiting.

So I don’t have to do anything as far as the ez pass right? Just put it in the windshield?

That should be it. Depending on what state your EZPass is from will determine if you should or need to add the rental plate into your account.

I've had an IPass for almost 20 years now and never had a read failure anywhere I've used it, including IN and OH. The only time the toll by plate came into play was when I forgot to switch the IPass from one vehicle to another.
I will be pretty happy to use my IPass when I'm in FL next in Oct.

Thanks, it’s NY ez pass.
NY EZ-Pass and the other state EZ-Passes all use the same interoperable technology as the Illinois I-Pass (the Illinois toll people have chosen to use their own terminology), usable over most of the eastern portion of the country (east of the Mississippi River) now that Florida has gotten onboard in both the Central Florida Expressway region (basically around greater Orlando) and the Florida Department of Transportation Sunpass region (which is most of the state).
