Just discovered M:A:S:H

Lol. compared to what we have today? if we only knew……
I guess I don't understand. Are you saying there are preachier comedies today than later MASH? I don't watch a lot of network TV anymore, but I can't think of any.

TV in general. Yes. Lots can be found that wants to send a message. who was limiting the comment to network tv?

All military comedies have a message; that war is, at it's heart, ridiculous.

M*A*S*H* the movie is a very different animal than M*A*S*H* the TV series. (MUCH raunchier for one thing.) It's possible that the OP is speaking of the film, though probably the TV program.

(BTW, if you haven't seen the film, the title of the theme song is "Suicide is Painless." The TV show used it only as an instrumental, but in the film it had lyrics.)

My dad's favorite show is MASH and now it's my dog's too. Whenever my dad starts watching it and the intro theme starts to play, she runs over and sits with him. She even knows to run to the couch when someone says "Do you want to watch MASH?"

I've never seen it - just bits and pieces here and there.

I’m like, dog, this must be a typo
but nope
I can actually see a dog develop the habit based on the sounds

I'm referring to the TV series, preferrably with Charles Winchester 3rd in them and ESPECIALLY with Captain Flag (one of the funniest characters even created!)

The movie was too nasty for me.
The movie was a bit too something for me. I was touch too young when it came out. Just outside the target demo. The TV series though. Dead on target demo
I even bought an add on set of cards for our Trivial Pursuit. I was able to answer every question on each card

I think it's habit too. My dad watches reruns that come on TV around 8 pm so when he sits on the couch around 8 and the theme comes on, she comes running over and she sits next to him. I think she remembers the time, my dad on the couch and the theme and knows what to do.

Great show!
I grew up seeing it "live" also.
But IMHO Winchester has nothing on FRANK BURNS!
Oh my gosh, Larry Linville played him so well,
and when he had some episodes where his character
wasn't so funny, it could make me choke up a bit.

And Colonel Flagg was hilarious:

I agree that the show changed from a flat out comedy to more of a dramedy as the years went on, but I always felt like that could have been the experience for the people in real life - going into war using comedy to cope with all the carnage, but losing some of their naïveté over the years when things don’t appear to get any better no matter what they did. My favorite episodes are probably evenly split between earlier and later episodes. I will always have a soft spot for the series finale though.

I enjoyed MASH when it was on originally. The sexism in the early years makes me uncomfortable now, but perhaps that was reflecting reality for women in the services. I did like how Margaret had some in depth development in later seasons.
