I would love to take the kids to the Coral Reef but wondering if we could just go for dessert one night or maybe even an appetizer? Is this allowed or frowned upon? THanks, Jen

It used to be allowed before the dining plan. I don't really see how they could force you to order more than you are interested in ordering. The catch is that you'd probably have to make an ADR to do it. Once upon a time - before the dining plan, when you could walk up to many TS places and geta table, we did this at Kona. Now though, there proably aren't too many people who do this any more at any TS places. the otehr thing that may well not matter to you, but which you might think about, is that you will be taking up a time slot. There are still some places where you can walk up and get a table, at least some of the year, but they are relatively few, now.

Maybe if you went at an off time? Really early or really late? Or is there such a thing as an off time now?

We did that exactly on our last trip. We have a ADR for an early dinner at the Coral Reef but we were hot and not very hunger as we had a late lunch. We order build your own sundaes and enjoyed watching the fish. The place was not crowed and it was the first dinner seating so I didn't feel too bad about taking up someone else spot. The server was very nice and said it was not a problem when we asked if we could do this - she said we could order whatever we wanted.

Wonderful- thanks for your repsonses- I tried to find those Sundaes on the All Ears Coral Reef Menu but didn' t see them- do you know a menu that I can look at that has them- so I can tell the kids about them and see the cost- thanks, Jen

I haven't looked for a menu with them specifically, but I can say the desserts at WDW change, often seasonally, sometimes daily. More so now that they are trying to make WDW more healthy. It's probably not a good idea to get your heart set on any particular menu item - lest being disappointed of it's not there when you arrive. Just a thought.

Sorry about taking someone's spot ???
I thought making an ADR meant it was your spot and you could order what you want. Do you think anyone who was paying for a meal OOP should be forced to eat enough to make it worth while for the server to spend time on them.
I think this whole crazy DDP - ADR thing has warped some thinking. Just my opinion but I guess those comments really struck a nerve.

yup,I feel the same way. If you reserve the "spot" its yours!

Hi
We had an ADR for San Angel Inn in Epcot in December. In the past, we've made ADR's for just dessert or drinks and appetizers, at different restaurants.
Years ago, we just had dessert in the Castle. Anyway, this year in Mexico, my DH and I had an ADR for 2:30. We mainly wanted to relax by the river and drink margaritas. We ordered them and started drinking. Then the server wanted to know what we wanted to eat. We said nothing. He said we had to order food, that it was the "state law". He told me he would show me the document that showed it was a state law. My DH and I just laughed. So I looked at a dessert menu, but didn't really want anything. So he told us we had to go after we finished our drinks. I asked him to bring me a plastic cup and we left. We didn't feel like arguing with him. I don't feel like we took up anyone's table, since there were a lot of empty tables. We probably would've spent more money on the margaritas than on food, so he would've gotten a 20% tip. I did go to Scl-Fi for dessert in August and it wasn't a problem.

We have done this many times...although not at Coral Reef. To be honest, depending on your kids you might not like the dessert choices there. The build your own sundaes were on the kid menu last time I was there. You can always check out the menu's on www.allearsnet.com.

I've been to CR just for dessert, but it was a latest lunch seating I could get. We also got to sit right by the aquarium. The CM brought us special bday treats too since we were celebrating our bdays there. Oh, we also got 10% off with my AP. ;)
