I'm just curious... Has anyone ever been upgraded to a larger unit at check-in? Like maybe you booked a studio and they gave you a 1-br instead? Or is it that the most they will upgrade you, without extra cost to you, is the view? Just curious...

I forgot to mention that the trip I'm "just curious" about is Jan 3-6. I'm sure the time of year has a big impact on their ability to upgrade guests.

Upgrades with DVC are very rare. If they do happen, it would most likely be due to the room you were assigned being removed for a maintenance issue and they didn't have another room in the same category.

Very, very unlikely at any time of year, sorry. DVC resorts operate differently than the non-DVC Disney resorts.

Even if they wanted to upgrade you, the resort is likely to be fully booked during the time you're going.

Even if the resort you booked is not full when you check in you will not be upgraded in view or in room size unless there is a maintenance issue. It would not be fair to other DVC members if some folks pay full points for a room or view and others get the same thing for fewer points.

A few have gotten lucky over the years and usually these are due to either certain unit types being over sold OR to maint issues (rehab or a unit goes out unexpectedly). Unlike cash stays, if you are staying on points and request to be upgraded they will either charge you the extra points OR simply say it's not possible. I do know of a couple of situations where the party asked to be upgraded and were told sure but no one mentioned it'd be for the extra points and they were then unhappy or at least surprised when they later found they'd paid the extra points when the resort contacted MS to do so.

One January we had ressies for 2 standard view studios and one turned out to be a boardwalk view. We didn't request it and didn't know it until my mom opened the door. Sadly, the studios were only for one night so we didn't get to really enjoy it.

Yes, at SSR we reserved a studio and got a one-bedroom. I'm unsure why, but perhaps they had overbooked the available studios (the resort was still under construction). It worked for us!

In 10 years of DVC, I have never received an upgrade.

Thank you all for your responses. We will be staying in BLT for 3 nights. I certainly am not expecting to be upgraded, I was just wondering if it ever happened. We got a studio because we didn't want to "waste" points on such a quick trip. My DS's girlfriend is joining us(DS, DH, and me) so there will be 4 adults in a studio, LOL! I'm sure we will have a great time on our quick getaway no matter what! I'm thankful that we are able to be a part of DVC and enjoy it whenever we get a chance!

Yikes. Prepare to be tight in that space. The BLT studio is pretty small and there isn't much space between the beds. Plus the kitchen and bathroom sink share the same space. I hope you are all very friendly with each other and aren't concerned about privacy. The BLT studio is really meant only for two adults and maybe one other smaller child.

If you were paying cash to DVC, it might happen for a short stay. I know we got a one bedroom on cash before our multi-night stay on points in a one bedroom and we had reserved a studio for the one night on cash.
