So, I was just thinking about all the recent restrictions regarding carryon items...personally, my carryon is gonna be a lot lighter and smaller. I was wondering, for those of you who have flown since the new restrictions, have you noticed more room in the overhead bins? Or are they still as cramped as ever?

Just curious...TIA!

Can't answer your question, but I did fly on some smaller planes in May. I decided to take a very small carry-on instead of the larger bag I usually take. I loved having space in the bin, I loved the fact that my shoulder didn't hurt as I walked across the airport... I will always fly with the smaller bag from now on..... with my laptop bag with me as well... can't go without that one...

I've done six flights in the past 20 days. Lots of room in overhead bins now.

Most flights had extra room and quicker boarding - a flight to LAX which seemed to be filled with DL travellers was just as crammed and took just as long to board

I've had 2 flights with Jet Blue since the new ban and there is so much more room in the overhead.

To and from Knoxville, there was lots of room in the overheads. A major improvement.

Lots of room in the overheads lately, BUT longer waits at baggage claim because more stuff is being checked.

I've been on 6 flights since the new restrictions, and there has been a noticeable change in overhead space. If nothing else, none of the flights have been plagued by "that guy" with the big bag searching up and down the aisle looking trying to find an empty bin to shove his bad into.

I flew US Air last week and there was far more room in the overheads than usual. Unfortunately I chose to check my very small bag rather than carry it on and it was lost for 24 hours, :guilty:

Agreed. I flew in and out of LaGuardia a couple of weeks ago. The nice thing is that these new restrictions have essentially taken the wind out of the sails of the folks who previously REFUSED to check their baggage and carried EVERYTHING on the plane with them. It's obviously pretty hard to do that now and there were definitely fewer people trying to get huge bags down the aisle and cram them into the overhead bins.

What's wrong with taking crayons on a plane? Are you limited to the 12 crayon box or can you lug the 64 crayon box on? Are certain colors allowed and others not?

Flying is so difficult anyore.

According to the TSA website, the following are banned:

Atomic Tangerine
Aquamarine
Brick Red
Copper
Gold
Pacific Blue
Radical Red
Raw Umber
Sea Green
Silver

An article in the travel section of the LA Times was saying most overhead bins are empty now!

Well, thanks everyone! I can now put that curiousity cat to rest. I figured there would be more space, but hadn't considered the extra delay waiting while security checks the bags more.

dudspizza...know exactly what ya mean...a while back I traveled with a friend who's deaf blind and was her guide, so I used my smaller carryon and it was fantastic not having so much. I've gotten used to only using the smaller bag, but all my hair products still fit in it, so I guess next flight will be an even smaller carryon.

Thanks again everyone!

I found this thread interesting becuase my DH and I will carry the same amount of luggage on-board when we travel to MCO next month and it will be heavier. See, we are checking toothpaste and travel shampoo and carrying-on an extra pair of size 13 high top sneakers. My DH had knee surgery and only really walks well in these shoes. Unfortunately, he cannot remove these shoes to go through security while standing in line.

While I told him he could continue to use the "I don't have to remove my shoes due to a medical condition" exception, he is tired of having to fight TSA on the shoe issue.

On our last flight, he was literally abandoned in a chair just past the metal detector when the TSA agent ordered him to "wait there" then walked away. After about 10 minutes, another agent asked what he was waiting for, and when she heard the explanation, told him the first agent had gone to lunch and that he was okay to proceed.

Thank goodness for bags with wheels!

I feel your pain! I have to fight the same battle. TSA is so inconsistant and inconsiderate . . . they need Disney training in customer service.

Imagine if TSA started charging Disney prices for Disney service!

On my last flights, security lines moved really fast, baggage security was about the same, no waiting necessary once you drop it off with them. Boarding was super fast and the luggage showed up quite quickly. I noticed no real delays, rather a speed up in just about everything. Of course you still get those pax who simply have to bring "the kitchen" sink, but, even that has diminished.
