We live in central Missouri and it takes us 18 hours to drive. I love to drive and will not fly, not from fear but because the shabby treatment hte airlines exhibit.
My family and I always drive to Florida. My DH WILL NOT FLY!! We drive, or I should say I drive us, the last two times we drove straight thru. It took us 18 hours! I love to drive and we always have a good time. Its just me 34, DH 35 and DD 14. We are going back June 06, and will drive straight thru again!! I CANT WAIT
My DH hates to fly to. I can get him in a plane every few years, so I pick the flight wisely. We drive and it takes us 16 hours with minimal stops. We both love to drive, so it works for us.
I will never get on a plane that is why we drive. It really isn't all that bad if you can make if fun on the way there. The only thing I don't like about driving is the mountains. On the way there, we hit 2 and on the way back (for some reason) we hit 1. But other than that, it's smooth sailing and all is good.
We drive more than we fly. It takes us 12 hours to drive and we usually break it up into 6 hours over 2 days. Generally we will leave after the kids get out of school and drive until somewhere in SC or GA and then take our time getting to Orlando the next day.
This year though, we are flying!!!! We just got back from an 8-9 hour drive to Cincinnati and the DVD player broke on the way back and I am so glad I don't have to ride in the car w/ the kids again!!! (It actually wasn't so bad, but the thought of having to do it again so soon scares the heck out of me!!!)
Last time we went, we flew Southwest - which was offering $39 each way fares. But this time, fares aren't so cheap (around $200 round trip). There are 5 of us, so by not buying 5 tickets or a rental car, we'll be saving around $1300 by driving. We're a theoretical 10 hour drive from Kissimmee.
We drove from DFW in March 04 and it took 17.5 hours total.
We made it to Lake City FL in 14 hours and overnighted since we were going to get charged for the room anyways. Nice drive except for the pan handle of Florida. That stretch from Pensacola to Talahassee is horrible.!!
I drive frequently from Carver (near Cape Cod). I normally leave about 4pm and will usually pull into the driveway in Deltona (45 minutes from Disney)around noon. I drive straight thru with stops for gas, stretching / bathroom and food. I will stop for a sit down breakfast.
By myself I usually stop around Fredericksburg for a couple hour nap and then continue on. If the family is with me, it's non-stop except for the above mentioned gas/food stops.
Usually 19-23 hours depending on road conditions, traffic, time of year and companionship.
It takes longer if I'm convoying with other family's.
We drive from just south of Indianapolis. We usually start out about 10 am--no matter how hard we try, we can't seem to leave much earlier than that. We get to just south of Atlanta, and stay the night--we have a few little towns that we like to stay in. Then, we drive to Gainesville. We both attended the Univ of Florida, and love to visit Gainesville. As a matter of fact, we have extended our trips to spend more time in Gainesville. My parents lived there until they passed away, so, I have many favorite places and fond memories. One year, we went to the homecoming barbecue and Gator Growl before going to Orlando. If we just stop for lunch, we would get to Orlando by 3pm the second day. Actual driving time is about 20 hrs or so.
