After reading thru the $900. a month grocery post I was wondering........Is there a generic product that your family prefers over brand name?

My daughter prefers generic frosted mini wheats over Kelloggs... any one else have an item :flower:

Maybe Id like to try it :sunny:

We like the generic (Kirkland) paper towels and toilet paper from Costco. Also, the generic (White Cloud) diapers from Walmart, though I don't like the fit of the White Cloud pull-ups. The local Stop and Shop carries a generic (Stop & Shop_ face tissue called Pure Softness that is very soft for $0.99/160 box.

we use our supermarket (hannafords) brand of all canned veggies and have noticed NO difference we do this as well with frozen fruits and veggies

My local grocery store has generic laundry detergent that I love- It looks like Cheer, smells like Cheer and washes like Cheer but it costs half the price!

We are the samed way about the frosted flakes, and the sugar coated puffed wheat too (I can not remember the brand name).

Frozen veggies, fruit, waffels are all good generic.

I don't know if they're exactly generics but I like the majority of the things I buy at Aldi's. It isn't the full service kind of grocer but their dairy is quite good, crackers, pickles, oatmeal--all at prices way cheaper than the full-service stores.

I really like the microwave popcorn from Target vs. Orvilles or popsecret.
I usually buy most items with the Target label if available.

We like the Publix brand Mac 'n Cheese and Albertson's brand natural flavor microwave popcorn. We also like the Walmart brand tater tots and french fries.

we prefer the market basket brand toilet paper over other brands.

We love the White Cloud TP (soft like Charmin but without the lint) and who doesn't love President's Choice chocolate chip cookies!

Our family loves Aldi's..... :teeth:

I will only buy Aldi's canned tuna after several bad experiences with name brand ones.

And reputable source is that the items they carry are actually from name brand vendors. (they are canned or packaged at the same plants just with different labels.)

Aldi's canned ravioli IS the same as chef boyardee, just half the cost.

There are numerous products that we buy store brands. Do I prefer them? That's hard to say, but there are definitely quite a few where I simply have no preference one way or the other. They do taste a little different from each other but so do different brand names. That being the case, I think its ridiculous to pay the extra money for the brand name.

I will say that I've gotten so used to eating the store brands that on the occasion when there's a good sale and we buy the brand name because it is cheaper, it takes some getting used to because it just isn't the flavor we are accustomed to. I'm of the opinion that most of our food likes and dislikes and preferences are all learned behavior. You can get used to and be just as happy with the store brands as with the brand names if you give them a chance.

I almost always buy generic brands for things that get mixed into recipes.
Like: chicken broth, soups, canned vegetables, can beans, canned tomatoes, noodles, shredded cheese.

I also usually buy the store brand of ketchup and mustard if it's cheaper.

I agree with the poster above that the frozen waffles and pancakes are good.

We also tend to buy the store brand bread and buns.

I buy whatever is cheaper in paper goods (except toilet paper).

I usually buy generic pasta and rice, soup, and anything that's getting mixed into a recipe like another person said. I'll try generic diapers, but so far I haven't found any that work with my son. I won't buy store brand formula or baby food because after reading labels I've found that they aren't as nutritious so we're a Gerber family. I buy generic bread products, too.

Agree.

yummy.

Most store brands are packaged/canned at name brand plants and are labeled for the particular store. They're not all exactly the same, but it's cheaper than each store running it's own facilities so they pay the name brand manufacturers to do it for them. It's a matter of figuring out which generic or store brand is the name brand you prefer. I know by taste that the store brand of catsup and peanut butter is not the name brand ones we usually buy. You just have to try the store brands til you find what you like. It does save money.

This what I always tell people when they say, "Oh, we would never buy store brand food. We'll only buy brand names." Well who do you think makes the store brands?

I agree that the store brands aren't al the same, just as the brand name products are not all the same. For example, I like Shop Rite Cheerios more than Genuardi's Cheerios.

This is true about the name-brand at least packaging the store-brand. A few years ago we took a group of kids to one of the name-brand soft drink factories and they were "bottling" the Sam's Choice(Wal-Mart's brand) drinks right there along with the name brands! I dont' think Sam's Choice tastes the same(probably use a different formula), but they were "bottling" them there.

We love the Wal-mart pop-tarts (DH takes for work snacks) and the cereal in bags for the boys. Sometime the bag cereal has less fiber, but since the boys only get sweet cereal once a week (or so) or for snacks it is fine for us.

We tend to buy some things name brand because we haven't found a non-name brand that we like, but I'm not picky either way. We buy the Sams Choice water all of the time. I'm a bargain buyer so if it's on sale, I'm willing to try it. I absolutely love Aldi's pickles. I can't explain it, but the name brand pickles do nothing for me. My dd wore the walmart diapers for about two years with no problems. We even used their pull-ups for potty training. I can't really think of any one thing off the top of my head that we really prefer generic, but we consume generic things all of the time and it makes more sense to me than paying a fortune when you get the same quality either way:)

Publix brand green beans! Everyone thinks they are fresh. :rolleyes1 Though they have increased in price lately, maybe I've made them too popular. :rotfl: Also publix brand rice and corn chex, much better than name brand.
