Just confirmed snow day #4!!

Just got the all call and we are out of school for the 4th straight day. I am frustrated that my kids don't seem to understand or care that these are days they are going to have to made up. We asked them..."do you want to go to school later in June when you would have been out already?" They said we don't care. Then the devil in me said, "oh well, I was going to take you Disney then but now we can't go. Hope you enjoy your snow days". I am so mean but having just gotten back to school from Christmas break, this is getting really ridiculous.

How much snow did you get? Wasn't it around 8" - 10". We get that all the time, now granted, we have the snow equipment to move it around, but really, it's called drive slower, take your time and there is no reason to close and if you did, maybe for one day.

Do they have to make them ALL up?

I recall in Florida--especially in 2004 when our county was hit twice with hurricanes....

That the state waived some days, but not all of them.

The following year, the calendar included "hurricane make up days"---that would be days off, unless they had hurricane days. Then those slots were the make up days.

Does your school not have anything similar?

I made mention of this very thing to my teenagers who have done nothing but lay around making dishes for 3 days. Tonight the washer is running, the bookbags are on the sofa, shoes and sport bags being put together JUST IN CASE they go to school. Here, they do saturday schools sometimes...guess that should really make things joyful!

Here in Asheville/Buncombe County we are also on our 4th snow day. Our kids have not had a full week of school since before Thanksgiving!! I am not hopeful that they will go on Friday and they are off on Monday for MLK Jr. Day on Monday.

At this rate they will be in school until July!!!


Here's hoping that our kids get to school one day soon.

8 to 10 inches HA! More like 2 to 3 then a layer of ice over that. All of our main roads and secondary roads are clear but there are some residential roads are still covered in ice. They will not let buses go out until everything is clear. We do have to make everything up. The make up days are built in. So far we have added we have lost president's day, easter monday, 2 days on to the end of the year and now we start eating into spring break. To top it off, next week, we are out Mon for MLK and Fri for end of quarter (teacher workday). UGH!!

I know our schools in MI and Ohio had/have 3-5 snow days built in but after that it's make up time. In most cases they start by cutting teacher inservice days or shaving day off spring break etc. so if you would normally get off fri before spring break now u would go to school that day and start break on mon.

In Maryland, because the governor declared a state of emergency,the schools were basically able to write off 5 of the days that the students missed -- maybe there's hope.

Wow I do not think my kids have ever had to make up days. We have 5 snow days built into the calander year. I live right in the center of New York State. Madison County and we get alot of Lake effect snow. Today we got about a foot of snow so far.

We've had five so far this year. Have to make up each one. I don't mind, though. I'd rather get up and out early when it is 70 degrees out vs 3 degrees out.

Our county website now has up that there is a regular school day tomorrow and the 3 days will be made up on the next 3 teacher workdays...1/21, 1/24 and April 22..lose a day of spring break in reality.

They have exams next week so they were looking to enjoy those couple days in the middle from the stress of it all...

Many schools no longer have the freedom to not force make-up days. School calendars have already been cut due to finances so there are no longer any of those built in days.

MY DD goes to Union Co schools (southeast suburb of Charlotte)- we are on to our 4th snow day tomorrow. So far, Monday, Tuesday, and today's snow days are covered- we have 3 teacher workdays that will be regular school days now: Feb 21, Mar 11, and May 2.

Now that we are into non-covered snow days, I don't know what they are going to do to make them up. We do have a workday on Mon, 1/24- I'm guessing they will have the kids come in then. Other options are Saturday school, extended days, or cutting into Spring Break.

#4 tomorrow here too, Union County, NC (southeast of Charlotte). It is crazy. But I understand the reasons. Not enough salt trucks to get to all those neighborhood roads. Ours was never done, but we don't have any trees/buildings shading it so it was able to melt. It'll be unreal if it goes through Friday too.

3 of our days were already planned in the calendar, this 4th one, I have no clue when we'll make it up.

Oh and I lived in Michigan for 19 years then Maryland for 12. It's strange having all this school closing for such minor winter weather!

Can you guys actually go to school after June 10th or did your school originally end before that? We are in NC and I thought it was a state law that school cannot start before August 25th or end after June 10th.

Not so much with the kind of snow/ice we get. This time it was mostly ice and it did not get above freezing yesterday and there was no sun, so hardly anything melted or evaporated. Today was sunny, but still in the 30's. More melted and evaporated, but there will still be lots of black ice tomorrow morning.

In KY, to qualify for a waiver, you need to have 20 or more snow days. Which my school district had last winter. I don't remember how many days they had off in total, I stopped counting after 21 days. The school ended up having 10 days waived(I think) and they had to make up the rest(Saturday school, scheduled make up days, days tacked onto end of school year, etc)

What part of the state are you in? Here in Morgan Co, tomorrow will be the 12th snow day since the first storm hit in early December. Last winter they were off for 20+ days.

Okay, I'm laughing because you have had 4 days off and my kids had today off and they're back tomorrow and we got @ 20" of snow and it's still snowing. That's on top of 4-5" over the weekend and 16" on the 26th of Dec.

We do have 5 built in make up days at the end of school year that they back out if we don't use them all. This is actually the first year in years that they've used even 1 of those days. The last time we used one wasn't even for snow but for cold; the temp in the AM was -10 with a 20 degree wind chill (so basically -30) so they didn't want the kids waiting for the busses.

I agree. I guess the OP must have not grown up in the show belt to understand what fun & excitement it is to have a snow day. June will take care of June when it gets here. Plus, ALL the days in June are nice weather. Being young and able to get a "cheater's day" to play in the snow, that's part of the fun of snow days for kids.

The OP needing to be a spoil sport and ruin her kids excitement, that's about her. One day when they are adults and are out of the house for good, she'll wish she had an excuse for them to come home.
