Just confirmed snow day #4!!

How much snow did you get? Wasn't it around 8" - 10". We get that all the time, now granted, we have the snow equipment to move it around, but really, it's called drive slower, take your time and there is no reason to close and if you did, maybe for one day.

This storm brought a lot of ice. That's what the issue is. They aren't willing to risk the buses in the ice. My kids are out again tomorrow too. They don't care but I don't blame them. I remember loving snow days as a kid too.

I don't know what our district is going to do yet. We were supposed to end on memorial day weekend and never go into june. So I guess we are going to miss a vacation week or something. :confused3

We had 38 inches over Christmas break, much of it still on the ground when Monday the 3rd came around, we were off the 3rd then back to school the next day. And the only reason we were off was b/c the roof caved in at the high school so the whole district closed lol. Otherwise we woulda been there.

We were off today with about 12 inches (6 left over from our Christmas storm and 6inches of the new stuff). Its icy here, but I think we'll have school tomorrow, if not then a delay.

If DD has to make up time in June...thats ok with me, maybe I could get an hour to myself to lay on the beach one morning while she's making it up hee hee hee!

Come on Spring...:cool2:

Wow! Our district has 3 built-in snow days and we had off today but when I ran into the Superintendent earlier tonight and he said that if he would have waited till this morning he would have not called one since we only got 7 inches and the roads were fine by 9 am, so he would have called delayed opening.

But we have the equipment up here to clear the roads while down South the towns really don't. Its better that the kids are safe especially if you still icy roads.

Here in Louisiana we have inclement weather days built into the calendar as well. They can be taken for snow (a dusting is all we need to cancel school ;)) or tornados or hurricanes or flooding or any combination of the above.

There's something magical about school being cancelled unexpectedly because water is over the levee and the main bridge into town is flooded. (The particular bridge and levee this happened to meant that a hunting camp or two got flooded and made work days for the hunting clubs, but it meant days off for everyone else!)

I agree. I guess the OP must have not grown up in the show belt to understand what fun & excitement it is to have a snow day. June will take care of June when it gets here. Plus, ALL the days in June are nice weather. Being young and able to get a "cheater's day" to play in the snow, that's part of the fun of snow days for kids.

The OP needing to be a spoil sport and ruin her kids excitement, that's about her. :sad2: One day, when they are out of the house, she'll wish she had an excuse for them to be home. :p

:confused3

In the end, if they have to make up the days--they'll still be out of the house during the school year.

4 days in the row is a lot when it wasn't planned.

Just got the all call and we are out of school for the 4th straight day. I am frustrated that my kids don't seem to understand or care that these are days they are going to have to made up. We asked them..."do you want to go to school later in June when you would have been out already?" They said we don't care. Then the devil in me said, "oh well, I was going to take you Disney then but now we can't go. Hope you enjoy your snow days". :rotfl2: I am so mean but having just gotten back to school from Christmas break, this is getting really ridiculous.

Why guilt your kids? It's not their fault school is closed. Even if they wanted to go back, they couldn't.

I am also concerned how the school district is going to handle these snow make up days. We are currently at day #4 also. We only have one snow day built into the calendar. So at the end of the year, they'll have 3 to make up. We had vacation plans to leave on the last day of school, so I don't know how we'll work that out now. Hopefully, they'll waive the last couple days of school, if not, it would make the kids having to attend school until June 13th.

Our plans included leaving the last day of school, which I can work around that, BUT our cruise leaves on June 12th, so I would have to keep her out on June 13th anyway.

Tomorrow will be the 4th day this week for our kids to be out. We got a call today stating that the students will go back next Tuesday with the teachers returning on Friday for a professional development day.

We got about 8 - 10 inches of snow which is unheard of in my part of the country. I'm 51 and only recall this much snow one other time in my life. I live about a hour from Memphis, and I heard on the news that Memphis doesn't even own any snow plows. We definitely don't have any way out here in the country.

They have used road graders as much as they can here, but we have a lot of roads that are still covered. What little melts then freezes into ice. We just aren't equipped to deal with this. Sometimes I hear parents complain about school being closed, but if they did send the buses out and something happened, we all know where that would go.

I don't blame the kids for being excited about the snow days. I was when I was a kid. Later on it may change though. In our case, I expect this will take our Spring Break (we already missed one day before we got out for Christmas).

Atlanta area schools are closed for the 4th day in a row tomorrow. The main roads are clearing but the secondary roads still have a lot of ice. The State of Georgia has said it will work with schools regarding the missed days. Waivers can/will be granted.

I'm in Salisbury, NC and we're out again tomorrow, also. Rowan County has been announcing makeup days as they've cancelled. Jan 21 (teacher workday ) for Monday, Saturday, Jan 22 for tuesday , and Feb 21 (I think ) for Wednesday. They said TBD for Thursday.

As it stands now, my kids with MAYBE attend school on Friday and then have a 3 day weekend.....Monday is off for MLK Day and they didn't use it as a makeup.

North Carolina doesn't have much choice, as far as making up. School must have 180 instructional days, can't start before Aug 25 , and must be out for summer by June 10. Not much wiggle room.

Fourth day in a row in the Nashville area too! I, however, will have to priveledge of going to work.

To those who live in areas where snow is common, you have to keep several things in mind. First, in most Southern cities and towns, it's not practical to spend money on snow plows and such because of the rarity of this much snow and ice. Also, we tend to have lots of students who live in very rural areas. I'm a teacher, and in my district, many of our students live off of secondary roads, if that. Even though some of our roads get sanded and plowed, most don't. And, of course, no one wants to take chances with the lives of children. We are not accustomed to driving on ice, and while some of us do just fine, others- not so much. I'm frustrated at the prospect of losing part of summer to make up these days, but I try to be understanding that missing another day will probably be the best thing for our students.

Where I go, The only times we have to make up days are if they get over 3 full snow days, not sure how it works as we rarely get snow days (I am from New York) but I believe they have it tack onto the finals weeks where we go to school another day during the finals weeks and just go take the final then go back to class. (never had that happen before so I am unsure.) I am a senior in High School. If Our schools close it's because it gets 20 below 0 or we have a few feet (like 3) over night (a few inches is common but not 3 feet in one night, that is even to much for where I live and we constantly buy new snow plows)

We had our first snow day here in NJ today, and last year my child went to school until June 25th, it was crazy!

This! :thumbsup2

We're on our 4th snow day this week. Good thing I'm married to a guy from Connecticut who can drive on snow and ice, because I've never had to do it. Thankfully, our superintendents are taking faculty and student safety into consideration and erring on the side of caution.

Not in Rowan, but not too far from you. What I hate is that they *never* build in enough snow days and *always* take away from Spring Break. I learned years ago to never plan a family vacation over Spring Break for this very reason, and of course we don't have a Fall Break anymore since we start Aug. 25. I hate that the school calendar basically forces us to take vacations in the blistering hot, expensive summer months or the even more expensive Thanksgiving or Christmas break. I'm hoping when they graduate from high school we can possibly have a little more wiggle room with family vacations and college schedules.

Could you please go to the Salisbury Post website and explain that to the idiots there? I'm so tired of reading about "we should just add days in June".

Yes, I'm a teacher here. I'm just worried about the superintendant cutting into my days of seeing the US Figure Skating Championships. I bought my tickets 2 years ago. When we go next Saturday, it's just practices, so I don't care. But the 29th is Seniors skating.

All you NC people: Be sure to let your local legislators know that you do not support the current calendar restrictions. A majority of those legislators who pushed the restrictions through are no longer in the NC Legislature. With visible support, the legislature may reconsider the calendaring bill to return the control over setting the calendar back to the local people.

Hope this isn't too political for the DIS!

:thumbsup2 Agreed.
These are videos of a guy ice skating down Atlanta's busiest road, Peachtree street. Now Atlanta's single snow plow probably has Peachtree street cleared by now but imagine what kinda shape the secondary roads are in!!

I think everyone realizes this. People are just comparing where they are/the amount of snow/days off.
