Just changed from OKW to SSR

Yep.....Let the BASHING begin!!! I was just stating a simple fact and we have to have someone go off about SSR. If you don't like "our home" DON'T STAY THERE!!!!!
JerJan - I wasn't replying to your simple fact. Sorry I didn't quote when I answered Ms. WDW. Please don't be offended. I really think SSR is beautiful just like the other resorts. It may not be the favorite of the majority, but I don't think I've ever read about someone staying there and not enjoying their stay or saying they would never come back under any circumstances. Ms. WDW - don't you worry about a thing.

I don't want to open up a bag or worms here, but can someone just explain to me why SSR has been "bashed" so badly?

We recently purchased there and will be there for the first time Saturday. I'm just curious.....is the place rodent infested or does the place stink????? :rotfl:

Why so many negitive comments????

And PLEASE!!!!! I'm only asking a question to try and understand "why".

Thanks....

Aren't rodents part of the Disney magic? When we stayed at POR French Quarter in June there was a nice size rat outside the room. I thought it was all part of the atmosphere. :rotfl:

I actually thought about changing my August trip. For my Boyfriend and I the SSR studio would be much nicer, but since this trip is with my best friend and her kids and their friends I think the two beds in the second bedroom at OKW is the way to go here.

Decisions... decisions.

I have stayed every place but VWL. Liked every place, but HH... so....

The pool itself is what I'd call lackluster and it may be considered kind of small. They are just now opening a restaurant. What bewilders me is whatever possessed Disney to build this resort? It lacks all the winning features of the other resorts. The theming is kind of goofy. Are there that many horse race enthusiasts around? After building OKW, BCV, BWV, VWL and knowing what people like, why did they completely leave those elements out of their biggest venture? I don't know what they were thinking.

Rigsby25 I know you did not mean to bash but I think its the way you word your thoughts on SSR.

Lackluster Goofy lacks winning features of the other resorts
just sounds mean rather than objective. have a nice day

Thank you ALL for your comments and thoughts about SSR.

As one of the posters said, DH and I will have to form our own opinions. It really is a personal choice. One of the things I'm looking forward to is DTD. In all the years we've been going to WDW, I've been to DTD once; last year. And this trip is just DH and myself. Our son didn't want to come this year. I guess when you hit 17 your priorities change. :confused3 I know mine don't! ;)

But I am sooo looking forward to just being in WDW and SSR for the first time. Saturday will not get here quick enough.

Again, thanks!! :thumbsup2

We will also be at SSR from 7/29 to 8/5. We will be staying in a studio. We stayed at SSR once before in a 1 bedroom and loved it. We think that SSR once completely finished will be one of the premier Disney resorts. We have stayed at many different Disney resorts and we found that we like the small town feel of this resort. It is a great home resort. Have a great trip.

Jealousy :rotfl:

The newest resort is always bashed...although BCV has had its share lately.

I would think it's more along the lines of jealousy. SSR is new. It's a big resort. We stayed there when there were only 2 sections open and we loved it. Next time we stay the whole place will be done, so we'll be forming new opinions. I'm pretty confident that they will be positive.

Yes and I want to apologize for getting off track to the op I get a little defensive when it comes to SSR.

Sorry. I thought I was answering Ms. WDW's question honestly. I didn't mean to bash nice or not. I will gladly stay at SSR if there is nothing else available. There is absolutely nothing wrong with SSR; after all it is DVC. Just to me there is no reason to stay there if something else is available. Do me a favor. Fill in the blank: I love OKW because of the island atmosphere and because of the large rooms, and because you park close to your room. I love VWL because of the lodge theming, Whispering Canyon restaurant, and the huge welcoming relaxing lobby. I love BCV and BWV because of the fantastic restaurants and the location. What I love about SSR is _______________. Lets turn the bashing around! What are some great reasons to prefer SSR?

Ok, since you're asking so nicely. What I love about SSR is:
!. Horse drawn carriage rides
2. Ability to walk to DTD
3. The beautiful, elegant rooms
4. Artist's Palete
5. Zero entry pool
6. Elevators in EVERY BUILDING
7 The Spa
8. Spectacular views
9. Great recreation CM's
10. Because my DH likes it better than BWV

Hope this helps.

I just bought at SSR but I tend to book at OKW because when I have a friend coming along they get a real bed, not a foldout sofa.

Nothing wrong with SSR, though. I like it very much.

Starbox,

A real rat ?

Yup. A big one too, right by the stairs.

And then there was the three foot long snake that slithered across the path in front of me at Typhoon Lagoon and into the bushes...........

Disney wildlife is really authentic! :) I'm hoping for gators at OKW! :rotfl:

(BTW: I grew up in Florida with snakes as pets, and I teach in the inner city and share my classroom with a large rat we nick-named Bartholemew, so it the "wildlife" does not bother me)

ok...one more question here. I'm a little embarassed to ask this but what is "a zero entry pool"??? :confused3

It's a pool with a shallow end that basically starts at "zero depth" and then very gradually increases - GREAT for toddlers and kids scared to jump right into a 3 foot shallow end. Also great for pregnant mommies who want to just SIT in the water. They are also excellent and are used in therapy for kids with sensory integration issues (like autism).

It is not rodent infested and neither does it stink.
In my opinion, Saratoga Springs did not meet my expectations. Yes, the rooms and furnishings are nice because they are new. But it is the whole design of that place that bothered me. It just did not have that magical feeling. Just picture this in your mind if you will. Saratoga Springs to me is like a Six Flags park amongst the WDW parks. The design?: If I have a hotdog sandwich with mustard, ketchup, and relish....Saratoga Springs is like a peunut butter mixed in that sandwich. My tastebuds may be sensitive to the taste of that peunit butter but some may like peanut butter with their hotdog sanwich. To each their own.

Actually, I think one reason that SSR is bashed has nothing to do with the resort itself...it has to do with the fact that it is huge (which is true) and this will cause a huge influx of new DVC'ers. And many of these new members are being told by their guides "Sure, buy at SSR, but you don't have to stay there--stay at Beach Club, Boardwalk, wherever you want..." and are thus clogging up the works for "older" members.

And to a degree, this is true. The math is what it is. There are only a certain number of total rooms at all DVC resorts combined. And a huge percentage of these rooms are at SSR. So if all of the SSR members are staying everywhere else, then others think that they are "getting stuck" with SSR.

Having stayed at SSR, my family and I absolutely loved it. It is beautiful. Nicely appointed. QUIET (and it was at near capacity when we were there) and I thought the pool was AWESOME. Again, we were at near-capacity and the pool was always less than crowded. Lots of chairs, etc. It is my kids' favorite resort (DVC or otherwise...the loved SSR more than AKL...kids are young, too 4, 5, and 7, and they still prefer SSR over anywhere else, though we haven't stayed everywhere yet).

Can impovements be made? Sure. They just did one by expanding the Turf Club. And when we were there, the CMs told us that they would be be building an additional feature/themed pool (rumor? possibly, but we heard it from many folks).

If it is important to you to be near the check-in, pool, restaurants, etc. then yes, you may have a problem. It is spread out and you may have a hike to the central locations. We requested to be near to these areas and our request was honored (remember, though, that these are only requests and cannot be guaranteed), so life was fabulous for us.

Not one complaint from me...and to be honest, I was expecting to find some. I have been on the boards enough and heard enough negative comments about SSR that I was really looking for things to complain about...lol...and couldn't find a one!

Bottom line--DVC does a quality job. And each resort is different and you will find which one is best for you and your family...but regardless, they are each wonderful in their own way.

Enjoy SSR--we sure do. :)

Nicely said, and I agree. One reason I love SSR so much is that its the only resort Ive stayed at, and I dont have anything to compare to, although we have toured all the resorts and found them all wonderfull,we can book 11 months out and dont have to worry about the 7 month window ETC, so Im glad my DW and I love this resort, I always have a place.I bet we walked to DTD 15 times our last trip because my DW loves to shop (my house is full) so SSR is perfect for us, but we did our research and this is what we wanted some people did not research and found themselfs in a home they did not like. I have decided to ignore all neg reports from now on and just enjoy my home and WDW and the very nice people on the DIS.

You did the right thing. SSR is not a bad resort. We like the convience to transportation the surrounding ect. I know you made the right choice. As for OKW you can rent a bike at SSR and there is a path that leads to OKW from SSR just ask at the rental counter. Then you can spend to time at OKW too.
