I do not understand the logic of telling someone to MYOB when they have good reason to believe someone is defrauding social assistance programs. Especially in such a harsh economic climate it almost assures some truly in need won't get help. Not to mention this fraud absolutely hurts people working to pay the tax bill to provide the assistance for the freeloaders.

Defrauding social assistance is honestly more acceptable than allowing a 12 year old to get a Facebook page? Not marrying, yet living together raising your family, applying fraudulently for assistance sends a better message to your kids than allowing Tommy or Suzie to get a Facebook?

Maybe it's time for me to move into a yurt & live off the grid, because there's no way I can swallow how ridiculous that is.

OP, since your neighbor trusts enough to share such personal information, maybe you should respect her and gently tell her why you think she is making poor choices. Perhaps it's just nothing she considered and she might change her ways. Gossiping behind her back on a travel-related board gives her no redress and could be seen as a bit unseemly, don't you think?

I HAVE told her I think it is wrong. I told her she had really learned to work the system, and her response was "well there is no other way for anyone to get by anymore"

I really am not concerned if you think I am "unseemly" I simply wanted to vent my frustration over this issue as so many do here on every subject under the sun, and am realizing I need to do more than that to change things.

It is very frustrating to me sometimes to see these scam artists getting away with stuff like this. I know someone who is as crooked as they come. Been unemployed for 3 years, and yet, the DW and DD of this crook are vacationing in Europe this summer. I know a lot of hardworking, straight as an arrow people who can't even dream of seeing Europe. It annoys me. But I, like the poster above, can sleep with a clear head. And karma will eventually come around and bite them in the butt.

No one is accusing any individual single parent of being a problem. It is merely statistical analysis. Single parents as an all inclusive group are what people mentioning the statistics are talking about. There is a very big difference between the statistics on a population and the application of the statistical probability to an individual in that population. This is something that is often over looked and is important to remember when anyone is accusing anyone who is citing statistics or making accusations, that isn't the case.

Ultimately, if you are a single parent or the child of one you do not have to allow yourself to align with the statistics. Just because you have a higher chance of an outcome doesn't mean that outcome is inevitable. Being part of any group doesn't make you pre-destined to fall into alignment with the statistics of that group, regardless of what people who claim it does say. In fact using statistics as an excuse is something I think far too many people do.

Now, back to the original question, I despise people who game any assistance system or take advantage of any government program. The government isn't providing these benefits, we the tax payer are. I see a very big difference personally between someone who has to resort to any form of assistance as a helping hand in troubled times and someone who uses it as a way of life out of either laziness or ignorance.

I also don't like when people who are married in all but legality stay legally single only for the manipulation of benefits (like health insurance or welfare). I consider that gaming the system and it is you and I who are paying it, not the government.

All of the above is just my opinion on the mater.

I think I might not say too much either as I know that while I was a single mom it was NOT by choice!!!!!!!!! My ex left me and he was the biggest dead beat dad ever!!! not every single mom needs to be put in the same category!

What's the difference between "them" ( welfare frauds) and the Banks? Neither DESERVE the $$$ and WE all PAY through the nose. Trying to report them is a good option, but that won't change anything. I know several people doing the exact thing, and living it up big time. They don't care what others think about them because they KNOW when their next check is coming and when they will have $$$ for the food. This one lady I know buys, steak, lobster tail, shrimp and all the "good stuff" with her card and she has no problem telling you how she" games" the system. She even SELLS her foodstamp to get more cash.

You would be shocked as to how common this is. Im a teacher and we see this kinda of thing alot. Currently we have a mom who is trying everything under the sun to get her child classified as disabled to keep collecting ssi. Our school nurse is finally about had it and getting very concerned for the safety and welfare of the child and has reported her. We have a mom who has 6 kids(by different men, all of them) She gives the kids to her mom but claims the kids on her SSI and welfare. Its really a sad situation. But in our town its kinda a norm. Not everyone here is like this of course. I have actually had a parent tell me the more kids they have the more money they get and they do not plan on stopping. I have parents tells us they are entitled to it and its their right. These are generally the same parents who will not come to a parent conference and we have to make a home visit. I think some states do not see this as much as others. These are not people who have lost jobs either. They have not had jobs in years or ever. Our town has jobs not easy ones mind you, but good paying jobs. You will work a 50 to 60 hour week but that is over time at double pay with hourly jobs starting at 15-20$ an hour. Our walmart can't even keep people employed because they fail the drug test.

Sounds like we live in the same town. This is the story here too. It seems these people have all these kids just for the check. My mother who is also a teacher has been told the same things you have. WOW!
My husband has a hard time getting people to work for him too. The pay is $30-$35.00 an hour, 401K, profit sharing, excellent health insurance (100%) at no cost to the employee, paid vacations, etc. Can't pass the drug test!

I understand when people get down on their luck. But, the "system" is not meant to support people the rest of their lives.

The sad part about all of this is if I fell into a hard spot and needed help I couldn't get it. VENT VENT
