Ok, After spend an hour in the Lowe's tree tent, I managed to find the perfect tree:santa:

They cut the trunk as usual, and we were home with it in less and 30 min. Once home, I stuck it in the stand, and had water on it. Its not residing on the back porch..

Well I went out this morning to check on it...and NO WATER has been taken in..AT ALL!! Is this something I need to be concerned with?

If it doesn't take water in the first 24 hours, it never will and it will be dry as kindling in a few weeks.

We always wait until just before putting it in water to cut the bottom. You may have to re-cut.

Is it cold on the back porch? I think trees drink more in a warm house than in the cold.

We don't cut the bottom off the tree until right before we set it up. I agree that if you bring it into the house, cut off another inch or two then put it into water right away. It might be too cold outside for it to "wake up".

Well we are going through a cold snap here in FL...was in the 40's last night, but supposed to head to 70 during the day today..before getting another cold snap on Sunday, but I plan to have it in the house on Saturday..

So should I cut it again before putting it in the house?

I'd cut a little off the bottom...like 1/2 inch...now and then cut another 1/2 inch when you bring it into the house.

UGh, guess I need to buy a saw...I dont own one...nothing is ever easy!

Grrr no you are right it isn't. If I lived closer I would let you borrow ours. What happened to your electric saw??

borrow a saw from a nieghbor

Get back over to Lowe's for a small saw and cut an inch or so off and mount it immediately. There's a whole bunch of small tool things set out for Christmas in the front.

When we had live trees we always added something sweet like sugar water or 7-Up to the tree stand. After the first day we just used water. I would trim it again too.

We did that once after being urged to by friends. Added some coke to the tree water. Within a few days the tree stand water smelled like puke (literally...like vomit), and some very nasty things were growing there. It was horrible.

Mine took up water for the first 24 hours no problem, but no it seems to have stopped. It hasn't taken any in in the past day. Is that a big problem?

Thanks for the replies..

I got home from work today and checked the tree...it drank some water...not tons and tons, but enough that I am not worried about it. While it didnt warm up 70 degrees here today, the sun was out for a bit, and it was in the 60's..so it was enough..I will move it inside prob tomorrow...

On a plus note...that cats are DEATHLY afraid of it..LOL

Yay! Glad the tree is drinking. And too funny the cats are scared of it. Thank goodness though haha. I hate to think what would happen if we got a real tree. I am sure the wienerdogs would pee on it :lmao:

Yeah, the pug herd will have to be watched...we had to wash the tree skirt at least 3x last time

We always gave ours a fresh cut and put it straight in the water mixture to keep the sap from "glazing" over. We mixed a bottle of glycerin (available at drugstores) in with a gallon of water. That seemed to keep the tree fresh for a very long time. Our tree went up the end of November and came down January 6th. It was rarely kindling at that point and still fragrant and green.
