I am so excited!!!!!! Just booked a week in New York!!!

We are flying out on the 27th March staying at the Woldorf Astoria and flying Premuim economy with Virgin. I am so looking forward to it. It is our First trip, however we are taking our one year old daughter with us so we won't be able to sample the night life much.

Any recommendations on what to do, see, eat, buy etc would be appreciated.

Can't wait to go out and buy my guide book tomorrow........

Haven't been so can't recommend anything - just wanted to say you lucky lucky thing :teeth:

Have a wonderful time:wave:

Way to go Eda!

Are you all going?

(I think Astrid posted a Trip Report for her recent NY trip)

Check out this link for good information on NY things to do, places to eat.

If you are a member of Zagat, you can check out their website, but you have to pay. www.zagat.com.

Eat:
Try Mesa Grill or Craft.

Sight See:
Rockefeller Center
Central Park
The Village (just to walk around)
Soho (shop some botiques)
Times Square of course
See a show: See "Wicked" if you can, it is the best show you will ever see. Make sure you watch "The Wizard of Oz" before you leave on your trip.
Shop on Fifth ave, pretty much from 50th Street to the park.
Museum of Natural History
Metrolpolitan Museum of Art
Use the subway to get around, but buy a "MetroCard"
Go to the top of the Empire State Building

Get a map before you go and get acclimated with the way the streets are setup in NY. Its very easy to get around. (Understand whats meant by uptown, midtown, downtown, upper east side, upper west side, etc..)

Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. I think its free. Good views of the skyline and Statue of Liberty.

Subway is a great way to get around the city, but also don't forget Taxi's, they are quite cheap in NY.

In addition to the above, think about going to:

FAO Schwarz, its a fabulous toy shop at the top of 5th Ave.

Grand Central Station - any good guide book should explain what is to be found there but it truly takes your breath away.

Ellis Island - the ferry for Ellis Island also takes you to Statue of Liberty. Note that Liberty itself is no longer open to the public although you can get onto the island and walk around.

If you have an interest in Ground Zero, try and go to St Paul's Chapel (Broadway & Fulton St) where there's a moving exhibition.

Enjoy !

Janet

Oh..... and try and get onto the other side of Brooklyn Bridge away from Manhattan and walk back across..... you get a good view of Manhattan's skyline.

Awwww Eda I'm happy for you that you're going on this trip - it'll be fun :)

Hiya

I stayed at the Waldorf Jan 2003 (for my 30th Birthday). Whilst I enjoyed it very much I have to say that the hotel seems to be trading on it's reputation rather than on what it delivers. That's not to say that I could fault anything but I expected better (and can anyone really justify a mini-bar price of 5 dollars for a can of coke!!)

New York itself is fantastic (I was there before 11th Spet and went to the top of the WTC) and there is LOADS to do. Have you heard about TKTS for broadway day-of-show cheap tickets? If you enjoy the theatre this is a great way to see a broadway show.

The empire state building is a must-do as is, in my opinion, the UN (I saw Hans Blix when I was there!!). Grand central station is great and if you're staying at the waldorf you'll go there to get the shuttle to Times Square (which is the best part of NY).

Have a great holiday
Brendan

Hmmmmm. Methinks you guys are enjoying the great exchange rate. No? ;)

You'll love it.
Way to go.

I and my late wife went with our 3 kids 1,6,14, in 2000, July 4th !!

We too stayed at the Waldorf - don't use room service unless you have an AmEx.

I was going to tell you all about the plces we went, but mostly covered here already. I think I have a post in www.cruisereviews.com under QE2, or perhaps it was CruiseCritic, can't remember - it had loads on NY.

Eat at the local eateries, the NewYorkers use, in the side streets.
A breakfast off roomservice was over $70, at the local delli it was $6, and all the coffee you can drink, plus the atmosphere. Huge portions. Don't bother with McD or similar - [though a alk through the McD on WallSt is an experience - piano player, table mats, flowers, doorman etc, all at regualr prices.] - eat as a New Yorker - its cheaper, and much more fun.

Take Nappy Bags, if you get caught short, nothing worse than being stuck in a long line someplace with a stinking nappy - or diaper!

While at the Toy Store on 5th, take a look around The Plaza, everyone does, its beautiful, we stayed 3 nights Xmas 99, so Carole could Xmas shop in NY, one of her dreams, came true.
Anyone can walk in before 7pm, the Palmtree restaurant [HomeAlone video] is open to all, there is a great gift shop, just like at the Waldorf - they both SELL towels, so no need to husstle the hotel!

Any Qs just ask

Woohoo Eda :) ! How exciting!!

We do have some past threads on US, including Astrid's trip report plus some other threads here on the UK CB so you imght want to put New York in the Search!

I recommend the open top bus tour which stops right outside the Waldorf - that is if you can sit upstairs (wrap up warm!!) You can get on and off as often as you like in one day. Guest Services in the hotel will probably sell you the tickets.

We found going round in a car frustrating as you needto be able to see up! So as well as the bus we did a lot of walking!

Go EARLY to the Empire State building before the lines form - we were so glad we did. It is also worth a night-time visit.

We took the Statten Island Ferry so we could see the Statue Of Liberty and the harbour from the water. This ferry is free and the wait for the ferry for Ellis Island was an hour but we were able to get on the SI ferry straightaway. We didn't bother to get off, when it reached Statten Island and we bagged front of rail for the return journey so we could take pictures as we approached NY harbour. You do not get close up to the statue on this ferry.

Thanks you for all your suggestions so far, we really are getting excited now.........

RJH39 is there any chance you could post a link to your review, i seem to be having trouble finding it and would love to read it especially since you guys had one year old too....

Many Thanks

hope it works.

You're bound to be asked by friends to get this and that. Do check on your weight/customs allowances before travel.
Don't have fruit with you inbound - US very strict.

Shopping will be hard with a toddler, you may chose just to do the biggies, like Maceys and Bloomingdales - with Camera of course, and the toy store on 5th - don't miss that. Then plan to go back without the little one [bribe someone to have him/her] nd really shop in NY. The clothing District, the jewellery district, the discount shops.......
