Ozo agreed to a date so I booked the Plaza Hotel in NYC for this August IF......... it goes thru. Apparently MS needs a day or two to confirm availibility. So we should either know tomorrow or Tuesday.

I am itching to book airfare/show tickets but now I am concerned, and think I should wait.... Thoughts?

Chances are you will get your reservation. August is an extremely slow time in NYC since many people are on vacation and aren't in the city doing business. The business travelers who usually fill the hotels during the week arent' around.

Laura -

Just returned today from NYC. While we didn't stay at the Plaza, we did check it out. Beautiful hotel.

BTW - There is a three story Disney Store on 5th Ave, had great Disney themed NYC souvenirs - t-shirts, mugs, pins, etc. Of course we had to buy them!

E-mail me if you want more trip details - restaurants, etc.

Laura

My son booked there in January---the process was easy. The place is absoultely beautiful. Be aware though that you must pay to park and it isn't cheap and if you leave and return you must pay again. So that sort of forces you to take the subways. I Think the parking was around $45.00.

Mama Mima is supposed to be a great play....Try for The Lion King, we saw it and it was awesome.

Good Luck and have a GREAT time.:Pinkbounc

Have a great time in the Plaza. Have afternoon tea there.

Try to not rent a car. It's really cheaper and better just to take the cab. Definitely go to Cnetral Park, and window shop on 5th Ave. (Check out Takashimaya, a Japanese store with great flower shop).

Thanks for the info on TDS. I am sure my husband would love to shop in NYC at a Disney store!!! ROFLMBO

Hey, Laura... I am starting to notice a lot of similairites in our vactioning habits! :D

WOW and ADAM.... we are not renting a car! This is a first for me.... I always like to have a car.... but I figure it will work out best just to cab it or take the subway while we are there! Thanks for the imput!

Absolutely no reason to have a car in Manhattan. The location of The Plaza will actually let you walk to many of the attractions and shopping.

We always have a car also. We planned our last trip to New York with the first week having a car and staying with relatives. We then turned in the car and spent the last days at the Plaza. The subways were a whole lot better then when I lived there, Guiliani for President!!!!!

Its a short walk, cab ride or subway to anywhere you want to go. The subway is usually fastest for trips to Chinatown, Little Italy, Wall Street or most other places that are WAY too far to walk. A cab for places less than thirty blicks away.

I agree about the NYC subways. We stayed recently at The Manhattan Club, a deluxe timeshare at 56th & 7th, not far from the Plaza. From the American Museum of Nat'l History (grossly outdated, btw), we took the subways to Little Italy. Some of our relatives, who were with us at the museum, took their car and met us. We waited 25-30 minutes at the restaurant for them. No comparison. :) Have a fun trip!

what do you mean that the American Museum of Natural History is grossly outdated?

Did you explore the new Rose Center for Earth and Space and see the new space show or visit the new Hayden Planetarium. What about the Hall of Planet Earth (my daughter and I spent an entire afternoon in that section alone!) or the the Hall of Human Biology and Evolution? Yes, the core exhibits are still the same (and in excellent condition) as they were 5, 10 or even 20+ years ago. But the museum is constantly updating exhibits and adding new permanent and temporary exhibits. It's not unlike WDW, in which the base attractions are the same, evoking warm and fuzzy memories, yet new items are added to keep you going back. Maybe it's just me (yes I am a AMNH member, as well as a member in a handful of other NY area museums), but I get a kick out of seeing the giant bug window, remembering that creepy-crawly feeling I would get as a child on a school field trip; being able to share my childhood memories with my children while making new memories with them as well.

But I digress... as with all thing in life: to each his own!

what do you mean that the American Museum of Natural History is grossly outdated?

LOL! Easy does it. ;) Yes, I did explore those newer areas. But I saw references to outdated materials & concepts that have been debunked within the last several years. I also saw single theories emphasized as factual rather than offering up the wonderful, debated, opposing theories on some topics. This is a great personal interest of mine too. We thought it was sad to see so many of the exact same, musty, old exhibits we had 30+ years ago, without ANY updating to include all the great new info there is out there in the various fields of study. It looked to us like they just added a couple of new things but hadn't updated anything old with interesting, new descriptive material.

Sorry if that offends you. We needn't agree. I'm glad to read that you support the museum. With more support, they may be able to do more updating, as is appropriate for such a world-class destination's historic, NYC museum. :)

Laura,

I believe one of the Travel Channel's "Great Hotels" episodes is about the Plaza. Keep your eyes on TV Guide online and maybe you can catch it. (Or maybe someone has it taped?!)

Take comfortable walking shoes. We stayed at the Waldorf and walked everywhere. Only took one cab our entire trip - walked the rest! Was a lot like being at WDW, just didn't have to wait in any lines!

Saw 42nd Street at the Ford Center. I highly recommend it.

Lisa P,

I apologize if I sounded abrupt. I guess I'm just one of those diehard NYers who always defends their great city. Plus, job stress is really getting to me today -- can't wait for my long Disney weekend at AKL!

On the subject of NYC museums, a lesser known museum that is fun to visit (especially on those sticky, hot summers days) is the Museum of Television and Radio. It's a great place to relive the past, as you could actually watch/listen to old programs. They also have wonderful exhibits, featuring a particualr artist or genre, etc. Last summer they had a great exhibit about Jim Henson and the Muppets.

Extra Disney Trivia: I grew up on Governors Island (Army base, then Coast Guard, now CLOSED), located just off the southern tip of Manhattan, across from the Statue of Liberty and Eillis Island (had a great view of both, along with the NYC skyline, from my bedroom window!). Walt Disney was detained there, in Castle Williams military stockade, when he was "mistakenly" charged as AWOL during WWI.
