Going Jan 12-19 for a mid-winter getaway. Our longest trip in TT has been 5 hours, but this will be a 10 hour jaunt. Oh no, I get to drive my new Dodge 2500 CTD for 10 hours:thumbsup2 . Well really 5 hours on evening and 5 hours the next morning. No more hotel rooms for me!! :cool1:

I requested loop 1200 or 1300. Those seem to be a good location and come highly recommended on the board.

Congrats!!! I too enjoy no more hotel rooms. No dragging stuff in, getting settled and such. No worries about whether the sheets are clean (well unless I forgot to wash them anyway). It is nice to just pull in, plug in the water and electric and go to sleep. Everything is inside where I need it to be. The kids know where they will be sleeping.

Ain't camper life grand!!!

Congrats!

We almost always visit the Fort on MLK weekend (which looks like it comes just after your visit in 2008).

This year (2007) it was warm the whole weekend. We never even had to wear a jacket. But, in the past, I have been there in January, and it has been COLD! We still go every year- the parks are not as busy as the rest of the year, and the cool weather beats the summer heat.

Enjoy!

Like you, we've booked our first trip to the Fort as well, but we'll be there in December. We love the weather then, and we're SO looking forward to no more hotels.... well, not unless we REALLY want to!

Hey, anyone ever think about a last-minute trip for a long weekend on short notice? My husband suggested that we consider a quick trip in September.... at the Fort, of course. Have you ever had any luck doing something like this?

How exciting, your first trip to the Fort. Trust me when I say you will be hooked the first time you go.

Yes, I have done called in for last minute trips many times. In fact, last March, I had tried from December on to get a site for St. Patrick's Day weekend. The Fort was booked. I began to call every morning at the beginning of March, and I was able to get a preferred site on Tuesday morning for a check in on Friday of that week.

If you are thinking about calling in for a site in the next few weeks, I would think that you would have good luck, as most schools in Florida are starting up again, and there should be less demand for campsites right now.

I'm excited for you. Our first Fort trip was Jan. '06 and we're heading back Jan. 26, 08 (a week after you guys). You will absolutely love it and will most likely never stay in another resort again.

Just curious, where in NC are you? Being we are in Raleigh, we run I-40, I-95, and I-4 all the way. The reason I ask is since you "layover" somewhere, do you know of any good places? We stayed in a pretty decent campground in Ga. last time but are always looking at new places and ideas.:thumbsup2

We're in western NC and will run 77 to Columbia, SC, then 26, and then hit 95in southern SC. We Plan on stopping in either Brunswick, GA or hope to make it to Kingsland, GA (last exit before FL state line) if traffic cooperates. We're leaving around 2 pm on a Friday afternoon.

Friends have stayed at the Kingsland KOA and say it is great for a stopover. All sites are pull thru and you don't need to unhook.

I might check into that one. We stayed at Lake McIntosh RV Park at exit 58. We left 8:00 the next morning and arrived at the Fort around 12:30 (with one fuel stop). It was pretty decent.

But I do think we'll try a new place on the way down. Have a blast.
