We were in the World 9/29 to 10/6. It went by so fast! We had a great time and all the food was great. Here is an overview of where and what we ate:
We arrived Saturday in MCO around noon. We went to DTD and had lunch at Wolfgang Puck Express. DH and I no longer eat wheat, but we threw out our diet for our week in the World and started out with a BBQ Chicken Pizza! Delish. I would definitely get it again.
For dinner we had reservations at Boma. Everything was fabulous as usual. I had Carrot-Ginger soup, Bobotie, Matar Paneer (YUM!!). There was also a wonderful watermelon, tomato and blue cheese salad. Very strange combo but delish. The ribs were just ok not my favorite thing. Way too messy, for sure. We had other items, but I can't remember what they were. For dessert I had the passion fruit panna cotta - wow. I ate several of those. I love passion fruit, though. They also brought us a little tray of special desserts not on the buffet for our anniversary. They were good, but I dont even remember what they were . One was a chocolate mousse or flourless chocolate cake or something. But they were all good with a steaming cup of decaf. Mmmmmmmm.
Sunday we did the Wild Africa Trek first thing in the morning at AK. On the trek they served us a little tin full of goodies. Dried prosciutto and salami, brie cheese and dried apricots, jicama slaw, a small strawberry yogurt with granola topping, and little pita rounds. There was also an edible flower. Everything was delicious.
For lunch we went to Yak and Yeti. We missed it last trip and decided it was a must-do for this trip. We split the lettuce wraps appetizer (it was big!) and an order of egg rolls. Lettuce wraps were fantastic! Loved them and I wish I could go back for them again right now.
It was really, REALLY hot, and so we werent that hungry and didnt have room for a dessert, though I would have loved to try the won tons. Maybe next time.
For dinner we went to Epcot and ate around the world at F&W. We spent a ton of time through the week at F&W so I will go through my reviews for that next.
Looking through my passport, heres what we had:
Terra - Chocolate Cake with Passion Fruit Sorbet and Coconut Foam this was delicious. As I mentioned I love passion fruit! The sorbet was the best part. Cake was a tad dry, and foam is a little weird, but it was a good combination all in all.
Argentina - Beef Empanada one of our favorites. We had this a couple times throughout the trip. The beef was slightly spicy and slightly sweet. Really, really good.
Mexico - Crispy Shrimp Taco - another favorite. So many flavors going on at once like a party in your mouth! Loved it.
Scandinavia - Taste of Scandinavia (cured salmon, Herring, and Shrimp salad). DH and I are German and grew up on this kind of thing so we loved it. We got two of them.
Also had the rice cream (got it from inside its a bigger portion for about the same price). Loved that too. So rich and creamy and not too sweet.
South Africa - Spinach and Paneer Cheese Pocket - I think this was my favorite this year. Got two of them over the course of our trip. They were really big, portion wise. I could eat a hundred of these. But I love Indian food and paneer cheese in particular.
Germany - Schinken Nudel (Pasta Gratin with Ham and Cheese) this was really ho-hum. Very bland pasta with bland sauce and a little bit of ham. It was good, but super boring. We also had a piece of Black Forest Roulade from the CS inside. Very good.
Hops & Barley - Perfect Maine Lobster Roll - we had two of these as well. Very good. Nice toasted roll, garlic butter, and a good portion of lobster meat. The kind of lobster roll the purists love.
Florida Local - Florida Shrimp Ceviche with Fire Roasted Vegetables, Fried Plantains and Cilantro - this was ok, but kind of disappointing. First it was a tiny portion, and second, it didnt have enough citrus-y flavor for my liking. It was too tomatoey. I liked it, but I LOVE Mexican style ceviche more and I guess thats what I was expecting. Wouldnt bother with it again.
Morocco - Kefta Pocket - we didnt get this at the booths - DH went into Tangierine Café and got a regular sized one - he was hungry at one point during the fest and the small portions werent doing it for him considering the amount of beer he was consuming
He needed to balance that out with some more food. But it was delicious. We have eaten at Tangierine many times, so we knew it would be good. Enjoyed the great servers there too two guys both named Omar and I was having fun with them (which was the better Omar - they were showing each other up to prove which of them was better - lots of fun).
New Zealand - Seared Sea Scallop with Kumara- Red Curry Puree and apple Radish Salad - good, but nothing Id go back for again. One scallop wasnt exciting enough for me, and the flavors werent super memorable.
Belgium - Belgian Waffle with Berry Compote and Whipped Cream - always good! Crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside, fabulous berry compote - cant go wrong.
Ireland - Lobster and Seafood Fishermans Pie - we had several of these last year, but only had one this year. We enjoyed it, but we went more for the newer items this year.
Canada - Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup I passed on this over the last several years because I couldnt see spending $4 for 4 Tblsp of soup. But since we've never been to Le Cellier, I just HAD to bite the bullet and try the soup this year. I had to see what all the fuss was about. It was good. Very good. Very glad I tried it, but not something I would go out of my way for again. It was slightly sharp and bacon-y. Really, it was good. Maybe it was just such a hot day that hot soup didnt do it for me.
Wild Mushroom Beef Filet with Truffle Butter Sauce - awesome. DH and I split one, but we could have easily eaten another one. One of the best of the Fest.
Greece - Griddled Greek Cheese with Pistachios and Honey - this was last year's hands down favorite for me, and I loved it again this year. Had a couple of them. Its just such a perfect combo - melty, salty cheese with a drizzle of sweet honey Mmmmm MMMMMMMMMM!
Desserts & Champagne - I got the trio Yogurt Panna Cotta with Orange Cake, Raspberries and Pomegranate, Lemon Custard Verrine with Blueberry Compote and Dark Chocolate Mousse with Chili and Salted Caramel. First off, the Yogurt Panna Cotta was amazing. I went back and got another one of just those. The Chocolate Mousse with the chili was fun. The hot burn after the chocolate was good and unexpected. Didnt taste any salted caramel though. The Lemon Custard was very good too, but we liked the Panna Cotta a lot more.
That was it for the Fest for us. I did stop at Karamel Kueche and got a chocolate-caramel Strawberry and a bag of caramel popcorn. The popcorn wasnt fresh it was soft and chewy. Tasted good though, so I ate it anyway, but it was really soft, stuck together, and very chewy. I suppose I could have asked for a new bag of fresh but as I said, I still ate it anyway
The strawberry was $5 for one and I wouldn't bother with it. It was just a regular chocolate covered strawberry. I couldn't really taste the caramel that was drizzled on top.
So that was Sunday night and Monday. Monday night we went to Via Napoli. After eating around the world (and did I mention it was HOT??!), we didnt have huge appetites, so DH and I split an order of calamari, the house salad for two, and I HAD to have Zeppole! The fried ricotta dough puffs. I went crazy for them last time and I was swooning again this time. And I had a lovely cup of LaVazza coffee with them. Absolute HEAVEN.
Tuesday we went to MK in the morning, and ate at Columbia Harbor House. DH and I each had a Lobster Roll (yes, we love them, I know many think they are gross, but we dont - they are really more like a fake lobster salad sandwhich than a true lobster roll), and we split a cup of clam chowder. Also very good. A little later we split a Dole Whip. Another favorite! We always do pineapple soft serve with pineapple juice. Wish I had one of those right now too
.
Later in the day we went to DHS and had dinner at Brown Derby. It was just ok. I had high expectations for this place, and while it wasnt bad, it wasnt great either. I had the Cobb Salad as appetizer (very good) and for dinner DH and I each ordered an entrée but we split them both. We got Pan-Seared Coriander Dusted Grouper, and Spit-Roasted Bison. Both of them were just meh. Unmemorable. I had to go look back at the menu to even remember what we had. Wouldnt order either of them again. This was the least favorite meal of the entire trip, so Im not complaining! I had the grapefruit cake for dessert (my fav!) and DH had the fruit cobbler. He said it was good. Editing to add, we had the BEST server at HBD! His name was Keith and he was just one of the best servers I think I've ever had anywhere. He was so on top of everything, seemed to genuinely care if we were enjoying our food. I even mentioned to the manager that he was just fantastic. We had good service everywhere we went, but Keith was especially great.
Wednesday we went to Typhoon Lagoon and we split a pulled pork sandwich. Very average. I also had a passion fruit-mango smoothie very good! But more of a slushie than a smoothie. In the evening we went to Cape May Buffet, and really, I think this was my favorite meal! It was my favorite last year, and I was afraid it wouldnt live up to my memory, but it was fantastic. I ate so many things, I dont think Ill be able to name them all. But I LOVE the cod nuggets (which are now on the kids buffet but that didnt stop me from going back for those several times!), the salad with the blue cheese LOVE that salad the crab legs were great, and the cold shrimp all fantastic. I also ate veggies and several other salads but I cant remember what they were. For dessert we had Strawberry shortcake in these cute little glasses, lemon cheesecake, flourless chocolate cake and chocolate mousse. All wonderful. I would eat here every night if I could.
Thursday we were back at Epcot eating around the world during the day. In the evening we went to the Spirit of Aloha show at the Poly. We did this last year as well, and it was nice except for the torrential downpour we had which kind of ruined the evening
. As for the food, it was the same as last year. Salad was great, pineapple bread delicious, fresh pineapple, chicken was particularly good this year, and ribs. The dessert was a disappointment - it was the same as last year (very boring chocolate mousse) but due to the rain, there wasnt even any fanfare in presenting it like there usually is. I was sad about this evening because this is one of the things I look most forward to. I love the show and dont care that its hokey. I think the musicians and dancers are so talented and its very relaxing and transports you to a fantasy world which is why we go to WDW in the first place. So I was kind of bummed that that whole atmosphere was ruined, but the food was good. The show was edited and the dancers never came down from off the top platform where the band is. Running back to the main building in the rain while dressed up wasn't any fun either. I think I would cancel in the future if I knew it was going to rain.
Friday we spent in the pools at our resort (Wyndham Bonnet Creek) and had a burger at the pool bar it was good but nothing amazing. I also had black and blue chips - homemade potato chips with carmelized onions, blue cheese and a balsamic glaze drizzled over the top. They sounded better than they were, but I ate them all anyway so they werent bad. LOL
For dinner we went to Raglan Road House. Another favorite from last year. They sat us smack up against the stage, so we werent wild about those seats (basically looking up the skirts of the dancers), and also we went too early so the band hadn't started - I guess they dont start until 8:00 or 8:30 pm now. The dancers danced to recorded music - (not as much fun as the live music). But for food we had the scallops appetizer which was fantastic. I would order those again in a heartbeat. The chili-lime sauce for dipping was great. Then I had beefy murray (curried beef in a puff pastry shell). It was good, but not as good as last year. DH had fish and chips. Also good but not amazing. For dessert we had the pavlova with raspberry sauce. I cant remember what it was called. Another one that was good, but not worth ordering again. But overall it was fun and I would still go back I would just order some different items next time.
That does it for our feasting in the World! I dreamt of the trip for over a year and I still cant believe its over already.
Thanks for reading and I am happy to answer any questions you might have! Sorry about the weird lack of apostrophes. I wrote this in Word and copied and pasted and a lot of stuff copied over weird.....
