Just back yesterday (12/10) from a fabulous 8-day trip to the World! Here are a couple MGM holiday visit tips that I hadn't seen before--
1. Studio Catering Company, right near the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground, serves hot apple cider, and you can use DP snack credits for it! This was the only place all trip that I saw hot cider available, and one of the few times I saw a "specialty item" available for DP snack credits (there may have been others; just saying this is what I saw). It was GREAT! They also offered roasted chestnuts; we didn't get them so I cannot say if DP credits could be used for these as well.
2. It was a rainy day when we went -- good news = Lights, Motors, Action! was still running (and it was terrific -- a highlight of the trip for DS (7)!), bad news = No Osbourne Lights! I really did not understand this -- by 6 p.m. the rain had stopped completely, and it never POURED during the day, but we were informed by CMs that because of "all the rain," the lights would not be turned on that night. Again, it's weird -- don't they HAVE to be outdoor-grade lights? What difference would rain earlier in the day have made? Also -- and this is the "worst" part in my opinion -- they had no sign up and were not telling the families who were entering the park at 7 p.m.-ish that the lights weren't on! Now, we were disappointed but not devasted; we'd had a great day at MGM that day and would have liked to have seen the lights, but it wasn't as though we made a special trip there just for the lights, etc. etc. My heart broke for all the families who were just arriving as we left -- they were clearly dragging some tired kids, etc., there for the lights. My advice: if there has been rain during the day that you're planning for MGM and Osbourne lights, check in with a Guest Services CM and nicely insist that they make a phone call to check the status if they just say, "oh sure, the lights should be on tonight" or "the lights are on every night" -- unless you don't mind being disappointed.
3. Not just a holiday tip, but if you've never seen Walt Disney: One Man's Dream or The Magic of Disney Animation -- or, if you haven't seen them since these were refurbished, they are definitely worth seeing! We all (inc. DS (7) LOVED these refurbished attractions.
4. Osbourne lights notwithstanding, we found MGM to be an excellent rainy day park. DH walked on to Rock n' Roller Coaster (at about 11 am) and with all the indoor shows/attractions, we did not mind the rain. Oh, but I also need to tell you that there was no parade because of the rain. We're not huge parade people (like to see them when it's convenient/easy to do so) but if you are, then you'll want a rain-free day!
have fun!
