Just Back - met people who traded into OKW

Actually Dean, I know about that week for this year, thanks for mentioning it though. I need 2004 year though - do you think I'll have a problem getting it at some point? I listed myself for three hotels, the Sands, Caribbean and the Islander because at some point on a prior thread people didn't seem satisfied with the Mayan.
For August, 2004 in Cancun, Lord no. I can guarantee you'll get it. The question is whether you will get it in time for air fare choices. I thought you were looking this year. Make sure you only put your top choices becaue if you put VCI, that's what you will get. While a nice place, VCI is not worth a one to one exchange with DVC. Frankly, I'd just put the Sands and would at the least leave out the Mayan as some of the units have not view at all, as you mentioned. Look into direct exchanges.

I think the Royals only deposit 12 months out so I wouldn't expect anything for 2004 us yet. Get back to me late summer and I can look online and see how things are shaping up.

Thanks Dean - I had forgotten about the airfare thing, hopefully I will find out in time!!!! I will definitely remember to reach out to you at the end of the summer - thanks!

Dean,

As always thanks in advance for your reply, your experience in this topic is apreciated! We re looking to trade DVC for Hawaii for this coming XMAS week. I may have a private trade for a condo (posted on Renter's Board) so if that comes through awesome! But if not, I have had searches running via DVC for about a month with no results. What do you think our chances of hitting a match are? Are we crazy thinking we can get this particular week? Is there a particular time we should hope to get a match by? Are there any HI resorts on DVC list not worth 1 to 1 trade? Any guidance would be greatly apreciated!

My husband and I fell for that sales pitch. You know the one where they find out your "really" want to buy Disney, so they zoom in on it, " we are less expensive, and with II, you can trade out to Disney" we fell hook, line, and SINKER. We bought our time share for the express purpose of trading out to Disney. Well, we have owned it now for almost 7 years, and NEVER have we gotten a Disney rental. The first year, HH was available, but we decided to stay closer to home.

Unless something is going on, and it is getting easier to exchange with Disney, I would say the people you met are extremely lucky..in the lucky they won the lottery sense....LOL.

Realizing that the war and related issues have skewed things, I doubt very mucy you'll get a match outside the 60 day window unless you are willing to accept a studio, even then you're at risk. You're already late at this point. Frankly there are many resorts that I personally wouldn't trade into as a 1 to 1 even trade in HI. The resorts I'd likely take that are on the DVC list would include The Marriotts on Maui and Kauai and Hanalei Bay and possibly Intrawest, though it has only Sunday checkins). That's about it. Expect the 2 new Marriott's (new) and Westin to be available eventually and both Embassy resorts (rumored to be changing to II). There are many other resorts I'd consider but not even exchange. Some are better than others though so it depends on how badly you want to go, what you want to do, which island you want and the like. There are a few other resorts I'd consider than are not on the II-DVC list and some only with RCI. If you need a larger unit and don't have kids that need to be entertained, consider One Napili Way. One issue with the 2 current Marriott's is they only have a mini kitchen.

I went through this for our trip last summer. I knew I wanted to use FF miles for the tickets so getting something by the 330 window was an issue. My plan was to look for 2 weeks back to back and hope I got at least one before I needed to make my airline reservations. I would then make assumptions and make my air reservations then if necessary make cancellable rental or hotel reservations. I worked through II directly, DVC-II request, SFX, Trading Places, Platininum Interchange and direct exchange listings (TUG mostly). I was offered Kona Coast through DVC soon but I declined that one for several reasons to include the fact it's a fairly easy exchange and I could get it with my cheaper timeshares and the Big Island wasn't really where we wanted to go. I was offered the Schooner through I think it was TP but declined as that wasn't where I wanted to go and I felt the quality was below our tolerance. I was also offered Lawaii Beach through someone (I forget who) and with the way they assign units felt it was too risky. I ened up joining SFX and doing a request first through them and got a 1 BR a the Embassy on Maui using an Aruba week. I then concentrated on Kauai and got a direct exchange at the Embassy there for a 2 BR for 168 points but the other party ended up offering it as a rental instead at $900 and I felt the 168 points were worth more to me than $900 so I paid the rental fee instead. I then went back to SFX and gave them my second Aruba week for a second 1 BR at the Embassy.

So 2 weeks in HI for $84 fees on the FF, $900 rental, $149 3 year SFX membership, $198 exchange fees (SFX), $760 maint fees (2 Aruba weeks) and $500 or so interisland (8 segments). I ended up using none of my best traders (though the Aruba were very good) and no DVC points.

My advice is to do some soul searching and decide how important it is to you. You're already past the FF mile window so I doubt you're going that route. Decide what unit size, what islands, what weeks and what resorts you're willing to accept. Then go out and get them much as I did. Good luck, I hope this helps.

Dean,

Thanks so much for your insight! We are planning to use FF miles, but we are booking Delta 60k mile Sky Choice tickets which are still available (and likely will be to the end due to high miles) so we can be a little flexible with dates for awhile yet. You mentioned we were already late, we started this at 11 months out. When should we have begun if we truly wanted a solid match? Really I hope I only need this for the future as it looks like the condo on Oahu is coming thrugh for us (one posted on rental board) as a trade for points. We do have 2 older children (16 and 13 by trip time) so extra space would be nice, but the frilly kid stuff isn't as important. We have never been to HI and have NO IDEA what we want out of this other than we always wanted to go.... Oahu seems like a decent choice, though many push us toward Kauai or Maui, but we really have no idea... Oahu seems to have a mix of everything, but may be more urban? We are definite BEACH people Want to Snorkel, Scuba, Swim and relax. Love great food, especially seafood. Like the resort environment (might be lacking in the condo development...) The condo site is www.kailanihawaii.com and anyone reading this interested in renting should visit the rental board (shameless plug for Melanie) and read the post. Anyway any other tips / suggestions would be great!

BTW having posted / lurked for 3 + years on this board, I want to grow up and and be just like you :) How can you possibly vacation enough to warrant all the ts's you own? Must be NICE :smooth: .. Maybe one day  ....

Thanks again for your veiws!

Doug

Doug, anything less than 12 months out puts you behind as there are likely units that have come and gone. If you included KCR in your choices, you should list that at 2 years out if possible. For your first trip a week on Oahu and a week at either Kauai or Maui would be ideal, Maui would be my preference by far in this situation. Personally, I'd plan a week on Maui and then try to fly in or out of Maui leaving you with only one interisland leg, that saves you about $250 total. You can use FF miles for interisland as well, I wish I'd known that before I'd book my interisland flights. For the air fare, why not try to do the restricted flights for 30K miles, you can always send the extra my way.

I can't take off enough time to use all the weeks I own. I have been trying to pare down somewhat to a core of things I mostly use and I'm pretty much there. I use or rent out DVC. I use or rent out Marriott's Grande Ocean. I plan to use mostly the Paradise village points by using 2 years points for one trip every 2 or 3 years. I always have people wanting to rent March there but it hasn't worked out to rent thus far. I then have the Marriott Habour Pointe week which I use to trade into other Marriott's. We usually do a big week in the South East EOY and invite family at our expense. In 97 it was VB, in 99 is was OKW (last year for free passes), in 01 it was two 2 BR units at HH (Monarch) for a week and this year it's 2 Grande Ocean HH units for 4th of July. I could likely dispose of the trading Marriott week and just have the odd year to trade Paradise Village to trade and also do direct exchanges but I enjoy playing with it so that I will likely stay where I am. I have sold one of the Aruba weeks and have a trade for DVC points almost completed for the other but I am having withdrawal already so I may end up looking for another week there.

Good luck.
