Just back this afternoon and wanted to post about our disappointment in Akershus. We had been there 4 years ago, pre-princess, and really enjoyed the buffet. We are all adventurous eaters so it was fun to try some different foods that we don't get at home (vs Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Middle Eastern, etc). I knew that they no longer had the buffet, but here's the way it went for those of you looking into it. Oh, and another thing - I have two DS 11 and 14, so we were not looking for princess element (actually we did take a lot of pics as DS14 blushed redder than a tomato whenever a princess came by, LOL
). Anyway, first they bring some nice breads and a nothing-exciting salad - lettuce and a vinaigrette. Then, a pre-plated appetizer plate: 3 slices each of muenster, swiss and brown goat cheese, a scoop of potato salad, chicken salad, and sometimes shrimp salad (all very mayonnaise-y), 3 small slices of gravlax and 3 small slices of smoked salmon surrounding a mound of cold scrambled eggs. No herring.
Entree choices were pasta with grilled chicken and sundried tomato pesto, salmon with capers on mashed potatoees, cod with a seafood topping with horseradish mashed potatoes, a venison stew....and something else which now eludes me. 5 entree choices, none of which blew us away. Everything we had (the 3 others besides venison) were fine but nothing exceptional. I had to ask for a plate of mashed rutabagas, which were good. Dessert is pre-plated: Norwegian Christmas pudding, which is rice pudding with strawberry topping (this was good), some lingonberry bars (nothing special), and chocolate mousse. For $27.99 per person this was all just a bummer. The atmosphere is really rather unexciting. So if you're looking for something different, this is just not a good value.
BOMA, on the other hand, was phenomenal!!!
Go there and try all the different, well prepared dishes, speak with the chefs and knowledgeable servers, and enjoy. A much better value, with choices for the meeker people in your party (but encourage them to try!). Great value though the dining room is rather loud. We were so immersed in trying little bits of everything (great soups, too), that the noise level wasn't an issue for us. But it's not a romantic, quiet ambiance if that's what you're looking for. The food, again, is great, and they can give you a little card where you write your emaila ddress and they will send you any recipes you request!
Bon Appetit!!!
