We just returned the other day from another wonderful trip to WDW. However, one night we had a really strange experience.

We were returning to AKL on the night of the Wine and Dine Half Marathon. We knew from the staff at the hotel that it was going to interrupt the roads and blocks certain areas, etc, and all they told us that "bus service was definately your best bet for travel this evening". Well, we were returning from Epcot at about 10:30pm, I think, and the road closures had already started. Before we knew it, we were definately in areas we had NEVER seen before, in 15+ trips to Disney. It was very dark, but best we can tell, we were in the "bowels" of Animal Kingdom. They were windy, dark roads, lined on both sides with high barbed-wire fences, small trailers, piles of materials, greenhouses and plants growing in large quantities, safari vehicles lined up like a used-car lot, and a few times we actually went through heavily guarded "checkpoints" (think Jurrasic Park). It was CREEPY, but for real Disney freaks like us, it was an awesome chance to see behind the scenes. When we got off the bus, my husband said to the driver, "Do we get a pin with this behind-the-scenes tour?" The driver just laughed and said "You weren't supposed to be paying attention.....".

Sounds like where ONSTAR directed us a few weeks ago, but it was in the daylight so it wasn't too bad, the guard at a checkpoint laughed and said "Onstar does that alot" and very nicely gave us directions back to the real world!

There's definitely some weird creepy looking roads to be found around the property if you happen along them.

Nice. Love this...

a long time ago with a Disney bus, too.

I thought of it as a special experience. I would never venture out on my own to do this by car, not are all places car accessible even though they are Disney bus friendly.

I liked doing it, but we did it the day time. I felt like I was getting a special peek at everything Disney.

Where you went through is not really a "backstage" area, per se, as it's open to anyone (the guard checkpoint just happens to be a shortcut from MK to AK) ... it just happens to be an obscure and unneccessary route of travel for anyone visiting the parks. Where you were is near WDW Horticulture where all the plants including the carved shrubery are grown and cultivated. If I remember correctly, the sewage treatment plant for the property is somewhere near there as well.

You're so lucky! Even if this isn't truly a 'backstage' area that you travelled through, it is definitely off the beaten path usually travelled by guests. I would have had my nose pressed up against the bus windows the whole time!

I'll guess it involved Savannah Circle Dr. and Bear Island Road.

Ah yes, that's the name! It's been so long I'm beginning to forget the names but yes that's it!

If Savannah Circle (East and West) are accessible to guests, what's to keep them from going down Conservation Way? Or any of the other backstage areas? That road runs right through the backstage area of AK.

Hmmm! I wonder if my GPS can find Savannah Circle Drive or Bear Island Road. Shall be putting it to the test in June.

We got lost one night going from DTD to TTC. It was our last night and we wanted to take some MK fireworks photos. We think we ended up somewhere very dark near Fort Wilderness and a very nice security guard led us out and about to the Contemporary Parking lot.

We told the security guards there that we had no idea how we got there and to please show us how to get to the TTC parking area. The security guard said, "Why don't you just park here?" I said, "Are we allowed?" And he said, "Sure, why not, you were honest about it."

It was the end of a day of many magical happenings.

Due to an increase in the number of Live Report and Just Back threads, the Theme Parks Attractions and Strategies Moderator Team has decided to start moving these over to our trip report forum. The purpose of the theme parks attractions and strategies board is to help people find valuable information to plan their trips, discuss the attractions, and changes that are happening at Disney World.

Live trip reports, and just back threads are really a better fit for our trip report board. You can find the trip report forum here:

http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=18

We know that everyone loves to talk about their trips, and we do love to hear about everyone's trips. So, please share your trip stories, and read about other trip stories over on our trip report forum Danny
