Just back from Tropical Palms

We spent the last 9 nites of our WDW trip in a 2 bdr cottage (#50, right next to kiddie pool) at the Tropical Palms so I thought I'd offer my opinions for anyone who is interested:) There were 6 of us: my elderly mother who had the bdr w/ a dbl bed to herself; my 14 y/o and 5 y/o dd's who shared the loft; and my 5 y/o and 2 y/o ds's who slept w/ me in the queen bdr. We didn't bother using the sleeper sofa, but the last 2 nites my 5 y/o dd came down from the loft during the nite and slept on the sofa (not pulled out into a bed) because it was too warm for her in the loft. I had the a/c really cranked the whole time we were there because it was so hot in FL last week, and I noticed the temp inside the cottage really varied by location. The loft, being up near the ceiling was always too warm, the queen bedroom below the loft was always pretty cold (it's 3 steps lower than the rest of the cottage) and the main level was just right;) I really enjoyed our stay there and it worked out well for our family size; I think it would have been a little cramped with 8 people though; the sofabed would have taken up most of the living room if we'd had to pull it out all the time. A few negatives I thought I'd mention: if you have kids, BE CAREFUL about the dining room table! It has a heavy glass top that just sits balanced on a wicker center stand. It's stable enough if you use it as intended, but if you have kids (like mine) who think it's a good idea to climb up on the edge of the table, look out! The very heavy top will tip right off! Luckily I was sitting right there to avert disaster, but I can only imagine what that table top could do to a child if it fell on one. Bathroom is very tiny but serviceable. Allow plenty of time for everyone to do their grooming or whatever because you can't get more than one person at the small sink/mirror at a time. There is storage for makeup, toiletries, etc. in the small cabinet behind the bathroom mirror. No storage for clean towels in the bathroom though; we had to keep ours in the closet of the dbl bedroom so anyone wanting to shower would have to go into that bedroom to get towel/washcloth. The doorknob on the bathroom door was very difficult to open, esp for kids and my mom with arthritis in her hands. Also there was a small sliding door btw the bathroom and dbl bdr and the latch was partially broken and very difficult to latch. The faucet on the kitchen sink leaked. The a/c register covers were very rusted and needed to be replaced. There were areas which were quite dirty, especially around the closet sliding door tracks, grout lines etc. I don't mean to be TOO negative, don't get me wrong--we WOULD go back as it's a great value for a large family--it's just not a 3 or 4* joint by any means. The kiddie pool was great for our 2 and 5 y/o kids. The big pool was nice as well. We did eat breakfast at the poolside cafe one morning. Cheap enough for sure, but none of us liked the food. Basically cafeteria quality scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and so on. Quicker and better breakfast right in the cottage with a bowl of cereal or a bagel! Kitchen was very handy for early morning quick breakfast to get out to the parks fast. We only made two dinners in the cottage because I had made way too many PS's (so many restaurants, so little time!) but ;you could save alot on the food budget by using it more than we did. Fridge, stove, and DW all full sized. Laundry facilities large and clean; plenty of washers and dryers--I never had to wait. Any questions? I'd be glad to answer!

Sue, glad you made it back from your trip. We used Tropical Palms for two nights last October when we went to the wine festival at Epcot. We have two teens and they always fight when we stay in a hotel. We loved having extra room. They didn't fight once. Plus they could branch out and play basketball, go skateboarding, run to the pool or visit to the gift shop. The employees were very helpful. At the last minute we upgraded from a studio to a 2bdr and they were very accommodating. Sorry that your cottage wasn't as clean as it should have been. How were your disney ps'?

Thanks for the great information. Are the bedrooms big enough that you could take a mattress from the loft and put it on the floor of one of the bedrooms? I have two DDs who hate sharing a bed when we're away, but want to sleep in the same room.

How close was it to Old Town? Could you actually walk there? If you went there, was it worthwhile? How long was the drive from Tropical Palms to MK?

TracyQ,

There is barely enough room around the beds to walk--about 1 foot on one side of the bed and maybe 1.5 or 2 ft. on the other side. Then there is about 2 or 3 feet of space between the foot of the bed and the closet. No way you could fit anyone on the floor in the bedrooms, but if you left your bdr door open the kids could sleep on the sleeper sofa and feel very close to you;) We didn't actually go to Old Towne but you do drive right past it on your way to the cottages. You *could* walk there if you're energetic; depending on where your cottage is located I'd guess it would be about a 15-20 minute walk? But then you'd have to carry your purchases back, so I'd probably just drive. The drive to the parks was very quick and easy--I'd say about 10 minutes from our cottage to the TTC parking lot to go to MK. I don't think it would be much quicker to drive from alot of the Disney resorts, so no worries there!

Jane E.,

I'm thinking that maybe the cottage we had was used more than most due to it's great location right near the kiddie pool, laundry facilities, and big pool too. Maybe that's why it was so worn. Sure couldn't beat the location though! Took me maybe 45 seconds to walk to the laundry room, so I didn't have to sit there waiting on laundry. We enjoyed most of our PS's very much; our very favorites were:

1. Hollywood & Vine buffet dinner--outstanding food, IMO!
2. Boma for dinner-I was skeptical about this one, esp. with picky kids, but everyone found plenty to eat! Salmon was delish! Kids loved the fried sweet potatoes.
3. 1900 Park Fare breakfast buffet--yummy cheeze blintzes topped with strawberries, kids loved the Mickey waffles, nobody left hungry!

We also enjoyed Garden Grille, Liberty Tree Tavern, Rose & Crown, Beaches & Cream for dinner, Columbia Harbour House for lunch.

Somewhat disappointed in Cape May Clam bake (dinner) but I didn't like the clams or mussels and I guess they are the big draw. The peel & eat shrimp were ok, but I'm really picky about my shrimp being deveined, and these weren't. I spent way too much time deveining my shrimp before I could eat them, but that's just my little neurosis:rolleyes: Cindy's breakfast was ok, but I felt like we were being rushed through to get the next party in; San Angel Inn for lunch was overpriced IMO; I didn't think their food was any better than ChiChi's or Carlos O'Kelley's. Kona Cafe for breakfast was ok, but IMO not spectacular enough to warrant the prices.

I'm scared to get my Amer. Express bill, that's for sure!

Sue it sounds like you had a great time! I love trying out the restaurants just as much as going to the theme parks. Last year we tried Boma and loved it. We were both surprised because we don't like buffets. However, our food was very good. I told dh if we ever go again, I'm eating all deserts! I'd like to try Jiko and see how it compares. The night we ate at Boma, Jiko looked much calmer and quieter. I thought San Angel was worth the money just to get out of the heat. LOL! I've never gotten to try Hollywood and Vine. We have two teenaged boys and every time we go to Disney MGM, they want to eat at Sci Fi! As long as I can get cooled off, I don't care. Thanks for your food reviews. It sounds like you had a great time!

Tracey - We have been to Orlando twice and both times spent a lot of time at Old Town. They have quite a few rides (fair type), and really neat shops. We enjoy walking around on Saturday night when they have their cruise night (hundreds of old cars are lined up, and they have live music and entertainment...
