We just got home tonight from 6 glorious days at The Wilderness Lodge.

Several days before we left, I sent a fax stating that even though we only reserved and paid for a standard view, would appreciate a complimentary upgrade to a better view if one was available at the time of check in.

We didn't arrive until approximately 8:30pm, and as I was checking in I wanted to make sure we had a non-smoking room, so I asked about it, and that was when I was told we were given a complimentary upgrade to a woods view!

We were in room 6201, facing the Wilderness Lodge Villas. Our room was in excellent condition, with bunkbeds, a request I had made when I booked the room. This room is a corner room, so it was very quiet.

Here is a photo of frost on the rooftops of the WL Villas...something you don't see too often in Florida!

And looking slightly to the right, this was what we saw:

I imagine that the rooms that overlook the lobby would be very noisy, the lobby is always bustling with people just visiting, or there for dinner at the Whispering Canyon Cafe, or Artist's Point.

I thought it was a beautiful resort, and has a very warm and welcoming ambiance.

The only little detail I was disappointed in was that the fireplaces there are gas. I think wood burning fireplaces would have added so much more to the atmosphere, but I imagine it would be more expensive and require more work to load the wood.

Our mousekeeper was wonderful, we now have a collection of animals made of towels, a duck, a bird and a monkey!

If I can help anyone with any questions, please feel free to ask!

Blondie:

We have stayed at the WL several times over the last few years. At one time, the large fireplace in the lobby, burned wood. I loved the smell of the fire. A couple of years ago they stopped burning wood and went to gas. I was told that the fire brick had to be replaced because the "real fire" destroyed it. I do miss the wood fire.

Welcome back Blondie, great to hear about your upgrade. A little Disney Magic to start the vacation off.

We leave 2/12 for the Poly. I'm very excited this will be Granddaughter Lucy's 1st trip.

I have never stayed at WL but would like to in the future. How was the transporation to and from the MK? Did you take the boat?

What were the temperatures like while you were there? Seems like their winter has been colder then normal. I'm wondering how to pack. Were the evenings cold?

Im glad you had a great time Blondie!!! We love WL also!!
It is one of our favorites!!! :)

Mamu, we did take the boat to and from the MK several times. It's a nice ride on Bay Lake, I liked it better than a bus ride!

Other than that, it did seem to take a while to get anywhere else because sometimes the bus stopped at the Grand Floridian, and other times it stopped at Fort Wilderness. Even though we were packed in like sardines, the bus still stopped at the GF. One mother and her 4 children attempted to board, took a look at the standing room only situation, then told the bus driver that she didn't think it was safe, and would wait for the next bus!

Regarding the weather, the first three days were very nice, and on Wednesday (the 22nd) it got up to 73 degrees. Thursday it started out in the low 60's, but got windy and cold in the afternoon. Friday it was only 30 degrees in the morning when we started out. Yes, it was very cold...not what I had in mind for Florida, but what are you going to do? I took a picture of the frost on the rooftops of the WL Villas, I'll post it when I get them developed!

Gary M, I would have loved to have seen the WL fireplaces with a wood fire going in it. It would have been so nice and warm to stand next to. It just seems weird having this big huge fireplace, and hardly any warmth coming from it!

...interesting that you made stops at GF. The WL bus routing must have been altered sinces last July/Aug., because we NEVER stopped at any of the monorail resorts. However, we ALWAYS stopped at Ft W, and the bus rides to DTD were EXTREMELY long!

Kimmar - we were at WL 12/23-29 and some of the buses did stop at the GF, some at Ft. Wilderness. It seemed odd.

Welcome home, Blondie! :)

Thanks for the review--glad to hear you were able to snag an upgrade!

:)

Blondie, I know this is a stupid question... do you get to keep the towel animals? We got quite a few last time we were there and I hated to leave them but I didn't know we could take them... :(

I love the Lodge but I know what you mean about the fireplaces... that is one of my only complaints,too... We love being there when there is a nip in the air!!

I am so glad you had such a nice time!!

Did you actually keep the towel animals? You realize that is a big no no! LOL! I kept one tiny bunny and heard about from this board! As for gas fireplaces, I too think wood would be nice but can't imagine how many CMs would have to keep it burning. We had a lobby room and it really was quiet. We didn't hear anything and it was so nice to open your door and look at the lobby. I thought the WL was beautiful but didn't care for the transportation problems. Did you have any thoughts on that?

Glad you had a great trip, Blondie--you didn't miss much here--just the coldest week I can remember for a long time!

When we stayed at the Poly and GF in December 2001, our buses stopped at the WL as well. It wasn't too bad, but the place was a lot emptier.

I'll see you over on the Debate Board when this one gets too hot thanks to your towel animal theft.;)

Its getting warm.;)

Don't want to miss the debate! I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to take the towels though. Next thing you know, Disney will find out about this and tell Mousekeeping that they can't make the towel animals anymore because of the lost towels. ;)

LOL--WL has all my credit card information...they know where to send the bill for the 4 or 5 washclothes it took to make the towel animals!

Oops, I also swiped enough Mickey shampoo and soap to clean a small country!

Now that stuff I take!!! One year someone gave out little shampoos to all the kids at my DDs then daycare! Kinda funny! My husband said he'd deny knowing me if I did that. :D
