Before anyone barb-b-ques me this is just IMHO. When planning this trip I had intially chosen the Poly but switched because they have no Hot tub. This ended up being a good reason since the temps were so frigid. My parents were also along on this trip and my Dad had always been longing to stay at the GF so that helped seal the deal. The first 5 nights we spent at the AKL for the second time and it was absolutely perfect! This trip I decided to split with a monorail resort since we now had our 4month old DD in tow.

WE arrived at the GF at 10:30 after departing AKL . The plan was to park the cars and hit MK and check in later. There were no spots left in Self park so I had our van valeted which always makes me nervous...its hard enough for me to park the Big Behemoth let alone a poor valet, lol! Mom was having "troubles" with handicap parking so I decided while she gets her car in order I might as well check us in. The woman who checked me in was obviously not feeling well as copious snot was dripping out her nose and on to her keyboard, hand etc...I have a very strong stomach and things like this usually do not get to me but this was to the point of making my stomach turn. She knew she was "snotting" everywhere as she anounced her allergies were really "bad today." But I digress....I had 2 rooms reserved under my AP discount as I have had done for 5 years now. Alway splitting the reservation with my parents on arrival. Never have I had difficulty at ANY of the WDW resorts until now. I was bluntly told "they can't do that." After I explained I just came from AKL where they split it without any difficulty as it has been done every year. No we can't do thst was the response. Since I did not want to behave like a witch on vacation or stand there any longer being exposed to whatever she had I thought I just deal with it at checkout and off to the MK we went.
Our rooms were in Sago Cay with a marina view. The rooms are beautifully appointed and are much larger then AKL. The mini bar is convient to have. All agree that the rooms are nicer at GF then AKL. The beach pool was very nice and the slide better then AKL per my DD's. The lifeguards were very pleasant and let my 5yo use a pair of water wings so we didn't have to go thru the whole "get a vest from the marina" business. At AKL the vest are available without any hassle poolside. The bathroom had mold here and there nothing to get to excited over. That night I put my 5 and 8yo in the tub. My daughter asked why there was all this toilet paper in the tub. I didn't know why went to open the drain that was already open..strange that the tub wasn't empty. After if finally drained I threw them in the shower. The next morning the same thing happened to my parents room but it never drained. Maintance came and fixed the tub. I hesitate to even post this but I am wondering if the pipes didn't back up!! Was that used toilet water and paper in my kids tub? God the thought of that possiblity is to much for me to take and I prefer to not think about that anymore. Maybe someone here could reassure me that they are to sperate waste removal pipes and that could never happen..right?
My parent decided the cold was to much and decided to leave 2 days early. A very nice CM, Ariel, who was "earning his ears" attempted to help with the room charges. He charged my parents room cost to their AMEX then he had to credit my CC back for 2 nights of their room because they were leaning early. He got his trainer and after 45 min they were able to credit one night back. After a 5 minute arguemnt with the trainer that it is yes 2 nights not one and another CM they proceeded to take another 15 min to credit the additional night. Ariel apoligized I told them that I was trying to avoid alll this by having the reservation split as was done in aKL he asked his traiiner why they couldn't do that. Her response was that it causes a major hassle. I looked her straight in the eye and said "more hassle then this!!!" She did not have a response. This whole saga of checkin and checkout to me was unexceptable especially at the GF. I heard more often "we can't" then "I would be happy to do that." I have read trip report on GF concierge that weren't flattering and my experience would extended that also to the "regular" staff as well. It was not the experience I would have expected from the flagship resort. Personally I think the AKL is a much better deluxe all around.

As a side bar ..my Mother is the type that needs her Java ASAP in the AM. SHe brings her own coffee and gets it ready the night before especially at WDW since the nescafe is so aweful. GF was the only resort in 5 years that could not provide a coffe maker. I personally think this is crazy any motel 6 can provide a coffee maker. When I called housekeeping they basically said order room service(nescafe, yuk!). Again not what I would consider an appropriate response from the GF Staff.

Another note for those of you how are considering the GF for the monorail. It is awesome for the MK without a doubt but it took us 55 minutes to get to Epcot using the monorail and having to push a stroller up and down 2 monorail stations. By buss from AKL it took 25 minutes and alot less walking. IMHO if you monrail resort I would choose the Poly since you are able to "walk" to the TCC.

Welcome home and thanks for the detailed report. It's sad to hear about your stay at the GF. Sounds like there were some major customer service issues during your stay. :(

I've encountered the coffee maker problem at the BC, too. You'd think that coffee makers would be a standard amenity at the Deluxe resorts (it used to be several years ago).

As for the front desk mess you encountered--what a nightmare. I had a similar situation and it seems like credits do take forever for some reason. And you are so right--you should be hearing more "can do" rather than "can't" at the GF (and all the Disney resorts for that matter). It is excellent customer service and quality that built the Disney reputation. If "attitudes" and problems keep happening, it will eventually catch up with them. I have been fortunate to have very "grand" stays during my visits to the GF. The one exception was a stay at the RPC a year ago.

I'm not sure what to say about the toilet paper/tub incident. Not to sound gross, but if it was a waste-water back-up, I'd imagine you'd see more than toilet paper. There would probably be disgusting water there, too. I can imagine your horror! Yuck!

You will probably receive a questionaire in the mail in regards to your stay. Hopefully, some of these issues can be brought to the attention of the GF.

LOL...you have such a way with words...I was in stitches reading your description of the CM when you checked in ! We stayed at the GF in Dec. and requested a coffee maker and was told they no longer provide them. I thought maybe it was something they had stopped at all the resorts. I was disappointed in that. As you said, every hotel even motels you stay at these days have a coffee maker.

Wow, sounds like a thoroughly unmagical stay at GF -- the flagship of WDW?!? Reports like this make me wary of ever staying there -- like I could afford it!

About the TP in the tub -- I checked with my DW who works for a water/sewer company. If you were on the 1st floor of the building, it is remotely possible this was due to a wastewater backup. However, in a hotel, there would have to be a major backup affecting toilets and tubs throughout the first floor. Toilets and tubs are on separate lines, but it is possible for a backup to occur and flow back into the tub.

If you were on a 2nd floor or higher, it is "very unlikely" (per DW) that this was a sewer backup. Most likely someone dropped a wad of TP in the shower and did not bother to clean it.

Either way, housekeeping should have cleaned that out and it should have been caught BEFORE you got to the room. YUCK! :(

Steve THANK YOU! Now I can sleep at night. I figured that it couldn't really be waste water but the possiblilty was just a little to much to think about. I feel much better now!

Misti..I will have to make sure Mom never stays at BC,lol! It's not pretty seeing her without her java.

I admire your good humor about the situation:D

When we were at the GF in June of 2001, we couldn't get a coffee maker either. DH had to make the trek from Big Pine Key every morning, preferably before I got out of bed;)

Yikes, people think they are being so noble going to work when they are sick but that is what ill time is for. I've argued with my nurse sister about this for years-she has NEVER callled in sick, but goes in like your reservation clerk. I can't imagine hanging over my labor patients and newborns with a runny nose!

The Swan and Dolphin supposedly provide coffee makers as part of that extra $10 fee.

I can't believe you couldn't get a coffee maker at GF - ours was in the room at CBR! We didn't use it as we were close to OPR - but the option was there (if we did use the coffee provided though, there was a charge)

Well, I think you had my desk clerks from several years ago.

All in all, I was underimpressed with this hotel on my stay. The physical plant is wonderful. The front desk staff was so-so. The Valet is horrible and the bell clerks weren't too swift! Everytime I valeted my car, I had to beat someone to come take the keys from me and it takes forever to get the car back!

My front desk staff charged me for the same room twice and it took MONTHS to get that fixed. (Amex finally just removed the charge!)

I am sorry to hear about your troubles. I have had rooms split at AKL, BC and ASMovies, where I made reservations for myself and my parents. I had to insist on it at AKL though, they said it couldn't be done and had to ask a Manager.

Just a side note: my Mom got a coffee maker sent to her room in October at Beach Club!

We stayed at GF...once and only once!

We spent 7 days there for the Millenium New Years celebrations...booked it 10 years ahead and paid a fortune...not a small fortune...a fortune!

Stayed Concierge/Royal Palm Club and it was one bad thing after another, which in itself is disappointing, but more than that the manner in which our concerns were dealt with left much to be desired. It seems the staff here have major attitude probs!

Just spent this past Christmas/New Years at AKL and thought it was wonderful! I have stayed at all the Resorts and this is my new favourite! You can keep The not-so Grand Floridian!

What a shame for you all....:(

Being too broke to afford the deluxes is sounding better and better!! :p

I'd be very upset to get service like that at the All Stars - I'd be livid at a place like the Grand Floridian!

Just so it doesnt sound all bad for the Grand. We have stayed there twice in the last 18 months, for a week on both occasions. Both times we found it was excellent. Everyone was so helpful, from the checkin all the way through to the check out! Theye even split packs of pennies to find the shiney ones, and I dont mean just the odd pack either!
It does sound like youve had a bad experience, but hopefully it is the exception not the norm! Did you think about having a word with one of the shift managers. While we were there last time had a problem at checkin, taking a long time, got the room wrong if memory serves. He went to see the manager at the checkin desk and he was apparantly very apologetic and they got a room upgrade and several other freebies waiting for there kids when they got back that night!!
Just thought I'd add a little positive to an otherwise negative thread!

We to had a terrible time checking in trying to get my Mom charging privildges on her own account. It never did happen. So we didn't charge anything to our room while we were there so that there wouldn't be a mix up. AKL was a completely different story. They couldn't have been nicer. We had a dirty shower at the GF which really I thought was alful for a 5* hotel. No toilet paer in the tub though. I get the shivers when ever I think about it. You can send a letter to the manager or e-mail guest services about the whole thing. I would have reported our shower while there but my Mom was traveling with us and I didn't want to upset her anymore than she had been already. I haven't heard anthing except that they were checking into things and would be back with me soon.

You'd think Disney's "flagship resort" would already have coffee makers in the room.

I requested one at the WL during check in and within an hour there was one in our room.

Mabye that trip DH and I are planning on taking sans children won't be at the GF afterall.

I think the previous comments often relate to the high price and expectations of a GF stay. We were at the GF for 2 nights over the Christmas 2001 high season. Given the price for a MK view at that time of year, the stay needs to be absolutely perfect.

Like CarolA says, the GF's phisical plant really is something. But a nice building, location, and view is just the beginning for a hotel that aspires to greatness. Your guests must be made to feel that the entire staff of CM's is there to make everything perfect, and when the unavoidable problems arise, to solve them quickly, efficiently, and pleasantly. On this the GF seems to fail in some guests' eyes. Is the standard high? You bet. But if you wish to play in the really big leagues of hospitality, you must deliver to this standard.

I mean we enjoyed our stay, and hearing the wolf/werewolf/whatever howling all night at the Haunted Mansion was a trip. The question is, would we do it over? Is it that much better than the WL, BWI, YC? If guests decide the answer to that question is no, then the GF has problems.

Lastly to Blondie, I probably would avoid the GF on a romantic couple trip. The place is absolutely crawling with youngsters, about half of whom are well behaved, and the other half are on the other end of the behavior scale. The pools and hot tub particularly are difficult to enjoy with your significant other when a 4 year old spends the entire time jumping in right next to you, splashing you, and generally behaving like a brat, of course while his loving parents watch the entire thing. And forget about help from the CM's on that, they have strict orders to not rein in the little darlings' fun, even when it inconveniences other guests. For quiet and solitude, the YC and its quiet pools are much more relaxing and romantic.

Why no more coffee makers? I bet they're trying to make us all think twice about booking conceige! Resorts without this option have abundant coffee makers!

I find those petty "rules" fluctuate so much depending on who the cast member is, who is registering you. I feel they can bend the rules, if they're this type of person. The more seasoned they are, the more chance they'll allow oddities. Not that booking 2 AP rooms is an oddity. I've done it at least twice without a problem.

And, when there's an issue, and they disappear...where are they going...what are they doing...who are they talking to? I always visualize them sitting in the back, reading a magazine, waiting for the crowd to thin so no one will overhear your conflict.

I'm not sure if you asked for a manager, but this has helped me. We waited 4 hours for a fridge at BC last fall. Our Goodings food was spoiling. No one would help. Talk to a manager, have him/her walk with you to an area where there's other people around, and you'll be successful. I'm not saying this to get away with something unfair. But, if you're justified, stand tall (and in a crowd).

Lesson: maybe try to avoid "ears in training."

I am glad to read some of the posts here on GF - I need to adjust my expectations before staying there. The DW and I have been talking about staying there, but have not yet. Now, at least, I know they are not perfect.

BTW, I agree with steering clear of the "Ears in Training". Usually that means "Be prepared to spend 2-3 times the amount of time at the counter than folks on either side of you" and "Hopefully we will get it right by the second try". (too many stories there to tell) The few "Ears in Training that I have had that were OK were about to be regular CMs.

I also agree that AKL is an overall better resort. We stayed at the RPC over the Christmas holidays and while we enjoyed ALOT of our stay it was by far NOT perfect. And quite frankly, at those prices, people really do expect near perfection. When we stayed at the AKL concierge in April it was nearly perfect and much less $$! Except for one pompous CM in the lounge we had nothing but great things to say about AKL and look forward to doing it again soon!

As far as the GF....I would do it again but most likely NOT RPC. It was elegant, understated and beautiful during the holidays but it lacked a certain something I just can't put into words. That said, I am Very happy I got to experience it. The rooms were absolutely the BEST and my personal experience with mousekeeping was great.

The majority of guests staying in the Flagship resort don't want a coffee maker in their room as they do order room service or use the snack area at Gaspirilla's.

I do not say this to offend anyone, but sometimes moderate and value resorts offer what most want because that is what their clientele demands.

If the majority of guests staying at the deluxe resorts wanted a coffee maker in the room, Disney would listen.
