Just returned today 7/10/2004 from the 7-day Western which sailed on July 3rd. If you have any questions, please send them my way, and I'll do my best to answer them :)

Welcome back! We are leaving on the Western Cruise, 7/31/04. Couple of questions for you:

What did you do on Cozumel?

How hot was it? Humidity terrible?

Thanks so much.
Mandy

Cozumel was VERY VERY HOT and humid! We were actually docked there until 1:30 a.m. all aboard wasn't until 1:00 a.m. We were told that this was only the second time in 5 years DCL has done this. It was a "gift" of sorts for the crew. My DH and I didn't do an excursion in Cozumel. We shopped ( I know, my poor husband!..shopping in that unbearable heat!) But my mom and aunt and some friends ( a great couple who was seated at our table that we became friends with) rented a "jeep" and I use that term lightly(t was a volkswagen with the top cut off) did Chakanaab and had a great time snorkeling and driving around the island. The shopping was good, although I did not like the locals actually pulling you into their shops. They weren't just asking you in they would try ad grab you by the arm and get you in to their shop. They were trying ANYTHING get you in. They even offered us free shots of Tequilla if we went in. We only stayed off the ship until the afternoon because I had a spa appointment and my husband had a tour of the bridge scheduled. I can tell you that while my friends/family were "jeeping" it around the island, they passed the tour of horseback rider's who looked MISERABLE! they said it was soo hot and they could smell the horses (who looked very skinny) and they could see the flies ....I am SO glad that I didn't book that excursion! We actually thought about it. It's just too hot for that kind of stuff! Hope that helped you out! Have a great cruise :)

Hi

We're not on the Western till April 9, 2005 but I am wondering if you know at which ports the ship docks right in the harbour and which ones they tender. I'll have my Mother in law who is in a wheelchair and I am unsure if the tenders are able to accomodate a wheelchair. Do you have any information??

thanks

They dock at Key West, Cozumel, Castaway Cay. They use tenders in Grand Cayman. I'm not sure if they are accessible or not--seems to me they weren't unless the person could get out of the chair to get in and out of the tender, but I could be wrong.

I would ask the question and get responses from those who have been on the cruise with a person in a wheelchair.

Enjoy!

About the late stay. Most of the crew rarely get shore time because they're serving us or cleaning our rooms or cooking our meals, etc. Occasionally the ship stays late at a port as a reward for very high guest ratings. This gives the crew who normally don't get off the ship a chance to have some on shore recreation.

Were there many people in tuxes on formal night? How about kids? Thanks for any info!

Correct CM Mom! By the time the poor Servers/Assistants have finished their 18hr day, all they want to do is SLEEP! DD has only had 2 visits to late-night clubs in the last 4and half years! No days off either in 6 months.Besides, it's no fun getting to bed at 4.30 am and up for work at 5.30am for another long day. The only CM that benefit from these "late night" stays are the ones who only work very few hours a day. Naturally, they make up for it when they are on vacation! haha. Nat:Pinkbounc

There seem to be two tender sizes. Larger one with a capacity of 300 or so and smaller ones with 150 seating. Early on it seems the larger ones are used to get everyone off who have excursions planned. After the "rush" it seemed that it alternated with the smaler one

I believe the large tenders at Grand Cayman are wheelchair accessible based on what we observed as we tendered back. the smaller tender was docked and loading as a family with a wheelchair arrived. The CMs loading at first directed them to an upper loading path to wait. The gentleman in the wheelchair said he could walk onto the tender and they loaded using the "lower" entry walk.

Of course, checking with DCL directly is best, but I think you'll have no problem.

I am handicapped and use a power chair. I borrowed manual chair from Guest Services for Grand Cayman. The big tenders have very few stairs, I am able to transfer with assistance, 3 very strong very patient men made sure I was ok. I asked what would happen if unable to walk, they said seas permitting they would carry the occupant and chair onto the tender.

I would recommend calling guest services Grand Cayman morning to see which part of the ship (aft or forward) the large tender is using. Grand Cayman is pretty easy in a chair. The 2 story mall place even has a handicapped bathroom. Where Harley Davidson store is, on 2nd floor (use elevator).
