Just got back from our much anticipated ABD Southwest Splendors trip July 4-11 and wanted to report on our trip. I won't bother to give a detailed day-by-day report, as the previous reports pretty much spell it out and I don't want to be redundant...however, I thought I would give my thoughts on a few differences in our trip and what other may have experienced, and some things that were the same.

We had Geraldine and Maura as our guides, and we couldn't have picked 2 better suited to this itinerary and each other...fabulous girls, great sense of humor and a lot of fun...if you are lucky enough to get one or both of them as your guide, you will not be disappointed!

Our group was full - 40 people..20 of which were "kids"...however, most of these were teenagers...sounds like a nightmare right?...wrong!! this was the nicest group of kids that you could want to spend a week with...not one was obnoxious or loud when they should be quiet...in fact a lot of the families commented on how well mannered and behaved all of the kids were. I had been slightly worried about this issued before we left, but my fears were not realized.

I guess my point is this - every group WILL be different, depending on the make-up of the group...you really have no way of knowing ahead of time (unless you book an adults only tour) so it's best to go with an open mind and see what you get....it may be surprisingly pleasant. Our guides did mention their previous tour (which I believe was the one Kristilew was on) and that there were A LOT of younger kids on that tour and it was very "busy". They also said it was unusual to have such a high number of teenagers, all but 1 of which were boys...it worked out great for us since our son is 15.

With regards to the group, "bonding", I have kind of mixed feelings about this. I don't think anyone in our group, kids or adults, really bonded until at least mid-trip...most of the kids just kind of stuck with their own families, but all seemed perfectly happy to do so. It wasn't until our full day of travel, in which we played several games on the bus, that everyone kind of loosened up more and the kids started to hang around with each other. We had tried to make an effort to speak to and introduce ourselves to the other families, but I felt that more effort on ABD's part, especially on the first day, to loosen everyone up would have been helpful...after leaving the airport for Sedona, would have been a perfect time on the bus, to have some sort of group ice-breaker...also at the welcome dinner, some kind of group activity for the kids would have gone a long way to getting them more comfortable with each other. We did not have any bus issues...everyone changed seats on a regular basis, depending on who boarded the bus first and which seats they chose at the time...this was nice, as everyone got to experience sitting in the front, back and middle. My advice is this...to prevent people sitting in the same seats, and therefore risking always being in one particular location, just make sure that you board towards the front of the group, and pick a new seat each day...then the others will most likely follow. We did stay in the same seats for each "outing" and then switched it up the next day.

The food - having previously travelled on the ABD to Peru, last October, we had expected the level of food offered would be of equal quality. After reading Kristilew's trip report of this itinerary, and knowing that she had also done the Peru trip, I was sufficiently "warned" that the food would not be at the same level. Knowing this ahead of time definitely was helpful, and I think because of that, we didn't experience the same feelings that her family did. There is a lot of very tasty food offered on this trip, and you will not go hungry for sure...there were just not any "special" food memories like we had in Peru...could this be due to the locale?...absolutely...but if you go into it knowing it will not be gourmet you will not be disappointed. One thing....I found it odd that at the ABD provided dinners, there was virtually no food that the younger Junior Adventurer's would want to eat...what little kid wants to chow down on a Rib-eye?...I think some chicken fingers or burgers would have been great. Just my thought though.

Accommodations - We thought the Amara in Sedona was a lovely hotel...nice location (despite the hill) and the rooms were clean and comfortable and modern. We were slightly worried when we saw our room location next to the ice machine, but it turned out to be very quiet. The Red Cliffs Lodge in Moab, Utah was in a truly gorgeous location, had lots of interesting things to see and do and we wouldn't hesitate to return there again...the rooms were "rustic modern", clean and spacious. And now...The Thunderbird Lodge...I am really struggling as to what to write about this. I don't want to scare anyone going on a future Southwest Splendors ABD, so I'm trying to word it just right. I was expecting "basic"...that is very accurate. I was expecting "not modern"...that is an understatement. I was expecting "no amenities"...this is very, very true. I can live with all of these things as long as the room is clean...in our case, we had some major cleanliness issues, and so our opinion of the Thunderbird Lodge is not a good one. However, everyone else in our group, although feeling the Thunderbird was shockingly un-Disney, did not experience any issues similar to ours, so I am sure that you will most likely not have an experience like ours. I will not be specific, but after the issues were mentioned the next morning, an attempt was made to rectify the situation(s)...too late...our time at the Grand Canyon was definitely marred by the accommodations...we did not feel we really had a comfortable place to "hang out" there...and there is quite a bit of on your own time the afternoon there, and due to the fact that the Thunderbird does not even own a lawn chair, we couldn't even sit outside to escape the room. We ended up next door, on the porch at El Tovar, overlooking the canyon, pretending that was where we were staying, lol.
Many times we heard, "the hotel is not great...but oh, the view!!" ...I say rubbish!!...why shouldn't we expect to have a decent hotel AND a great view?...with the standards we have come to expect from Disney, and ABD, the Thunderbird Lodge is just plain unacceptable IMHO...this is the type of hotel, that if it were not on the rim of the Grand Canyon, would be charging by "the hour"! I apologize to anyone who is now afraid of staying here....I sincerely hope that you do not have an experience anywhere near ours...I hope that you are sufficiently prepared for this non-hotel experience...I am so glad I knew ahead of time what the general idea of this place was.

Activities - we thought the planned ABD activities were great, the step-on guides in each location were fabulous...really entertaining, and knew everything about the locations. The activities were well suited to all members of the group, regardless of age...ABD did a good job planning these things. We chose to do the ATV tour in Moab, Utah as an optional activity. It was pricey, but oh-so-worth it! If you choose to do just one optional, I highly recommend this ATV tour...even it you've done the ATV-thing before, you will not have ever seen scenery like this in your life...absolutely stunning, and very different from what you will have already seen on the tour. It was truly the highlight of our trip, and well worth every penny we spent!!!

Overall, I would say this is a wonderful itinerary, a great way to see the Southwest if you've never experienced it before. This is also a great "starter" group trip if you haven't experienced group travel before. We had a really nice vacation, with absolutely no having to worry about any of the details. Hoping desperately that ABD listens to the feedback on the Thunderbird Lodge, and makes changes, as this would then be a "perfect" trip. We are true fans of ABD and will definitely be booking another... waiting for the August itineraries to come out for next year. If you have already booked this and have an upcoming trip...don't worry, you will enjoy it and have fun!

If you have any specific questions, I will definitely do my best to answer them.

KJD - so glad you had fun! It sounds like you had similar impressions as we did - over all a great trip with a few "starred" items.

I'm so happy that the teenagers on your trip were great. The ones on ours were as welll, as were the ones last year. I think families that travel together end up growing fabulous teenagers - and I'm hoping that will be true for us as well, in a year and a half when I have one!

So sorry about the Thundercrap! I had hoped by warning you about the sheets that you would have a marginally better experience than we did. At least our room was clean-ish, even if we weren't due to no shower. Yuck! And I agree with everything you said about the situation.

I also think you hit the nail on the head about the "bonding." Good description and advice.

Did you have Stephen on the ATV tour, or another guide? And did you do the Onion Creek trail? That was my favorite thing, I think, too.

Welcome home - I'll be interested to see what else you end up having to say about the trip, and your thoughts for next year.

kjd469, I'm glad you had a good time on the trip! Will we be seeing any pictures???

The whole Grand Canyon hotel issue is so hard. Really, the only "nice" option is the El Tovar, but the El Tovar won't work with Disney, so that's out (but I'm glad you went & sat on their porch! It's wonderful, isn't it?) I thought the Grand Hotel in Tusayan was just fine (not great, but fine) and it was the best hotel in town (not much to choose from). So Disney is kind of caught between a rock & a hard place. People were disappointed in the Grand Hotel because besides being only "fine" it was not in the park. So I guess they decided that "in the park" was better than "fine"? I tend to think not, based on what I'm hearing about the Thunderbird. I agree, we *should* be able to get both a view and a nice hotel, but the option just doesn't exist (and, actually, there are *worse* accomodations on the Rim than the Thunderbird!!!) Kind of a no-win situation...

But I'm glad things were good or at least manageable beyond that. That's really interesting about the makeup of the "kid" portion of your group. I don't remember reading of another trip with that kind of distribution of ages...

I have stayed at the El Tovar and the furnishing are similiar to the Thunderbird. I just wanted to add that the El Tovar can't accommodate families well. They have approximately 70 rooms and very few rooms that have more than one bed. They also don't have very many rooms that are connecting. Unfortunately, the majority of their rooms cannot accommodate more than two people.

No trip that sells itself as a high quality, high price "vacation of a lifetime" should use such sub-standard hotels. It really isn't acceptable.

What did your Disney guides do to help you out with the hotel room problem? Do you have any suggestions for how to go about getting your issues fixed, if it happens on our trip? Do you mind telling me what the particular issues were (bedbugs?)

I actually find it surprising that ABD didn't offer kid options at meals - on the Viva tour, at every restaurant they took us to, there was a separate kids' meal, and each kid could decide whether they wanted the adult or the kid option. At the winery where we had a pasta feast, they even made a separate totally plain pasta dish (fresh and lovely) for several guests (a kid and an adult that didn't want the pasta dishes with sauce).

kristilew, we did have stephen on the ATV's...isn't he just the nicest (cutest) young man!

sayhello - i'm not very computer savvy, so I'm afraid our pics won't be posted :-(

battenburg - thanks for your insight into El Tovar - it's helpful to know "the big picture" ...while it may not be an option, as far as families go, I personally would forgo the "view" for a decent hotel further away...I just won't compromise my family's health just to see the view.

glassslipper - no, our issue was not bedbugs...it was a previous guest who felt the need to wipe their various bodily wastes and fluids all around the bathroom...how a room cleaner could miss all of it is beyond us... luckily, I had packed a lot of antibacterial wipes, and my poor husband was assigned the task of cleaning, as I was in a catatonic state at that point. Also, my son's bed sheets had multiple large stains, and he would not sleep inside his covers. When these issues were mentioned to Maura the next morning, she seemed shocked...later that afternoon, 2 cleaners came to our room to ensure that the sheets had been changed, etc...and a fruit basket was sent to us with a note from the hotel thanking us for staying there...I'm thinking Maura had a lot to do with that. This was probably too much information for some people, but it unfortunately is the truth.

toribelle - for our family of 3, ATVs were $395, then we tipped $50 on top of that.

KJD - Yes, I had a little crush on Stephen - so cute!

Can I ask how much the ATVs in Moab are?

I'm not sure what the breakdown was, but for 2 drivers and 1 passenger it came to $395.81...I know that sounds like a lot, and it is, but really, really, worth it...definitely worth budgeting for if you can.

hehehe, kristilew!! Nice pic! BTW, we did our ATVíng in Onion Creek as well...words cannot describe!

Thank you, there is just the 2 of us and I'll probably be on the back of my Husband's ATV. I was budgeting $350.00 so this sounds like it's a go. I can not wait.

About the Thunderbird, are there double beds or queens in the room. I read some reviews outside of DIS and it sounds like no one is sure. I am really thinking of brining my own sheets. I have been to little holes in the wall motels for NASCAR races where you sleep on top of the sheets and in your clothes and that's no fun. I picked up a small blanket at WALMART for college kids that I will bring but I think I'll bring some cheap sheets and leave them behind when we are done.

toribelle...if you are worried about driving the ATV yourself, it is really easy, since they are automatic...my husband and son thought it was quite funny to see me racing past them in my helmet and goggles! If you had budgeted $350 you will definitely be a go!! You won't regret it!

I know that Kristilew said that her beds at the Thunderbird were double, however, I guess we got the "deluxe room", LOL!!....ours were queen! So, it may be difficult to know which you will get...I'd bring the queen, and then they will fit for sure.

Oh, no! Did you lug a double fitted sheet with you and then not be able to use it? I'm sooo sorry! Our beds were definitely doubles - we sleep on a queen at home and these weren't it.

toribelle - glassslipper is looking into the silk sleep sacs. ya'll should pm and coordinate to split the cost, then pass the bags to each other

And I was thinking I wouldn't drive an ATV either, then DD decided she wanted to ride with me, so I ended up driving the big one. It was easy and way fun. I know I heard myself cackle in glee a few times as I revved it up a hill or down through a stream. Try it, you'll love it!

Now I'd pay good money to see a video of that!!!!

yikes....just read a report on CNN.com about a man who drove his car off the rim right in front of the Thunderbird Lodge yesterday!! Sure glad that didn't happen last week when we were there! How sad for him and his family that he would do that.

OMG, that's *awful*! That's sad for him and his family, but also for other people who were there, just enjoying themselves, and had to observe that! Very, very sad!

Can anyone tell me about the Grand Junction Airport. Our flight is not until 330p and I am worried about food. My Husband is Hyperglycemic and needs to eat every few hours or he starts not feeling too well. Any places to eat here or is it just a newstand? I will be packing munchies but just wondering about a good size meal. We connect in Dallas with about a 45minute connection time so we may not have time to grab anything there but we will try....I can just see us running through the airport, good thing I know DFW pretty well....hee hee

You have good reason to worry! There is virtually nothing in the Grand Junction Airport. It is a *very* small airport. I'm diabetic, and was having a very rough time with no lunch. My flight left at 1:30pm, and I didn't eat until I landed in Dallas at around 4-something. There is a pop machine outside security, and a newsstand with candy & pop beyond security. And a "Coffee Shop" that is really just a room where they serve coffee... until 8am!

I would HIGHLY suggest you pack stuff for your Hubby to eat, and, if possible, see if the Red Cliffs Lodge will pack up something for you from breakfast. I'd bet they would if you explain. I wish I'd known this about Grand Junction before I left.
