My kids had a odd day off of school so we took a long weekend trip last weekend (OCT 19-22). We arrived about 1:30 on Friday and spent the afternoon at Aquatica. My son is 41.75 inches tall and easily makes 42 inches in shoes, however he was not allowed to measure in is water shoes so he missed it yet again. We had a nice afternoon and we were able to find one slide on the climber that DS could do. That was enough to make him happy.

We stayed at the Residence Inn Sea World. It was fine, but not what we have come to expect from the RI. Had to pay for toothpaste and dishsoap (which at less touristy places is free)

Saturday we drove to BG. We got there right at 9am and had the place to ourselves until about 12. Kids played in seseme place for about 3 hours. We had a nice day would put the crowd level at about 6 out of 10. Left the park @ 4. Kids slept in the car and then were able to swim in the hotel pool after dinner.

On Sunday, we went to SW. Again arrived at 9am, we went over to see Turtle trek and saw Blue Horizon. At 10:30 we had Happy Harbor to ourselves. By noon, that changed. We saw the 12:30 "one ocean" and then walked through the Holloween stuff. Kids had fun collecting candy and the lines moved fast enough. At 1:30 we walked though the sharks and it took about 35 minutes because there were soooooo many people. The afternoon was crowded by sea world standards. I'd say 7.5-8 out of 10.

At 5:00 we headed over to do dine with shamu. I have done other "busch" meals and this was not the best one. Check in did not start until 5:20 so we were not seated until 5:40. Since everyone arrives at the same time the line for food was long and took about 12 minutes to get through. It is also in a closed room away from the table. I was luck that our table was close to the food. It is a long narrow room and had we been at the far end, managing my 3 and 6 year old alone would have been nearly impossible. The food was adverage to poor. One of my kids ate mac and cheese and one ate hotdogs. The salads were good but the other meat options were not good at all. The pool is on the other side of suspended glass. The whale that was nearest us was feeling frisky and with one swipe of her tail, we were drenched and chocolate cake with salt water isn't real tasty.

My overall impression is that there is NO way the expience was worth a dime more than the $30 with a kids free and honestly it was a lot of work for me. Maybe if DH had been along it would have been better. We would not do it again. One thought is that if you have the option, it might be better at lunch because everyone would less tired and cranky and less hungry too. After a long day, the waiting and then getting soaked was a little harder to "roll" with than it might have been earlier in the day.

After our long SW day, the kids slept in the car and I drove us the 6 hours home. We had a nice weekend and I'm now considering a simular trip to see the christmas decorations the first week in December.

I have to disagree and say that Dine with Shamu was one of the highlights of our (currently 14 days long) trip. Agreed the food isn't too amazing, however as the guests are checked in in a staggered way not everyone was fighting at the buffet at the same time. The 'up close and personal' feel to the whales and the talks and exhibitions the trainers did was informative and fun, as well as fascinating. The free group pictures were also really nice. I thought $120 for a group of 5 (one free child) was great value, a superb ending to a great day, and an experience I would certainly highly recommend to anyone I knew going to Seaworld. Maybe you were unlucky just to have a unruly orca splash you :-(

We did Dine with Shamu this past Saturday. If we had paid full price I would have been highly disappointed. The food was not great but we did not have issues with lines. For some reason I thought we would have been able to see the One show going on but you could not see anything until the separate "show" the whales/trainers did for us after dinner. Although fun and informative, I was disappointed we did not get to ask questions of the trainers. I also enjoyed the photo we received, but also for some reason thought it would be with a whale or have a whale in the background. Our waitress was wonderful and, for the price paid with the kids being free and adults at reduced price, it was a good value. But I would never recommend at full price.

Great to read the reviews of recent Dine with Shamu experiences :thumbsup2 . We have reservations for Christmas week and are starting to get very excited.

Can someone tell me about the family photo they take? What size is it? And where is it taken? (what's in the background?)

We were originally not planning to go to SW. But since we bought the DC tickets which came with SW. We are now going. The family is split between Shark Underwater Grill or Dine with Shamu. Now looking at this review, I, who originally was voting for DWS is now swaying towards Shark Underwater Grill....hmmmmm. Maybe we should just wait till we get there and see what we can get that day...haha...leave it to chance! :confused3

SeaWorld is an awesome park. I am sure your family will have a great time there!!

While the OP's visit might not have lived up to her expectations, others have great things to say about Dine with Shamu. Here's a recent article that gives some great deal on the food aspect of the dining experience:

Deciding between Sharks Underwater Grill and Dine with Shamu will be tough....both look like great places and offer totally different experiences! Have fun deciding! :goodvibes

The photo is a 5x7 I believe with a border around it. It comes in a folder. I thought they would superimpose a whale in there too so it looked pretty bare and dull, except my kids' smiles and them holding their stuffed whales. The reflection off the glass showed the people standing across so it was not the best pic.. But free.
We got there about 5:00 and my hubby volunteered to stand at the podium so we were first. They didn't start taking us back until almost 5:30. Tables are already reserved so we were at #19 which was rig in the middle by the glass. Good but most of the action took place on either end and we didn't get any good pics. Good thing cause my battery died.
We would go again at the current price but not more.
At Christmas we plan to do the Fireside dinner. The Polar Express exhibit is stellar and my kids LOVE it and beg to go back.

Thanks for the information on the picture! :thumbsup2

We, too, have reservations for Santa's Fireside Feast at Christmas (dinner with Santa and Mrs. Claus on Christmas Eve....:dance3:....I am not ashamed to admit that I'm totally excited about that!! :rotfl:). Polar Express, Journey to Atlantis, and Turtle Trek are all new experiences for us this trip as well. PE had just closed (as had all holiday attractions in the park) when we arrived on Jan. 2 last year, Atlantis was closed for a refurb and TT is brand new in 2012. So pumped!

I didn't realize that there are special Christmas rides and shows in Seaworld. We plan to go on 12 Dec. I'm going to google the web for more info. Seaworld is getting to be more exciting then we thought :goodvibes

Thanks Gina!
I notice that there seems to be some night shows and dinners. I thought Seaworld closes at 6pm usually (that's what it says on the schedule in their website). Does it close later in Dec? I am thinking of the holiday dinner at Shark Underwater grill, the holiday Shamu show etc. or are these all done in the day too?

Hmmm....I am not sure. I know that the park is open late during Christmas week (that's when our visit is), with hours extended some night until 9 pm and other nights until 11. Depending on what part of December your vacation is scheduled for, I would guess weekends, in particular, may have later hours than normal.

KBF, who posts on this forum quite frequently, is a great resource for special event information at SeaWorld. Hopefully she will chime in and pass along her awesome knowledge to you and provide a better answer for your question than I can :goodvibes .

Seaworld will be open until 9 or 10:00pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting November 17th. Starting December 14th, Seaworld will close nightly at 9:00pm or later. Every other day, Seaworld will close at 6:00pm. Traditionally, Christmas shows and activities are only offered on those days with a park closing of 9:00pm or later. However, no matter when you go between November 17th and New Years eve, you will still get to see all the Christmas decorations and a special Christmas themed ride called "Polar Express Experience" which is a motion simulator set to scenes from the popular movie. However, unfortunately you won't get to see the Christmas themed shows. All the Christmas themed shows are performed at night with regular day shows obviously performed during the day. Any way you could move your schedule so you visit Seaworld a few days later than originally planned so you can experience the Christmas celebration?

Thanks KBF! I'll see if we can rearrange our days. But if we can't we can still do Polar Express, and that'll still be good :)

Our DWS pic was taken with the lake in the background which already has undecorated Christmas trees in it before Halloween. The pic is fine but the background could be better.

It would definitely be weird to have Christmas trees in the background of a photo taken during a Halloween trip :crazy2:. That said, it would be the PERFECT backdrop for the time of year we will be doing Dine with Shamu.....our date is December 27th!

They had us sit on the wall and our background is just bushes. We were there Oct 18th

There was no staggered check in. Everyone was there early, but no one came out until 5:20 and then people just swarmed the podium. The line at the buffet was really long and the kids got jostled around by adults trying to hurry and get food. I have allergies and a "special plate" was brought to me and it was overcooked.

However, my family said the buffet food was decent and there was plenty of it. There were a lot of choices.

We also got splashed my an orca, (those cracks in the panels are just wide enough.......) but our waitress saw and replaced DS's dessert plate for him so he wouldn't miss the presentation.

We came out with mixed reviews. With using the Kids Free promotion, I'm not going to complain because we got our money's worth. Had I paid full price, I think I would have been a little more disappointed. The presentation seemed a little short for us, but it was very informative. My food wasn't the greatest. They encourage people to stand at the glass, and the people behind us sent 4 kids to press their faces against the glass so that my kids could barely see since there was a beam on the other side of them. It would be nicer if they had tiered the seating or something.

We did it, we liked it, not our favorite meal of the trip and I'm not sure we'd repeat it, but it was a nice ending to our Seaworld day.
