We are back from Fort Wilderness and had a good vacation besides lots of bad luck. As some of you know, the transmission when out in DH's truck three weeks before we were to leave gobbling up most of our spending money. Well our first day at Fort Wilderness my Husband fell off a stool while setting up the camper and twisted his ankle, we were afraid it was broke at first. However, the first three days of vacation he was in terrible pain, he was a trooper though he did not let on just how much pain he was in until we got home. Wednesday we were headed to AK for breakfast and our truck broke down, Disney had to tow it and reapair it, it was a bad batter cable. Then on the way home Sunday our truck broke down on the Fl turnpike. I guess luck was with us a litte bit because I called an Uncle who lives in FL and turns out he was only 15 miles from us, so we had to get a wrecker to tow the truck and my uncle towed our camper with his truck. Our truck and camper are still in Fl, a fuel pump went out and according to the mechanic it was caused by some of the work Disney did.

Fort Wilderness is a first rate campground all the way around. However, our family had decided that camping and Disney do not go together for us. We spend most of our time at the parks and very little time at the camper, we just used it to sleep, so it really does not seem worth the extra work to camp. Now if we went to Disney more often than every two or three years and did not want to spend most of our time at the parks, it would be a great place to camp. We also felt that the campground did not have the same disney magic the resorts have. We did have a good time except for our series of misfortunate events and we are glad we tried the campground for we have wanted to do so for several years now. We were in site 1437 which was really a great site it was right across the road from a comfort station and the campfire/movie area. It was also a quick walk to the pool and the trading post. I would definently want that area again if we did camp there. We actaully did fine without a golf cart being so close to everything, but I think we would have regreted not having one if we had been in a loop further away. We did find it a hassel having to take a bus to catch a bus or boat to get to the park, one night coming back from MK we had to wait 45 minutes for a yellow bus, it had rained we were all soaked and DD was worn out it was not a good experience. Actually it was a fairly short walk to the settlement bus stop from our campsite, but DH's foot was hurting him so I did not want to put any more extra walking on it that necessary. I will be posting my trip report on the trip report board, but if anyone has any specific questions I will be glad to answer them.

I am sorry to hear about your truck problems. We were down there for 2 weeks in Feb/March this year and had just arrived at Blizzard Beach at the start of our second week when the "check engine" light came on on our Honda minivan. I phoned the Disney repair place, but it sounded like they wanted a lot of money just to diagnose the problem. We got the number of the nearest Honda dealership and made an appointment for the next day. They really weren't that far away and even brought my DH back to FW while they made the repair. Then they came back to pick him up when the van was ready.

I'm really glad that we went with a dealer because I felt comfortable that they knew what they were doing. My DH said the place was great and the pricing was comparable to our Honda repair place at home.

I would agree with you that, if you are in the parks most of the time, it may not be worth the hassle of camping. For us, we spend all but 3 days of our 2 weeks at the campground ...

I look forward to reading your trip report and hope your DH is doing well.

I am very sorry your vacation was not as magical as you had wanted it to be.

I bet it felt good to get back home. Better time next time.

Oh sorry about all your truck problems and your poor husband leg!

We're so looking forward to our trip at the FW.

Sorry to hear about your husband standing on a stool and falling off. Maybe you should use a ladder next time or something safer. I don't see how a bad battery cable could have anything at all to do with a fuel pump going out but maybe it's time for a new truck?

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.
I have to agree with trlrboy about the repair. I really dont see how a battery cable repair can have anything to do with a fuel pump.
I dont think that one mechanic ripping on anothers work is really very professional.

Actually our truck has never given us any problems until the last few weeks. I would love a new truck but we already have a car payment and can not afford a new truck. DH has decided though that maybe pulling the camper is just too much on this truck and we are going to stick to camping closer to home until we can get a new truck. To update, this info about the truck was coming to us from the mechanic, to my uncle, to my grandmother, to us, what the mechanic said was that he had to go in and do some clean up work on what disney had done (they did not put a new battery cable in like my husband was thinking they were going to do, DH said they made a cable instead. But what Disney did, did not cause the fuel pump to go out.

Your trip sounds similar to ours last year. Our Ford Explorer died 4 hours from home on Saturday afternoon and we had to have car and camper (ouch!) towed to hotel in Savannah. Then we had to stay 2 nites at hotel, (2 rooms x 2 nites since we had 3 teen boys). Monday am,had to call wrecker to take car to Ford Dealership, who fortunately was able to fix - some sort of a wire had broken causing the car to cut off. Arrived Monday night in the rain. Tuesday, DH did not feel very well, but we still went to parks for about 4 hrs. Tuesday night no better. Wednesday am, called the outpatient clinic, who came and picked him up. We were afraid of gall bladder attack. Fortunately, it was a viril (sp?) infection. He was much better by Thursday and we came home Saturday.
