We've always been big fans of staying onsite, but this trip we had extended family along for the ride so it only made sense to rent a house offsite. We chose a 5-bedroom house in Windsor Palms. Here's what we thought:

PROS:

LOVED the location. We honestly got to the parks just as quick (if not quicker) then if we'd been onsite riding the buses. We could get onto Disney property in under 10 minutes without having to go onto any major highways (I detest I-4). I'm sure it would take longer during peak season, but off season the drive time was nothing.

Loved being able to eat breakfast and dinners at the house. We had one great meal a day (including places like Le Cellier, Biergarten, Kona Cafe, and Boma) but still spent well under $100/day for the 4 of us. Haven't done the exact math, but we were able to splurge when we went out without feeling guilty. Also helped with my weight mgmt--last trip I gained 7 pounds in a week, this trip I lost 1 :cool1:

Loved being able to put the kids to sleep in their own bedroom vs. trying to get them down while we're all in the same room, then having to be quiet the rest of the night. The privacy was great, and 8 people had plenty of room.

Liked the amenities (large screen TV, great master bath, washer/dryer) that you don't normally get with a hotel room.

Price! The cost of the house was split 4 ways and ended up being under $350/wk for each family.

CONS:

We paid extra for the pool and hot tub to be heated, but they never got truly warm. We had the mgmt co. come out and everything was in working order. Apparently the hot tub only gets about 10 degrees above air temp. (and that's what heats the pool) and it just wasn't warm enough this time of year. Just something to think about if you're planning a trip during cold months. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't have paid for the warming and just done without. As it was, they were unusable half the week anyway.

This wasn't a dealbreaker, but sometimes being in the house reminded me a little too much of being at home in that we had to keep the kitchen clean, do some laundry, sweep, etc. I really like escaping all that stuff when we're on vacation. I think that's where I lost a little of the magic that being onsite provides!

Overall, it was a great experience and I'd definitely stay offsite again in the future (especially during these years where my kids are small and our budget is tight). Hope this helps someone else who's debating between on/offsite!

Thanks for posting this!

We're staying at the Vistana Resort in May - and I have a post going about tips. Your post is a great encouragement!!!! :cool1:

Did the pool/hot tub have a pool cover? If so, did you use it? We rented a home over XMAS when it was also cold, and the pool/spa wasn't warm enough to use the first several days, but then we found the pool cover in the garage and started using it, and it heated up quite nicely. The pool cover looked like a big sheet of blue bubble wrap cut to fit the pool & spa. From what I understand, without the pool cover, the pools just lose too much heat at night when it's cold and the heater just can't compensate.

There was no pool cover when we got there. The mgmt co. brought one out when they came and it did help, but the pool still never got warm (and the hot tub never got hot).

You don't say exactly when you were there but if it was during Jan then at times the temperature dropped way below the norm and no pool heater can work hard enough to heat the water especially without a cover .I was in my home between Jan 6-20 and even with the cover there were time the water just didn't seem warm enough as the air temperature was so low .Having said that if you go again at the same time of year I would still go for pool heat as without it there is no way I would swim -lets hope this seasons temperatures won't be repeated too often,

It was last week, and the highs were in the mid to upper 70's most of the week (our last day it was in the 50's, and of course we didn't try to swim then). The weather was about as good as we could hope for in February. We were just disappointed because we expected that when we paid over $100 extra for a week's worth of heating that we'd have a nicely warmed pool (and we certainly expected the hot tub to be hot).

well given that it sounds as if they might have a problem with the heater maybe as my guests haven't complained my heater isn't working as it should. I too would be disappointed if I had paid for heating and it wasn't up to much and the air temperatures were good.

We too paid for pool heat and spa heat and it was wonderful, hot steamy and everything. We were there (Windsor Palms) Dec. 03 til Jan 04 and just this past Oct. with temps. similar to what you described. I think there was something wrong even if they said there was not and I would fight it for sure! When we went in Dec. temps got down to the 40's overnight and the pool heated up quickly and effciently and we all had a ball. BTW the drive is not that much different at busier times, yahoo!

Hi..to be honest it just sounds like the pool heat was not set high enough...we are renting a home for 3 months and the temp is set at 89 and it has been lovely the whole time...We use the cover every night and it has worked well...Pool heat is expensive and if the owner or manager sets the temp at a lower temp it saves $$$ but the pool stays cool...It sounds picky but next time ask if the pool heat is set at 87+ and tell them the problems you have had in the past...

Take care...Ted

I have the same feelings as you. A few years back we also rented in Windsor Palms, location was great, house was nice, but it was just a little too "homey" for us too. I like the resort feel with space. So we rented points for Old Key West and that works well for us.

If we are really tight and can't afford our choice of accomodations, I would not rent a house again, rather I would wait until I could.

Personally, we're just the opposite. I hate being in a hotel and having a maid come in every day and clean. I don't want some stranger coming into my room. I don't want the bed made and the covers tucked in just so I have to pull them all out again. I just want to check in, spread my stuff out and leave things that way until I leave. And we love being able to do laundry. We are able to pack less that way.

Of course, there was no rule saying you had to do laundry. And in all the times we've rented houses, condos, timeshares, I don't think we've ever swept. The place just doesn't get that dirty in a week.

Glad you had a good trip. We loved Windsor Palms and I'm sure we'll stay there again in the future.

Thanks to the OP and to everyone fo rthis thread. there are far too few trip reports specifically about staying in a pool home. I am always worried it is because people who stay in pool homes are just not that excited about their trip when they return!

We are checking into Emerald Island for a week in 7 days, but then staying at WL for three nights. I am hoping having both experiences will be just right. But it is our first offsite stay, too, so who knows!

The spa heat thing is not all that unusual from what I have gathered. Many of the spas are connected ot the pool and use the same heater. It is just not the same as a freestanding spa.

I'm with disneysteve on this one. Our most enjoyable Florida trip was when we stay in a pool home at Windsor Palms. Everyone had a great time. Lots of space (two-king suites, queen and two twin beds) and the pool/hot tub were big hits with the kids. We definitely will be staying there again

I just booked our 6 bedroom house for our stay 05/27-06/05/05. There will be 14 of us. I also got a $265.00 discount with the magicard! :Pinkbounc  :cheer2:

The reason we had to do some cleaning is that we have a VERY messy toddler and preschooler. I can hardly go a day without having to sweep  . As for the laundry, there wasn't enough towels not to wash them mid-week (even though we shared and used them multiple days). At the stage of life we're in, I have to do so much housework and laundry that I like to escape it and feel a little pampered when we're on vacation (I'm sure other moms can relate). However, like I said it's not a dealbreaker for staying offsite for us, just an observation. As a matter of fact, we're going back early next year (squeezing in one more trip before my youngest turns 3) and I've already been checking out skyauction. I'm leaning towards Silver Lake, since it's even closer to Disney then WP. Looks like we could get it pretty cheaply. Since we have 5 days left on our tickets, I think we can do this trip for around $1,000 pretty easily (we drive down). Heck, we couldn't go to a beach for that. I'm thrilled that we liked staying offsite enough to do it again--it means we can go to Disney more often!

Yep, I forgot about towels. You do need to do at least a load or two of towels during the week.
