Just back from BC - disappointing

Just thought I'd take a minute to post about our experience since I found the info here to be so helpful when trying to decide where to stay.

We just got back from a week at the BC. Sadly, I can't say that we were all that impressed or even that we would stay there again. It wasn't that we had a truly *bad* experience, it's just that we did not have a *magical* :wizard: experience. I felt like we could have been at any nice hotel, anywhere. I don't have a lot of other Disney resorts to compare it to, but as a family, we decided that we would all much prefer to go back to AKL the next time, or spend just a little more, and stay at the Poly.

I wonder if part of the problem is that I grew up going to the beach on the East Coast, lived in New England for several years, and so the theming just didn't seem "exotic" to me. Maybe if I were from say, TX, it would have seemed more exciting??

The pool was huge and pretty neat, but the slide was a disappointment to the kids. We've been at other hotels with better slides, including AKL. Still, the sand in the pool was unique, and the kids particularly loved the sinking sands section. Finding a chair could be a challenge at times, b/c although nobody is supposed to reserve chairs, people do. It was frustrating to see so many chairs without anyone using them, yet have nowhere to sit down!

Mousekeeping was not great, and that is probably my only valid complaint. There was a hair on the lower wall of the shower when we arrived, and it stayed there all week, making me think that the room was definitely not being cleaned thoroughly. (Never fear, I was OCD enough to have brought along my own Clorox wipes though!) We are fairly neat guests, but we tipped generously each day and didn't receive a towel animal in return even once. :confused3

One day, through no fault of her own (she had only gone "#1" - sorry to be graphic!), DD flushed the toilet, and it began to overflow. DH managed to get the water turned off, but not before the bathroom was totally flooded and seeping onto the rug. We immediately called housekeeping and engineering and were assured that someone would be up quickly. We had ADRs that evening, and were just about to begin showering, etc, so being able to use the bathroom was pretty important! After 30min, DH went to the front desk and told them about the problem and they were very concerned and promised that someone would be right there. About 30min. later, a guy from engineering arrived and was dismayed to find out that nobody from housekeeping had showed up yet. He immediately called for housekeeping on his radio. He had whatever the problem was, fixed in about 2min. and assured me that housekeeping would be there ASAP. (Remember, water is seeping onto the rug!!):rolleyes1

After another 10min, and a call to the front desk, housekeeping showed up - with a crib! What?? THe CMs seemed to speak no english and seemingly had no idea how to go about cleaning up the water. As I was talking to them, another housekeeper (Supervisor?) happened to walk by and I explained the situation to her. She got things moving at least. However, all that happened was that they got a mop and towels and soaked up the water in the bathroom. No cleaning of the floor, no sucking water out of the rug in front of the vanity, nothing. We were fairly disgusted to to walk on the floor in the bathroom area for the rest of the trip. No apologies were ever given, although perhaps that is our own fault for not making our unhappiness with the whole situation better known to management.

THe other odd thing was that the hairdryer there kept shutting off. Fortunately, I had brought one from home, b/c every time my daughter tried to use the BC dryer for more than a minute or two, it would shut off, although it did not trigger the "reset" button. And one day, when she was attempting to dry her hair w/ the BC dryer, DH had a battery recharger in the same outlet and it essentially got "fried", although once again, the circuit there never went off. Kind of scary, really.

Meeting Art the greeter was wonderful - he is such a gentleman.

Counter service options are limited to the Marketplace there, and I will say that the food we had was good, but not much of a selection.

Transportation from the BC was okay. It didn't seem nearly as bad as what I read about here. It was great to walk to Epcot, but frustrating to take the boat to MGM. MGM seemed just a bit too far to walk, yet the boat took forever, and it had to stop at the Swan/Dolphin as well. Boat drivers (captains??) were mostly great, joking and chatting. Busdrivers were not all that friendly and mostly seemed annoyed to have to drive anyone anywhere! Definitely not up to Disney standards for CMs!

Anyhow, that's just a quick summary. If you have any questions about the resort, please feel free to ask.

sorry to hear that you had such a time! I grew up in Mass on the Beach and have stayed at the YC & BC so many times. Now I never even once thought it was like our beaches around here at all! As for what happened at the resort, I can safely say I have had stuff like that at every deluxe I have stayed at on-site....It happens, why? not a clue! I think if you did not have all that going on there, you would have enjoyed our stay more...

sometimes I think it is the luck of the draw! (and I always get the short end of the stick..)

*I agree about the food, need more options without ahving to go around the lake. (I do enjoy going to the Swan & dolphon thou...with the 24hr resturant)

You may be right. I saw another thread about which resort feels the most "magical" though and it was interesting to see the range of responses. I guess for it to feel magical to us, we just like the theming to be more "exotic" or something??:confused3

Yes! I replied in that thread about which resort feels the most magical and I said if magical means the Castle, Disney characters, MK, etc., then I'd choose CR for its proximity to MK. Then I went on to say our favorite resort is BC but we're not necessarily sure it's very Disney magical. We are from the western New York area and so the BC is lovely to us -- actually the entire Epcot resort area is perfect for us because it is like a vacation within a vacation because of all the things to do. Sorry you didn't totally enjoy your stay at BC. I know what it's like to pay all that money and then not feel completely satisified.

A very helpful report. The next time our toilet is stopped up, I'm going to give the crib a try. :rotfl:

I'm sorry, but ^this^ made me laugh out loud. :lmao:

Sorry to hear you didn't have a better time. We stayed at the YC in '04,
and were less than impressed. It's 'nice' and all, just didn't seem to be worth
the money to us... If we leaned over the balcony and looked to the far right we could see a glimpse of the lake... This was our 'water view'.

I did the BC last year for a couple of nights before moving to AKL. Never again. It was just a nice, expensive hotel. Loved the location and that's about it. Housekeeping didn't clean the room while I was there and I had to call them at 4pm (I was on the computer all afternoon) and ask if someone was coming to clean. Then they had the nerve to ask me if I wanted someone to make up the room. Told them that I was capable of making my beds but I would like clean towels. There was someone there within five minutes.

Crossed this one off my list... never again. AKL though was awesome! (And I am a huge fan of Coronado and Pop).

I felt the same way as you.

I just didn't like it that much. Part of it may be used to staying close to the MK since I have young children.

I was not impressed with the bus/boat service especially for a deluxe. With the boat you go to 3 other resorts before getting to MGM.

And I agree about the Marketplace, the food was good, but not enough of a selection.

It wasn't that it was a "bad" trip or that I hated the resort. I just felt like there are other places that I personally like better.

We felt the same way after our trip. Also, there must be a problem with the bathrooms overflowing because our carpet near the bathroom was wet when we checked in. After putting a towel down, let's just say the towel didn't stay entirely white where the water was absorbed into it. Gross - especially at $300+ a night.

We are big time walkers, but the convoluted route through the BC to the YC or just to Stormalong bay got old pretty quickly. The rooms were just so-so after staying 3 nights previously at CR.

The Marketplace choices were far too limited (in our opinion) and getting to Hurricane Hanna's was too much work to bother with that as a different option.

We loved the pool and the pool waitresses - that part was great. Overall though, we are glad we tried it once and only for a short visit. We will not be staying at the Beach Club again. We had such high hopes and were letdown. On the other hand, we had no expectations of the CR and it turned out to be FABULOUS!

Here's hoping you have better luck next time.

sorry about the issues you had
I stayed at the BC last year and w loved it and we are from MA
I do agree with you about the counter service in that area

Sorry you did not enjoy your stay at BC. I do, however, have to question one very minor complaint you made: that the slide at AKL is better than the one at SAB? No way! The SAB slide is much taller, longer and faster than the AKL slide. If that is not a better slide, what is?

Interesting! I had the same feeling about POR, largely because I grew up in The South and I found the landscaping, etc. to be lush, but not impressive--too close to what I was used to.

I'm sorry you were disappointed in BC. I have stayed there twice and enjoyed it, but agree that the themeing isn't anything "magical". AKL is my favorite and that type of immersion in a theme makes most other resorts pale in comparison. Having said that, I think the comment about the slides is WAY off. The slide at AKL is pretty lame (but still fun)...

Next time try the Poly. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Sorry to hear about your disappointing stay, but if it makes you feel any better, we didn't get towel animals at the Dolphin either. :flower3:

We had the same experience you did at the BC. DD and I spent 6 days here a couple years ago, and there was nothing wrong with the resort, we just didn't love it. That vacation was the only one where we felt a bit let down, and we spent the whole time wishing we'd reserved AKL. Maybe if you love AKL, it's hard to switch to a less exotic theme - I agree with johnsonet, you might give the Poly a try, or WL.

Your comment about the hair dryer struck a chord as well, as we had one like that at the GF last March. It would quit running, and you had to let it rest for a few minutes before you could try again. Very hard to dry your hair, when you only get a few seconds at a time!

Oh, and the thing with the bathroom? I would not have felt at all comfortable until I'd seen housekeeping actually cleaning that floor! Ewwww.

Hi there - sorry to hear your stay wasn't what you expected. I'm surprised. We've stayed at the BC 3 times and the YC once and all 4 times we had fantastic/100% perfect experiences. Everything was perfect from room cleanliness, friendly CM's, I can't think of one bad thing to say. Can't comment on transportation because we drive so our car is always available to take us where we want to go with no waiting. :rotfl2: Having a counter service eatery isn't that important to us so that doesn't bother me. And the pool - my gosh - you can't beat it. I personally love the theming and find it to be exceptionally magical. But, I'm from the South so it's definitely a different experience for us.

That's not what I needed to hear!:sad2: My big debate last fall was whether to book CR or BC and now you just confirmed that I would have like CR better! (I've been consoling myself by thinking that if we'd been at CR, then I would have wished I had chosen BC.....)

We left the friendly confines of the Poly one year to stay at the BC, and I would have to say we regretted it also. The hotel just didn't give us the feel of a grand hotel at all. Pool and slide were great, location was great. The bus line waits did seem to be way to long as compared to the Poly. However, after 10 trips to WDW, our overall experience at the parks was probably the worst we'd ever had, which added to the overall disappointment of the trip.

Now I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here b/c honestly this line seems potentially TERRIBLY insulting. Can you kindly clarify?

Given the price of the BC, one would certainly expect to NOT walk around in toilet water  In fact, I'd say that is the exact opposite of pixie dust.
