Just back from Aulani!

Very helpful. Thank you for the information!

Aunty's Beach House is AWESOME. Our daughter (age 5) loved it there. They have snack time (it was a cookie one time and fruit the other), and you can purchase a meal (lunch or dinner) for your child.

My son recently turned 7. We were there 8 days and stayed at the resort one full day and also our last travel day (left at 4 for the airport). The other days we were out sightseeing from around 7:30/8 to anywhere from 2 to 5 in the afternoon. He did great and had lots of fun. He was very interested in Pearl Harbor (really liked going on the USS Bowfin). North Shore beaches, swimming at the Waimea waterfall, hiking Diamond Head, and Wet N Wild were his favorites. Of course, we did have his DS along for the driving which helped.

:thumbsup2That is great to hear. My boys are 7 and 5, and had wondered about the USS Bowfin. I'll be hitting those other sites also, so I'm encouraged:goodvibes Than you VERY much for the feed back!

glad to hear that you had such a great time! Great off-resort food choices as well! :thumbsup2

Thank you for all the info. Hubby and I are going in April. Is the taco place and grocer close enough to walk to?

Yes, it's not far across the street. We walked over for dinner one night earlier this month.

The cabannas can be booked for half days... I forget the details exactly but it was something like 8-1 or 1-6... When we stayed there over a weekend back in October we rented a cabanna for the full day and specifically asked for Cabanna #1 which we got. It really is the best one there... Closest to the Ocean, the infinity jacuzzis and the pool.... If you have kids there are a couple of cabannas near the kids play area as well...

Would anyone know what cabanna #s are closer to the kids play area? I really love the idea of renting a cabana for our last day - as our flight doesn't leave until 7:00 pm. Seems like a great way to spend the time between check out and heading to the airport. I tried googling maps of Aulani to see if I could find anything on line, but could not.

gosh..we must have been there at the same time. We also saw Steve Harvey a number of days, along with his entourage, and they occupied cabana #1. The weather was perfect, wasn't it?

We had standard view studio for 3 nights, and then ocean view 1 bedroom 7 nights. Loved the room and the view....upper floor, and nice view of ocean; however, we were on the side where you could not see the sun set (we were right above kiddie pool/play area). We learned that ocean view does not mean "ocean front". We did do the DVC tour....only grand villas have the "ocean front" view. Next time we go, I will get a standard view one bedroom and save points. The noise from the pool was quite distracting when sitting on deck (not to mention the recording loop of hawaiin music....which was EVERYWHERE). However, once you slid the door closed, you could not hear a thing.

Our nightly thing was to fill our DVC resort refillable mugs (from WDW) with our adult beverage and watch the sun set from the beach.

We also utilized Just Tacos, the BBQ place and the ABC store (great salads!!). We somehow found Giovannia's shrimp truck while getting lost at the north shore (yummmm!). Also took the main hwy westbound, past the resort and passing the electrical plant) until you couldn't go any further....beautiful, and we saw some whales. We did the evening buffet at Disney...I thought it was a great value with lots of choices. And the outdoor Starlight Hui (?) was done really well.

Something that others there were not aware of. Next to the community hall (not aunty's cottage), there is a huge lounge for those (like us) that had a late flight home. There are two computers hooked to a printer so you can print out your boarding passes. There is also a large screen on the wall that has all the flight info from the airport (delays, departures, etc). There are also men and womans showers with lockers and hairdryers and towels.....liquid soap and shampoo and body wash mounted on the shower walls. It was perfect! A great idea...wish all the DVC resorts in WDW had something similar.

I read elsewhere that if you walk over to the Marriott, you can order better counter food at their poolside bar. The cheeseburger I got at Disney was un-remarkable and $15.

It is a beautiful resort. The beach is awesome. The two water slides are alot of fun. the big pool is kind of busy....but the quiet pool is just wonderful....and you can get a view of the ocean while in the pool in certain spots. We are also planning our next trip for two years from now.

Do you mean near Aunty's Beach House or the Menehune "splash" area? Cabanas 1-4 would be closest to Aunty's. There were 2 cabanas near the splash area but I don't know the numbers. You book it through the concierge and they will be able to tell you the numbers if you want to put in a request.

When you were there, did you happen to notice if they had a length-of-stay pass for watersports, such as kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkeling at RR? We're going at the end of the month andd I saw posted somewhere they they didn't have this anymore, which woud be a bummer.

They did have length of stay for Rainbow Reef. I believe an adult was $29 for one-time and $49 for length of stay. Don't think they had it for the beach stuff.

YvonneB...I specfically asked the cast members at the rental shack on the beach about the "length of stay" rental. It is no longer offered; the reason I was given: people hung onto the stuff all day long, so they then ran out of "stuff" to rent. Yes, you could do something for snorkel stuff for the rainbow reef, but not clear on weather you were able to "keep the stuff" in your room all week (in case you wanted to use it elsewhere). I had also been under the impression that lounge chairs were not provided for the beach. Not true, the cheap lounges were there. However, the sturdy wooden ones with some kind of a shade thing that came over it had to be rented. I only saw one or two rented the whole time we were there (mid Jan.). I was also told I wasn't allowed to buy my own little beach umbrella to use; they claimed that the shore patrol comes thru and makes you take it down.

I tried to snorkel in the cove, but the water was too murkey. I did see some people out by the rocks, but I didn't feel comfortable going out that far. I did have a vest, but being close to the rocks scared me; although there must be some kind of man-made barrier reef right before, because the waves that came into the cove were very clam.

I enjoyed watching the fish at rainbow reef from the glass viewing walls on one side. So pretty.

Oh....and the sting-ray hands on thing is now $49 for an adult, forget how much for kids.

Funny we must have just missed you guys. We were there Jan 6-15!

I agree about the cove for snorkeling and I bought the lenght of stay Rainbow Reef pass. They let me pick p snorkel gear at Makiki Joes on the beach and use it, then I would turn it back when done. I also could get it at Rainbow Reef. The snorkeling in the cove was not great, I saw maybe 15 fish and i had to dive near the rocks to do so. Rainbow Reef however is amazing, especially at feeding times, 9Am and 130pm. I highly suggest you try the day pass, and upgrade afterward to the length of stay.

I used to live on Oahu and knew the places to eat. Roys is a must, and the one in Hawaii Kai is amazing, its a 45 minute drive from Aulani but it is worth it. DO NOT FORGET to order the chocolate soufflé. Just tacos was good but not great. Ama Ama was decent but it wasn't amazing. We honestly spent most time by the pool and ordered poolside for lunch, Kid meals, had a shave ice or mickey ice cream bar and then went out for dinner in town. Since I lived there we didn't do much sightseeing, but we did go to Dole for a dole whip and along the north shore and windward coast. I would highly recommend the activities at the Pau Hana room for fun and free souvenirs. The Daily Iwa is your best resource.

One thing we learned on the last day was they do sunset photopass photos on the beach by Ama Ama, the photos we took turned out great!

Love all the info - thanks for sharing! We are going to check Aulani out while staying at the military base next month - we're DVC members. Do you know if we would be able to get a Rainbow Reef pass without being guests at the resort?

We are here now and also reserved an ocean view...there must be better ones because we see exactly what you see and hear: JW's tennis courts and hear the trucks backing up and unloading day and night...but the actual is beautiful...if you can get over the above!

We leave the 14th...sadly!

We are here at the EWA tower 16th floor looking east, island view. We had dinner at AMA AMA tonight and it was very good! Absoultely no complaints here. Everyone was very helpful and friendly and Food was great! There does need to be some more value priced quick service options in the resort.

Lot of good tips in this thread, and I am going to bookmark it for future reference. Thanks everyone.

Did any of you do a luau?

Wondering if the entertainment at the resort, such as the Starlit Hui, would do??

We went to the Paradise Cove Luau on Feb 14th.
It was nice but the food was just ok.

Very imformative.
