We just got home from our amazing cruise on the Wonder, and while I will never find the time for a real trip report, I figured I'd share a few things that were new/newish/different in case they help anyone planning for 2019.

Pre-cruise - stayed at Times Square Suites for 3 nights. I'd definitely stay there again. Our stay was a bit over $800 Canadian for a 1 bedroom plus a den (with a twin bed) and living room with sofa bed, so my kids had their own sleeping spaces. It had a full kitchen and laundry machines, which we used a bunch. The location is great, so easy to walk to many places, tons of dining, grocery stores, etc in the area. It was unseasonably warm, so I expected the lack of central AC to be an issue, but we had to turn down the window unit b/c we were freezing! No worries there.

Post-cruise - stayed one night at the Fairmont in the airport purely b/c we had an early morning flight. Well, it was worth it for the convenience, I guess. I can't believe I paid $400 for one night in a room with 2 queens compared to $800 for 3 nights at the Times Square for a large suite, but you pay for convenience. The restaurant was very good (albeit pricey) and the beds comfortable, but the hotel is old and needs some love. Paint is scratched up everywhere (door frames, furniture, you name it), the carpet is ripping apart even on the "deluxe" 13th floor, there are no solid doors in the bathroom area or bathroom fan (so, um, zero bathroom privacy), and our shower head actually fell off and broke. I'm sure the hotel was gorgeous like 10 years ago, but they don't appear to be updating it at all. And I'm not a picky person who goes looking for that. Kind of a head-scratcher, but I guess you can charge what you want when you're IN the airport.

Cruise itself:
-We had great service so I feel very badly for those who haven't had good service lately! Large family group from age 2 to 68, one adult with dietary needs; no issues. We upped our tips a good bit for our server Jojo b/c he was great. Club host was very entertaining, bar staff friendly as usual, really no complaints. Once again we were not burdened with numerous "excellent" speeches, just that one night at the end! Guess we have good luck in that regard.
-Still not thrilled with the show schedule, but it seems to be how DCL wants it now. We watched the solo acts in Azure, and it was fine, but with so much less space - it's hard to see how well that will work for the popular solo acts. They certainly love that "it's all about choices" bit, so get used to hearing that!
-We were on the Wonder shortly after the refurb and found Tiana's unbearably loud for dinner. Anyone who thought some of us were odd to complain about that - they have TOTALLY changed it. In the beginning, the band played nearly the entire dinner, even when you were ordering. Now, it's far more pleasant, with sporadic music instead. I have no idea when they stopped playing nearly constantly, but I'm glad they did! I wish I had known how different it would be in advance, b/c tbh, I was kind of dreading Tiana's beforehand.

Excursions: can't say this enough, book independently! Our private whale watching tour in Juneau was so worth the money, and pp was barely more than the larger boats full of people. And our ziplining tour in Skagway ended up being private, b/c our 5 person family group was it. Our excursion time was flanked by a couple of 20-person cruise groups. We got stuck behind the one, so we got to re-run a section of 3 ziplines until they were out of the way. We got a lot more for our money! And a driver who worked in WDW for 10 years and was thrilled to chat. :)

Any questions, let me know. I'm trying to keep to things I didn't necessarily read much about here but happy to answer anything!

cmph, really glad you liked this hotel - we have it booked in a couple of weeks for our pre-cruise stay prior to the 9-night cruise. Last time we stayed at the West End Guest House (B&B) and loved that, but wanted to try this one out instead. It looks great!

Sounds like you had a great cruise!!

Great trip report. couple of questions (we're on the last cruise out in September):
How were the things to do on the the ship during the 2 days at sea (out of Vancouver and to Vancouver)?
Was the food just as good as we remember it several years ago? (Service sounds good as we always remembered)
Tiana's LOUD. Did they tone it down or where were you seated relative to the band?

I have sensitive ears & still found it terribly loud while they played, although I loved the ambiance and Tiana herself. I hope DCL doesn't apply the "club" concept to any more restaurants. I prefer dining without earplugs. I am glad they at least didn't play the whole time, though.

I just don't understand why everyone who puts on a show these days thinks that live music needs to be amplified in a relatively small room (or in a natural amphitheatre). If they would just play their instruments without the microphone & speaker system amplifying them, everyone would still hear it, and those of us with sensitive ears wouldn't be in pain. This is an issue everywhere live music with loud instruments is played: clubs, churches, etc.

Interesting. You said "deluxe". Did you happen to stay gold level (concierge level) at the Fairmont Airport Hotel? We did 2 weeks ago, and our floor & room were lovely. Flawless room with elegant decoration and furniture. Plenty of bathroom privacy: in fact, the bathroom was great. The service was excellent on our floor. Probably our best hotel stay ever, and that's saying a lot.

For the Alaskan ports of call, I completely agree! We did enjoy DCL's post-cruise Vancouver excursion, though.

You'll be happy you chose it! It was a really short walk to Stanley park, like 10min. And we walked back from Granville Island - maybe 25min? We could have walked to the port if not for the luggage, maybe in 20min or so. Sounds weird, but I thought it was kind of fun to go to the Safeway across the street... they had some unique things, totally different stuff in the bakery than we have in the US, Ukrainian food in the prepared food section, etc. I highly recommend trying Nero waffle (it's shortly before the Whole Foods, if you're walking from the hotel) - you can try a 7 waffle tasting of these liege waffles I hadn't had before. The white chocolate matcha was DD's and my favorite. You can grab them to go.

We definitely weren't bored! Tons of craft activities, game show types of things, alcohol tastings, trivia, Mickey 200. If you like trivia, you'll be happy, lots more than I remembered from our last time on the Wonder. They also had special guests on the last sea day - the Lopez couple who wrote the Coco and Frozen music, and also a Broadway actor who plays Olaf had a talk. Two of the naturalist's talks were on the sea days, the art of the theme show tours were both days, napkin folding. Let me know if you were looking for something specific and I will see if I have those navigators. Re: tiana's, they DEFINITELY toned down the quantity. We were just about as far away as possible 1 1/2 years ago and thought it was far too much. This time, we were second from the stage, but a bit to the side, and I was really worried. It's loud still, but like 10% as much playing time as before.

Oh, forgot to ask, who was the cruise director?
Ashley

Was there PIXAR night on Juneau day? I did not see that on recent navigators.
Yes

I feel like it's the new "excellent" speech.

Oh, people are complaining about this change? Just keep telling them it's for their benefit, and they'll forget to think on their own.
Ha, truth!

Interesting. You said "deluxe": did you stay gold level (concierge level) at the Fairmont Airport Hotel? We did 2 weeks ago, and our floor & room were in perfect shape and luxurious. Beautiful room in perfect shape with beautiful decoration and furniture. The service was excellent on our floor. Probably our best hotel stay ever, and that's saying a lot.
Trust me, the music was far worse before. Just imagine that the entire time you ordered and ate. Trying to converse with the servers on our first night was just about impossible. They couldn't hear us, either, and with the language barrier with our assistant server, it was pretty rough. It is still loud, for sure, but tolerable in quantity now.
No - not gold level. That was floor 14. We were on 13. It's considered "deluxe" purely b/c it's high up and has "business amenities" with free wi-fi. I left this off earlier b/c I was trying not to be too nitpicky, but they actually tried to get me to pay $70 to upgrade to that room so that I wouldn't have to wait for my category to become available. I have a membership in Fairmont's rewards program, so wifi is something I'd have anyway. I said "oh definitely no, I don't want to pay $70 just for a higher floor." Then I was told that unfortunately I'd have to wait for a few hours for a room. About an hour later, after lunch, they called me and told me my room was ready. Yup, the 13th floor "deluxe" room that they tried to get me to pay an extra $70 for. o_O Hilariously, the paperwork describing the room's inclusions guaranteed a 10am early arrival availability - and since they didn't let us have it until about 12:00, I'm guessing it was just sitting there waiting while they hoped to get someone to pay for an upgrade. Felt a little shady, but I guess they have to try. The non-wifi business amenities consisted of a folder with letterhead and envelopes. We did have a great view, at least! But my eyebrow was definitely raised by that upgrade nonsense.

Just realized I completely skipped over the food question! We were happy with the food. There were a couple of letdowns with things we'd previously liked (ex: the mashed potatoes served on lobster night were weird, the chocolate fondant my dad and daughter love was gone), but mostly we enjoyed previous favorites and liked new things too. We love Tiana's featured menu - the sea bass entree, beignets, etc. We liked the revamped AP menu with more options than that appetizer sampler thing. Cabanas had some great things at lunch - really good biryani, German potato salad, a great green bean salad, and IMO, the best desserts you'll find on the cruise (aside from the beignets). I don't know why the Cabanas desserts are so much better than the dinner ones, but I find that to be the case. Also, I thought this was nice - Triton's had lengthy brunch times offered on sea days (with cherry crepes, yum). I get kind of bored with Cabanas breakfast, but the banana bread french toast was great and sadly only offered one day. Whoever their pastry purveyor is, is better than the one out of Galveston.

One miss was the shrimp jambalaya entree earlier in the week - not spicy in the slightest (nothing like what's served with the sea bass entree), and possibly the saddest portion any cruise in the history of cruising has offered - literally 2 shrimp and about 1/4 cup of rice. It was the only night I had to get snacks in Crown and Fin! Which was fine b/c the snacks were pretty good, actually. The other bad things I ate were the oriental wraps in Daisy's D'lights (beyond bland) and, um, the banana lentils on the salad bar in Cabanas at lunch. Yeah, you are reading that correctly. I just had to take a bit to see what the heck that was about, and lentil salad with sliced bananas in it is exactly as bad as you're thinking. I don't take food pics, although I should have for that one!

We had Jojo too :) He was great!

You forgot to mention the "false alarm"... !!!

We stayed at Times Square Suites for 4 nights pre-cruise last August and loved it as well. Even though our view was the back alley and we did get some noise, we found it a small price to pay for all the room inside the suite, the kitchen, grocery store across the street, etc. We want to plan another trip to Vancouver just to explore more and we will definitely stay there again.

Thanks for the confirmation about Tiana's. We found it loud last August but when we cruised again this past May, I thought it was a lot better too. I didn't know if it was just table placement (too close to a speaker, etc) or if they really lowered the overall volume. Either way, we definitely enjoyed it even more this past May than before.

Ok, I would really love to see your navigators from this cruise! I'm fangirling out!

I've sailed to Alaska on DCL before, but next month I'm taking an Alaskan cruise on Princess due to booking it last minute and it is within driving distance for me. I would LOVE to know who you used for your private excursion in Juneau? DH is fishing, so I'd like to do whale watching? Would you recommend the company for someone going alone?

I will get them out and take some photos tomorrow, then! I'll tag you in the post to make sure you see. :)

We went through an excursion company that my TA prefers, which jacks up the prices slightly but nowhere near DCL level. (So I guess it was only "sort of" independent?) I was trying to find acceptable booking comfort level (full refund if you didn't make the port, whale sighting guaranteed, etc.) for some family members who have only booked via the cruiseline before. :) However, it was a Harv and Marv boat, which many people recommend here, so start there. We booked a private boat, up to 12 people (we had 11), and payed a set price; for some reason, the Harv and Marv site says up to 14, but it wouldn't have fit that unless someone always sat outside. We had the captain, our naturalist, and us, and snacks/drinks were included. That would be terribly expensive for one person, though!

I'd definitely recommend Harv and Marv though, and see if they have small group tours that aren't private? The only difference is probably transportation to/from the ship being simpler for private tours. We obviously didn't have to stop multiple places to pick up from various ships, and we could choose wherever we wanted to be dropped off afterward.

We have done Harv and Marv twice. 2012 there were 4 of us and we were on a boat with another couple from a different cruise ship. 2018 there were 2 of us and we were on a boat with a family of 4 that was also on the Wonder. Both times we were picked up right at the cruise dock and it was super easy!
