I had reserved a standard room at the fabulous ap rate of $124 including tax, however my parents decided to tag along. They are live near Ocala and are Disney haters so I really wanted to impress them. They are extremely frugal and were already chafing at the price of Boma (DH took them on a tour of the resort while I was checking in so they wouldn't hear the room prices).
I considered getting them their own room, but couldn't get a good view for the AP rate, so I decided to upgrade to concierge. It ended up being the highlight of the trip. We were in room 5315. Since I had never stayed in concierge before I was a bit disappointed that we were on a different floor than the lounge. I think some of the attraction of concierge is staying on that controlled-access 6th floor. However, I got over it quick.
My parents were google-eyed over the whole thing. They think Holiday Inn Express is luxury so you can imagine what they thought about AKL! My dad brought his binoculars and spent hours viewing the animals. He loves that kind of stuff. He even said he would like to work there (he's retired but is still quite spry). Several times we lost him and my mom would say - I bet he's up on "number 6" and sure enough, he would be up there munching on pretzels and drinking latte of all things.
And don't even get me started on the wine, cheese, and evening hors d'oerves! We had to make sure we were home from the parks early enought to partake in the nightly feasts.....
We asked for a coffee maker in the room and had a fridge (by accident I guess). We also met up with 2 folks who were checking out and donated their refillable mugs to the cause. Nice souvenirs for the parents.
Overall the trip was a great success. They were thoroughly impressed - enough to purchase Fl resident seasonal passes! And now they are really looking forward to our April/May trip. We will be "down-grading" to a 2 bedroom DVC villa though. I hope they won't be disappointed.
