What a great time to go, crowds were low.

We drove up from Naples last Saturday and arrived about 4:30. Our standard view 1BR, 3121, was ready. It was to the right of the elevator at the end of the second hallway, about 22 doors from the elevator. Our balcony extended from the bedroom area past the living room, with a view of the canal across the street from self parking, very nice for standard view. It was set up a little differently from every other 1BR we have stayed in. The closet in the entryway was neither to the right or left of the door, it was around the corner from it and the entry area was long enough that it had a second ceiling light. I thought the closet was larger than usual. The luggage fit with no problem, usually we are jamming it between all the stuff in there, this had room to spare. I found a few other things that were different with this room. There was no soap holder in the shower and the ledge inside the shower was too narrow to hold any products. Everything had to be kept on the outside ledge which was kind of strange while you were showering. Also, the shower was very high. I like a towel over the shower top so I can dab at my eyes while showering, and even on my tip toes at 5'8", I had difficulty reaching the top of the shower and there was hardly any clearance to fit the towel over it. Strange, but I did think this room was larger than usual. The last difference I noticed was the placement of the bedroom door. It appeared to be in the same place as usual, but I felt like all I did all week was open and close that door any time I went into the closet or the jacuzzi area. It was constantly in the way. Other than those those oddities, the room was in good shape, and we saw a magnificent rainbow from the balcony before we went out to dinner.

We drove over to Artist Point and both had the plank salmon. Delicious! The server was sweet, but not very efficient. At the end of the meal we got our bill using the new dining plan for the first time. It was eye opening! With the new dining plan, unless you are paying cash, be prepared for a long drawn out bill paying process. First you get the bill with everything you ordered on it, and with a suggested 18% and 20% tip on it. You have to let them know how much you are going to tip, then they take the single bill back and separate it into three bills, 1) the dining plan bill, 2) the tip bill with the tip that you told them you were going to give them printed on it with spaces for an additional tip and the total, and 3) the alcoholic beverage bill with the tip for it included (DDE) plus spaces for an additional tip and the total. You have to sign all three, then they need to know how you're paying the tip. Then they take the tip bill back and charge it to your room or credit card if you are not leaving cash. There are far too many trips to the back this way. You could tell most of them were embarrassed to ask, but it seemed to me that they had to know how you were paying the tip before they would let you leave. At breakfast this a.m., the server had to bring the cash tip to the back and then give us our final bill. He said he didn't believe he had to ask for the tip. It seems like a really poor system. I think they should have just charged more for the plans and included the tip. We were there at a slow time, imagine President's Week if the servers have to waste 15-25 minutes per table getting paid. Poor, poor, poor!

Also, there were incidents with the bill all week. On Monday, my sister and family flew in from NJ making us a group of seven, so the tip was automatically included from then on, and the service was not always great, but all the servers still got 18% including the server at the 1900 Park Fare buffet breakfast who made herself very scarce throughout the breakfast. She did not do a great job, and I'm sure she knew it. I don't think she wanted to take a chance with a smaller tip, so she just immediately brought us the dining plan bill and the 18% tip bill. It just didn't seem worth it to argue with a manager to leave her less, but she didn't deserve the $20+ tip she got.
My sister gave cash tips all week. At Yachtsman, I guess the server also wanted to cut out one of the steps, so since my sister had no charging on her room key, he just charged her tip to my room, he didn't bother asking how she was paying the tip. It was interesting.
Crazy as it was, with the deluxe plan we did eat at a lot of nice places. We ate a full breakfast every day (Cape May Cafe, Yacht Club Galley, Tusker House, 1900 Park Fare and Spoodles) and a 2 credit dinner (Artist's Point, Flying Fish, Brown Derby, Narcoossee's, and Yachtsman Steakhouse) every evening with the exception of Teppan Edo. There were no complaints about the food anywhere.

Enough about the food! With the crowds so low, all week we were pretty much able to walk on almost any ride with somewhere between a 5-20 minute wait. One exception at MK was Peter Pan, where the wait was 45 minutes and beyond. At Epcot we got to go on Spaceship Earth even though the official opening is not until February. That was a treat! Ellen's ride was down early in the day (I guess someone stood up), but we got on later in the day. Also because of the low crowds, we were able to spend a whole day in both MK and AK. The longest we've been able to endure either place since the kids were little is half a day, but there wasn't that jostling, crushing feeling we usually find at those two parks. We actually stayed in MK all day until 5:00 when we had to leave for dinner and we had a great time going on things we've bypassed for years. At MGM, even though it was very manageable by day, we found Fantasmic to be standing room only. We were quite surprised by that.

Other tidbits: The cab fare from Grand Floridian to the Boardwalk was $13.50 plus tip. The self parking there is much farther away than at BW.

A heads up for anyone arriving by car this weekend. There are going to be 34,000 people there for the marathon and roads will be closed. Our bellman said last year he was stuck on a closed road for two hours trying to get into work. Call and ask which roads will be closed.

The kids used the quiet pool since the feature pool was closed, but they will shuttle you to Stormalong Bay if you want.

Anytime you pay down your bill, get a receipt. The kids had gift cards they didn't use so I gave them cash for them and went to the front desk the last night to put them toward my bill. Thankfully, upon starting the transaction I asked the girl what my balance was. It was $476. I gave her four gift cards, a reward card, and some Disney dollars totaling $225. She spent ten minutes swiping the cards, putting the info into the computer, etc. and then she says, "okay." I ask for a receipt. She says, "You'll get it under your door tonight." I say, "I'd like one now." (It's not like it was $10. She threw the cards into the key drop box, I have nothing that says I gave her a dime.) She hems and haws and I ask, "What's my balance now?" She looks at the computer and says, "$451." Obviously, there's a problem. She gets the manager, Ryan I think, and 25 minutes later the problem was fixed. My husband was fuming because the whole fiasco made us late for dinner but I wanted everthing credited before they charged my credit card. So annoying! My point: always get a receipt!

All in all we had a great trip, despite the little annoyances. We won't get to see everyone again until Easter, so what could be better than getting together at Disney, especially since they love it as much as we do. It was just an awesome time!

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Thank you for the detailed report about the DDP. I always thought it was strange that an optional "tip" would automatically be included in the bill and it didn't matter if you got good service or bad service. I thought taking the tip out of the DDP, was a good thing, then it would make the service better, but I guess not. They just add the amount they want to the bill for you. Very strange system. :confused3

Thanks Aunt Sue!

We were at BWV from Friday until Tuesday.

We stayed all but 1 night in standard 3085, then moved to BW view 3007. We had a good view of the lawn, but was very close to the elevators. It was an excellent trade-off.

We had a really great trip with standard dining plan.

We didn't have any real trouble with the bill. We didn't purchase alcohol and just asked that the (automatic 18%) tip be added to the room. On a few occassions we referred to the room key as "cash". That confused things, but we were able to square it away fairly quickly. I ate dinner one night from Beach Club Marketplace (Sandwich, Chips, Drink) and used 2 snack credits, and said the sandwich was cash. Then the cashier wanted cash, believe it or not. (I'm pretty bad about substituting similar but totally inappropriate words.) I quickly asked that she charge the sandwich to the room.

We also learned fairly quickly to tell the wait staff that we had 3 separate bills. One waiter changed his attitude when he found out we had 3 separate bills. He got his 18% anyway, but it was obvious why his attitude changed.

Biergarten and Cape May Breakfast were our best meals.

I stayed in that room once a few years ago and remember the lack of a soap holder in the shower! I think I remember the door problem too.

So would it be best to not have the charging option on your room key and always leave cash for the tip?

The last thing I want to do is wait around for a CM while my kids are chomping at the bit to get back to doing the rides, parades, etc. The waiting at the end of the meal is the worst when you have small children. They have full bellies and have been sitting just long enough to want to go go go...again!

Do you think you did well (cost-wise) with the Deluxe Plan each and every day, or do you think you broke-even?

I was thinking of doing the Deluxe Plan, but am not sure I could eat 3 meals a day to make it 'worthwhile'.

Of the breakfasts and dinners you had during this trip, which were the best (and you would do again)?

Thanks for your great report!

Thank you for your detailed report, it is much appreciated.

Boy that DDP sounds like a nightmare for the CMs. I hope they do something to improve this present situation.

crbruce...it was very strange and very time consuming everywhere we went. It only started on the 1st of the year, and we were there the 5th through the 11th. Maybe it will get better with time. Several of the servers commented on the fact that we were the first time they were working with the deluxe plan, but the only difference really was that we got an appetizer. I would hope they can get the kinks worked out, because without exaggeration nowhere did it take less than 15 minutes to settle up the bill and several times it took longer. Sometimes, it's hard enough to get them to bring you the bill in the first place, now they have to come to your table three times. It's a poor system.
Also, I don't know if you could leave 15% if you so desired because it does say "optional" tip so technically you should be able to leave what you want, but because we were a group of seven (2 & 5), (2 separate bills, actually 6) the new rule automatically forces us to leave 18% which we knew up front. Park Fare was the only place where we could describe the service as poor. On the other hand, when just DH & I went to Cape May Cafe we had unbelievable service. Dorothy was constantly filling our juice glasses & coffee cup and asking us if we needed anything else. She led everyone in Happy Birthday for the next table, she rushed over to take our picture when she saw a character come to our table. She was spectacular. She got the 20% and it was a buffet. It really was the most attentive service we had all week.

Mickey'sApprentice...My sister, her DH & the kids were in a Boardwalk view in 3003 & 3005 but they said they were quite far from the elevators. They were under Crest o' the Wave way down past the DVC office on the Boardwalk. They weren't able to finalize their dates until after eleven months out, so I wasn't able to get them standard view. We got the deluxe plan because we are throwbacks to the glory days when you could eat anywhere you wanted. We are veterans of the Signature restaurants, which everyone loves, so we went with deluxe. It was nice, but DH & I much prefer to get up at our leisure and eat breakfast in our room. This way we felt like we were always rushing off to breakfast at the crack of dawn.
We always told the servers we were 5 & 2. It didn't really speed anything up for us. We didn't tell them to automatically charge the 18% to our room because my sister always gave cash, but maybe that would have saved time. Did they still have to go back & forth three times? With so many snack credits, it would be helpful if you could use 2 snack credits to get a sandwich or a burger. We actually snacked more with this plan than we did in December with the basic plan because we ate breakfast early and didn't have dinner until 7:00 or 7:30 every night. Then, we had 9 snacks left over, this time we only had 3 and we took water for the road.
We really enjoyed the food at all the places we ate.

DebbieB... Wasn't it crazy? I felt like all I did was walk around in circles!

DVCJones...I was telling my husband about your question and he said, "How will that help? They still have to bring the cash to show someone in the back like at Spoodles." Maybe if you tell them in advance to charge the tip to the room like Mickey'sApprentice did, that might save one step. Your babies are little so I can see why you'd like to get out as soon as possible. The way it works now is a nuisance!

I'll continue in a new reply because it's not letting me print my entire reply to epicurean girl.

auntsue:

We stayed Thursday thru Monday in STANDARD 3085 with a lawn view.
We switched and stayed Monday night in BOARDWALK VIEW 3007.

Room 3007 was all the way at the end, with the really long, long walk, in the Crest of the Wave section. The view from that room was spectacular. I think your relatives were our next door neighbors!

Our Standard Dining Plan worked really well for us. We had 1 (2 TS) meal for our Illuminations Grand Gathering and paid cash for Cape May Cafe and the Plaza. Our GG meal was on the day we switched rooms and we had 2 credits on the old card and 2 credits on the new card. We gave the waitress one card with my name on it and the other card with DH's name on it. The waitress figured it out on the 1st try. I was impressed.

We used all of our credits, and paid for 2 meals. I couldn't figure out why we had 4 days of dining plan if we were there for 5 days. Most of our snacks paid for bottled waters in the parks. We planned out our TS meals so it wasn't difficult to figure out which meals we needed to pay cash.

Overall, standard DDP worked out for us. We've stayed before and did lots of TS meals and found that it really took away from our park time. Half and Half or 60-40 TS works well for us.

Sorry about that, the number lock was not on, and everytime I typed in numbers, it moved the curser all over.

epicureangirl...I always start out strong keeping track of costs, then I quickly die. This time it lasted until my sister showed up, then meals got much more chaotic. This is what I have. For 2 adults, Artist's Point: $116.49, tip - $22..50, drinks & tip $9.50. Cape May Cafe $40.45, tip - $8. Flying Fish $136.84, tip - $29.00 drinks & tip $17.00. Captain's Grille (new name for YCG) $32.53, tip - $6.00. Brown Derby Fantasmic Package $104.76, tip - $18.00, drinks & tip $20. Tusker House $40.45, tip - $7. Teppan Edo about $72 because my tip receipt is $13. I can't find the receipts for Narcoossee's but it must have been at least $140 with the $58 surf & turf and the $38 filet mignon.
So in general terms, it looks like per person per day the value was about $16- $20 for breakfast, $36- $75 for dinner, and $4 minimum for 2 snacks. If you go with 1 credit dinners, we found that most lunches ran $13. We didn't take it because we thought we'd do well financially, but rather so that we didn't have to weigh the cost vs. the value of each item. It was prepaid so we didn't think twice about spending $58 on an entree. In real life, that's a little hard to swallow! You have to eat a lot to get your money's worth. By the end of the week it's rough. At Yachtsman 4 of us didn't get dessert, so there you're basically losing $40 worth of credit. My sister still had deluxe credits left because they left at 6 a.m. on Friday and nothing was open that early. I think you would probably save money not getting it, because like I said, it's highly unlikely that we would have ordered in the same manner if we were paying OOP, but it was nice not lugging around $839. We are getting the basic plan in April.
I noticed on the DDP forum that someone on the deluxe plan has ressies every day at 1 credit restaurants for lunch and 2 credit restaurants for dinner. They will certainly get their money's worth doing it that way, but I can't imagine anyone will be able to eat that much food in one day.
We really did enjoy every restaurant and would go back to each one. I would rank them in this order 1) Flying Fish - outstanding food & service, 2) Yachtsman Steakhouse - excellent food & very good service, 3) Narcoossee's - excellent food, mediocre service, 4) Brown Derby - very good food & service, 5) Artist's Point - very good food, mediocre service, 6) Teppan Edo - Good food, fair service. For breakfast, my DH felt that the food was basically the same at all the restaurants, but he preferred 1900 Park Fare because of the made to order omelette. The service there was definitely the worst, but the character interaction was great. The best service we had was when we ate by ourselves at Cape May.
We only ate lunch twice on this trip, once at Backlot Express we shared a burger, fries & drink (it was okay) and once at Columbia Harbour House. There, DH got a half sandwich, soup & drink and I paid OOP for a soup. We really enjoyed it.

Muushka...I felt sorry for some of the CM's. You could see it was awkward for most of them to come right out and ask for the tip. Several said, "I'm sorry to have to ask, but..." Imagine doing that in a real world restaurant. DH said that would NEVER fly. It's ludicrous!

DH also wanted me to relate this to you. Once, coming out if IJ I stopped at a cart for a soda and the guy didn't know what he was doing. He spent about 10 minutes trying to get my card to use a snack. One of the people behind me said, "For G..'s sake, let me just buy her a soda." Finally another CM came by & she knew what she was doing & it worked. As I was leaving, I heard the CM say to the next guy, "Oh thank goodness, CASH!" DH said to let you know this because you may run into problems here & there, but why, I don't know, since they've had snacks for quite some time.

As the CM's get used to this new system, maybe they will find a way to expedite matters. I certainly hope so, because as of right now, it takes entirely too long.

Mickey'sApprentice...Sorry, I misunderstood about your room location. Oh my goodness, if you were next to the studio section, you were next to the 'kids' (19, 21 & 26). They did say it was a beautiful view.

Do you get a full dinner for the Illuminations GG? How was the food? Where do you get to view it from? We used to love the Illuminations Cruise until they raised the price to well over $200. We haven't done that since then, so now we are always trying to scout out a good place for viewing.

Even the kids said they preferred the old DDP because they are not early risers. We got the Deluxe because they were only staying four nights so using 2 credits per meal would have only given them two dinners. I doubt if we will get it again. We always talk about eating offsite, but we never do. This time, seven of us wouldn't have fit in my Taurus and I already have my ressies for all six dinners onsite next time as well, so I guess we won't be eating offsite any time soon.

I did think that a lot of time was wasted eating and we were never at the parks upon opening because we were still at the restaurants. The Deluxe DDP is a lot of food and we are too old to be eating that way anymore. I think the basic DDP will be just fine for us in the future.

Thanks for your answers, that's great to know. I have a split reservation, pre and post cruise so knowing your experience maybe I'll just get the deluxe for the last night (on it's own) so I can split it over 2 days. I should be able to tackle 3 TS in 2 days without any problem! I wasn't sure if I should go to the Cape May for the character breakfast, even though I'll be at BCV. After hearing your experience, I definitely will. :)

auntsue:

Your relatives were just fine. We didn't here a peep.

Illuminations GG - The food was good, but a bit of a let down. It was very much on par with the 1 TS credit WS restaurants. It did not approach the quality of an Artist Point or Yachtsman Steakhouse Dinner. The food was served buffet style in big chaffing dishes. We had Chicken Parmesan/Penne Pasta, Beef Fajitas, Bratwurst and Kraut, Sweet & Sour Chicken, and probably something else. The dessert was supposed to be outside, but it was threatening rain so the dessert cart was brought inside. I'm guessing that the desserts were done in a French style. Everything was minaturized and tasted much better than it looked. Most of it was in little muffin cups. The fruit cups were in miniature martini glasses. It made it easy to try several different desserts, and everybody did.

The entertainment provided by "Aunt Roz" was ok, but not great. Before the show she went over to every table to find out what was so special about the evening and then announced it later in the show. Minnie and Goofy showed up, and there was dancing. Later a lot of folks had their pictures taken with Minnie and Goofy.

Disney tried to improve the ambience of the old Odyssey Restaurant, but it is still an International Overlay of a 1982 Epcot style restaurant.

We also got very special Lanyard pins that allowed us to get into the special viewing locations. (These were really nice.)

The viewing location for Illuminations was spectacular. We were escorted to the area behind the gift shop at the entrance to World Showcase. This is bar none the best location to view Illuminations. It turns out that Illuminations has a front. Who knew? This view is like standing in front of the castle for Wishes. DH and I have watched Illuminations from the UK many times including from the terrace at the Rose & Crown. This was much, much better. The UK is a side view. The only thing that would compare with this view is the areas adjacent to this, and at American Adventure. The problem is that I think the areas next to this are taken up early, and I don't think there is good viewing from American Adventure. As for the cruise, you are still paying good money for a side view, albeit one that is close up and from water level.

Overall:
Food - (1TS)
On par with Biergarten and other 1TS

Ambience - (CS+)
Needs Major Remodel, kind of like dressed up Electric Umbrella.

Show - (1TS-) I just have trouble getting into Aunt Roz, or Dee ViCee, or Sara Toga. Surely they can come up with an appropriate international character without inventing one.

Illuminations (3TS) WOW!

Extras: It was great to have characters, a photo op, and some really neat pins.

Finally: If you've got a big group - 8 or more paying - go for it. (The 2 y.o. in our group didn't count.) Just know that the wow factor is at the very end.

You do have to sign up for a grand gathering and everybody must be staying on property. Our group went around and around with the GG people about my friend's parents that lived in Melbourne and had resident passes. They were ok with getting a room and the dinner, but GG wanted them to get 3 days park tickets, a room for 3 days, etc. It was going to be $1,200. They finally got hold of somebody with a little sense and worked it out. At one point, they also wanted everyone to pay with the same method, all dining plan or nobody on dining plan. My friend's parents eventually prepaid while everyone else was on the dining plan. Geesh!

Anyway, the Illuminations GG is 2TS OR $59.99 for adults and $29.99 for children.

Sorry for the long post.

Mickey'sApprentice...Thanks for all the interesting info about the GG. The viewing space sounds fabulous. We've gone with as many family members as 14 and we once did a Tony's Town Square GG breakfast, but I never heard of the Illuminations dinner. With our big family trips, it's always been like a zoo at mealtimes, loud & crazy (picture Christmas dinner run amok). Now that we're only four hours away, we kind of just meet up with each family individually if we're down here. In December we met my other sister & her DH, and in April we'll meet up with my brother & his DW.

I can't believe they hassled you so much. It doesn't sound like it was any kind of bargain, other than the view, so you'd think they'd be happy that people were signing up for it. I thought when we were at Epcot there were signs by the old Odyssey saying 'Closed for Refurb.' Maybe I'm wrong, but we cut through there one day and I thought I remembered seeing a sign outside.

Anyway, thanks for sharing. Maybe next time we'll head up to the area adjacent to the gift shop because you sure can't beat being right in front of the castle.
