Just Back from 6 Nights at Paradise Pier

I've been going to Disneyland since I was a baby, and we've (almost) always stayed at the Paradise Pier Hotel, even back before Disney owned it and it was called the Pan Pacific Hotel. We love the hotel and it is our preferred place to stay when we travel to Disneyland. I was able to get six nights for an average of about a hundred and thirty dollars a night with the new promotion. This was for a standard room.

We arrived around 9 am on June 15th. We had left Texas on a 6am flight from Houston. To make the flight, we had woken up around 3:30 Texas time, which equals 1:30am California time. Needless to say, we were very tired on Friday!

We checked in with a very friendly cast member who gave my 4 year old a Jonas Brothers necklace. Our room wasn't ready yet, and we headed to Rainforest Cafe, Build a Bear, and DCA. We checked but the room wasn't ready. We went back to the hotel around 2:30, and when I called a CM told me that rooms are generally never ready until between 3:00 and 5:00. I thought 3:00 was reasonable, but 5:00.....not so much. It was also frustrating having been there since 9:00 am, but seeing people arrive, check in at the front desk, and head straight to their rooms! I know that rooms are assigned upon check-in and our assigned room just wasn't finished, but still....yuck. Thankfully our room was ready a little after 3 and we headed to our room on the 5th floor. We were given a theme-park view room, although you can't see much on the 5th floor. I was happy with the upgrade, but I really hope they are not charging people extra for these lower-level theme park view rooms. Basically it is a view of construction and pretty darn ugly.

My daughter was asleep by 6:00 pm and my mom and I were hoping not to be far behind. Mom went into the bathroom and called to me that we had a leak. Sure enough, quite a bit of water is coming from the ceiling right over the toilet. I call and let them know, and they say they will send someone down. I called around 6:45. At 7:30 I call back and explain that I'm not trying to be rude, but we're really just waiting on them before we go to bed, had an early flight, etc. 15 minutes later a very nice maintence main comes up, checks out the leak and says, 'Uhh, I'll be right back." 20 minutes later he comes back and says that the leak originated two floors up with some people who were drinking, overflowed their tub, and had water all slung around the room. He said security was dealing with it now, but the room above ours was soaked and those people hadn't been in the room. He gave us the choice of staying where we were and having housekeeping come serilize, or moving. I told him I'd really rather avoid moving, as we were unpacked and my four year old was sleeping. He said that was fine and he'd send housekeeping. Unfortunately, by the time housekeeping got there the leak still hadn't quit, so it was pointless for them to clean up when more was just coming. At this point I'm trying to figure out what will get us to bed faster, and figure it would be packing everything up and moving. I call and the CM at the front desk tells me she'll have to call me back. 40 minutes later we get the call that they can move us and she is sending the bell captain up to help us. At this point, I think it's near 10 and we are zombies. The bell captain was VERY nice, and he helps me and our things to our new room on the 14th floor. This room was not park facing, but was larger than our old room and appeared to be an upgrade. It was a very nice room and after we slept, we were happy to have it. ;) It was nice that it seems the glass elevator only has down buttons for the 3rd, 14th, and 15th floors, so we didn't have to wait for the elevator. Upon checkout, I also noticed that the hotel had removed the resort fee from the bill.

Housekeeping was wonderful. We arrived back at the room around 11 or 12 every day and the room was already clean. My daughter loved the pool and the slide, and spend a few hours in the tv room over the week. Most of the rest of the staff was pleasant, although not as friendly as they've been in the past, a trend we noticed throughout Disneyland. I have to wonder if the HUGE crowds they saw last week didn't play a huge part in the service throughout the park.

Just wanted to give a recent update. Paradise Pier is still a great place to stay and we will be back in a year or so!

Unless I missed something in your post....they didn't offer you a free meal or something? I have heard of others staying at one of the DLR hotels and being offered a free character meal for their trouble. They only comped you the Resort Fee? Well, better than nothing, I suppose.

Anyway, very interesting, though. I, myself, had a room from hell ON THE 5th FLOOR (coincidence? Hmmmm.....) of the PPH last October - Room 513, I think it was - and the water from the bathroom faucet smelled like poo, to be blunt. (See my Trip Report - link in signature below - for details on the House of Poo.) Now, we did not complain about it while we were there for a few reasons: one, because we kept thinking it was just a fluke and that the water would get "back to normal" the next time we turned on the faucet; two, because it was never a good time to call and complain - when we first noticed the water issue, it was nighttime and we were unpacked and ready for bed, and the next day and a half were jam-packed with activities in our schedule, so we didn't have a good block of time to sit and wait for PPH to deal with the issue; and three, I was thinking that exactly what you described would happen to us - we would be waiting for hours for the problem to be resolved and then we still end up having to re-pack (a Herculean task for me) and move to a different room. I knew my friend would be mad if we had to go to all that trouble, too. So I left it alone for our brief stay and hoped that the water was not a health threat - though if we had been there as many nights as you were there, I definitely would have complained on the spot!! (We also had a drawer in the armoire that would not stay shut and my friend banged into it in the middle of the night!) So I called to complain and then sent an e-mail when I got home - so they could fix the plumbing and check the water for the next guests in that room.

Overall, I like the PPH too and have stayed there many times. Generally they are on the ball, but that one trip for us, not only was the room cursed (or maybe the 5th floor is cursed!!), but the CMs at the desk were not alert either. When we went back in December, everything was fine!

ETA: I know about the 3:00 p.m. check-in, and sometimes have even been able to get into the room at 1:00 p.m., but I have never heard them say "between 3:00 and 5:00" that the room would be ready!! Is that a new policy? That seems extreme to me. Three o'clock is one thing. Between 3 and 5 is a different story!

Right, no free meal or anything was offered.

However, I don't think I mentioned this above, but I had orginally booked 5 nights (Monday-Friday). I added an extra night on Expedia. When I checked in, the CM told me she could link my reservation so we wouldn't have to change rooms. So, I guess technically, they could have moved us Sunday night, then made us check out again Monday morning, and check into a new room Monday afternoon. That would have ticked me off considerably, but it would be within their rights to do so.

Our room on the 14th floor was one of those on the very top floor that kind of juts out of the rest of the hotel. Does that make any sense? It also included a dvd player and the closet was located in the bathroom instead of in the room. I'm thinking it was a concierge room, maybe? It was nice.

Funny, about the 5th floor horrors! Glad to hear that in your instance it was a one time deal. We're hoping for a better stay next time, as well. We also noticed when we walked in a big wet spot on the carpet. Don't know if it was just early signs of the leak or if they'd had to clean the carpets.

and the water from the bathroom faucet smelled like poo

hmmmm...I just got back - Stayed on Harbor - and I thought my faucet water smelled of poo too...could it be Anahaim water? There where lots of times when the air smelled of poo too.

Thanks so much for the recent review. I'm probably going to stay here in Aug, so it's nice to get an update (it's been two yrs since we have stayed there).

Ok you guys are cracking me up about the smell of poo. :rotfl2::rotfl2:

I think Anaheim water smells like really really really FOUL breath from someone with severe dental issues.

NOt the water in the parks usually (though our May trip we experienced that smell in the water at Wine Country Trattoria), but in the hotels OH yes. PPH and DLH so far. At PPH I blamed it on the shampoo etc...but then I noticed it at DLH without the shampoo etc (just me using something else instead of their products).

Sorry for the derail, OP.

what are the resort fee's? I think for 6 days and the comp of the resort fee's for those days would add up to at least 60.00 right? ( or more) I love the paradise pier !!! just not going to pay those prices ( wish I could )

The Resort Fee is $12 a night - PLUS the whopping 15% tax (have they increased the tax with the recent California tax hike? I am not sure). So it was $13.80 per night last year; I assume it is the same this year. I think it was good that they refunded the Resort Fee after all that hassle, but I just thought it was curious because, as I previously stated, I have read others' accounts of trouble at one of the 3 hotels and being offered a character meal for their trouble, usually in addition to a credit to their bill of some kind. So I am surprised they didn't offer the OP the meal on top of the Resort Fee, but refunding the Resort Fee is better than nothing.

I wonder? It's an Anaheim Poo Conspiracy! Maybe Anaheim has a high sulfur content to their pipes, or maybe there is extra sulfur underground seeping into the pipes somehow that is not supposed to be there. I know that there is one intersection near where I live in L.A. that is known for being very smelly. Everyone notices it when they walk or drive by. It is a good area of town otherwise, but this smell is disgusting and there seems to be no visible source. We have a lot of methane gas underground in our area, and I always assumed that that somehow caused the odor, but I think it is a strong sulfur smell.

I don't know what it is, but it was very strong in our PPH water last October - to the point where it was getting unbearable if we kept the faucet turned on for longer than a second. If we had been there another couple of days, I would have definitely called and complained while we were there, but there was just not enough time to deal with it in an already brief/jam-packed trip. To deal with the issue right then would have taken a big chunk out of either our sleeping time or our activities time, which was limited anyway.

FIrst of all to the OP, so sorry about your nearly disastrous stay. I have heard mixed reviews of PPH, But I do see that there are those that really love it. I am glad to see that it did not bother your vacation and that you will still go back!
Second, I have a hard time understanding the 3:00p.m. check in. Years ago I worked for Hyatt hotels in housekeeping. We started cleaning rooms at 8:00 A.M. We had all suites and we had an average of 20 minutes to clean the rooms. So by time I left work at 3:30 I had cleaned about 17 suites. Now our supervisor checked with us every hour to see what rooms were ready for check in. She constantly entered them into the computer so that front desk could make them available to guests. It was the hotel policy to never check anyone in before 1 PM. (and that was an approved early check-in) It always irked me when I would hear people at front desk asking to check in after a long flight (kids crying b/c they need a nap, etc.) and hearing the front desk say there were no rooms available. This after I had cleaned 9 or 10 rooms already. Now, if someone made a big stink at the front desk, you can believe they used the ol "Oh wait, a room just became available" line.
Last summer at DLH we had to wait til 3:00 P.M. to check in. We had a long 9 hour drive and the little one was cranky. All I wanted to do was put her down for her nap. I just wish they would be more accomodating with this policy.

My first thought when I read the OP's first post was, Okay, I am used to the 3:00 p.m. speech from the hotels (though we have been fortunate to be able to check in earlier than that during the Fall/off-peak seasons), but when did they start saying the rooms were not ready until "3:00 - 5:00 p.m."?? That seems to me like they have lost some housekeeping staff (possibly due to budget cuts??) and now there are fewer people to clean the rooms. It's not like they have added any more rooms to the hotel to be cleaned. It is the same number of rooms, so saying "3:00 - 5:00 p.m." implies to me that they are short-staffed. But I have always felt that when they say there are "no rooms available yet," there probably are SOME rooms available, but they may be rooms with, for example, a partial view of the park or something more specific that people pay for, and rather than let us standard room folks into that kind of room, they have to save the partial view room for someone who is paying for it, which makes sense - IF that is what they are doing!

I do like the PPH, in spite of its poo issues (and if I had the leaking problem the OP had, I would have been agitated) and I will go back there again. In fact, there is a $129 per night AP rate in late September which is looking mighty tempting!!
