To be fair you had 4 people at your Disney vacation and 5 people at your Universal vacation. You had one room for your Disney vacation and 2 for your Universal vacation. The one extra night won't make a difference. You had deluxe accommodations for your Universal vacation and moderate for your Disney vacation. You've included your airfare in the two totals. That really doesn't reflect on either park.
What you should have done was purchase an annual pass for two people at Universal. The cost of the annual pass is $225 and you would only have needed 2 of them. You would have saved A LOT of money with the 30% room discounts, food discounts and ticket discounts. The price difference between the 4 day ticket and the annual pass is small and would probably have been made up in the first night's stay.
I have a food sticky on the Universal boards. I've compared prices for the standard fare at Universal and Disney. Generally, Universal is cheaper. For example, a breakfast croissant is over a dollar more expensive at Disney and does not come with a side of fruit. Cheeseburger platters are also less expensive at Universal. Mythos, the top restaurant in IOA, is cheaper than the top sit down restaurants at the Disney parks.
There are lots of ways to make your Universal vacation inexpensive. You just have to research it, like you do for Disney, first.
