We just got back from a great trip to WDW. We are DVC members so we do not use the dining plan, however, we did eat at 4 character meals. First up was Chef Mickeys at the Contemporary Resort on 9/19. We had a great time at this meal. We had a 5:10 adr and got in right away. The characters we saw were Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and Donald. They all took pictures with both of my kids and signed my dds autograph book. The food was just ok but I wouldnt go back for the food. It was nice to get all 5 main characters at one meal.
For our next meal we went to the Tusker House for a 10:25 adr for breakfast on 9/20. As soon as we checked in they told us they were running at least 25 minutes behind. They gave us our pager and we walked around and entertained ourselves for a while. There were a lot of unhappy diners waiting to be seated. Several people went to the podium to see what was taking so long. We were finally sat at 11:10. On our way in, we were greated by a cast member who apologized for our wait and gave us a slip for a free fast pass at any ride that accepts fast passes. I thought it was a nice gesture although I knew we were not going to be able to use it. I just thought it was nice they recognized the inconvenience they caused and tried to make up for it. The food here was really good. Great selection, everything was hot. Our server did tell us they would only have the breakfast food out until 11:30 so we should make big plates and get what we wanted before they switched to lunch. The good thing was that we would have the option to try both menus. We all ate so much breakfast that we had no room to sample the lunch menu. The characters at this meal were very rushed and Mickey left before we got to see him. We talked to one of the CM's and they apologized but said he needed to get to the character greeting spots so he had to leave. I was a little disappointed in this. I just think when you pay to see 4 characters you should get to see them all. The good thing was my kids were ok with it as they knew we would see him later in the day. We did get to see Daisy, Donald and Goofy.
Our next meal was for the Storybook Diner at Akershus on 9/20 at 5:00pm. We had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. My DD took a picture with Belle and we went to sit down. The cold buffet was good and my kids were pretty pleased with it. DH ordered the mahi mahi and I had the beef tips. My kids had the cheese ravioli and the grilled chicken. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The characters came pretty quickly and posed for pictures and signed autographs. My only complaint with the characters at this meal is all but one ignored my 2 year old son. Maybe they assumed he was a boy and didnt care? They were great with DD, especially Ariel who is her favorite. We got to see Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel, and Aurora in addition to Belle in the beginning.
Next up was Ohana with Lilo and Stitch on 9/23. We had a 10:55 reservation and didnt sit until almost noon time. Once again, there were a lot of unhappy people waiting around and questioning what was taking so long. We were given some pineapple bread, juice, coffee and fruit immediately. The food, however took a while. The server commented that the kitchen had been slammed and were running behind. She also mentioned they didnt have a dishwasher? Not sure if the machine was down or they didnt have anyone to wash the dishes, but we were eating on disposable plates. When the food arrived it was hot and pretty good. The characters again were pretty rushed here but they did pose for pictures and sign autographs so my kids were happy with it. Stitch was the best and actually came back to our table again just to give my kids a high five.

So overall, I think chacter meals seem to work out best when you have an earlier ADR. They seem to fall behind throughout the morning and by the end are running about an hour late. I dont know if its like this all the time, or if Free Dining has them falling behind. Next year we've decided to do only one character meal and only at a resort. Of the 4 we did, the only one I would repeat again was Tusker House. I would like to try breakfast at CM because the characters are great, but the food for dinner wasnt so great. Maybe breakfast is better?

As long as they have offered free dining you would think they would have a good working routine in place by now. It shouldn't be that hectic. Things should flow smoothly and all of the families should be rushed or stressed. The families with the later arrival times shouldn't have less of an experience because they don't have their act together.

Sounds to me like their dish-washing machine broke. They could have pulled just about anyone to run the machine.

I'm glad to see that you and your family were very understanding and made the most of it all! :goodvibes

Disposable plates...Wow.... :scared1:

If the dishwasher was broken they have to use disposable plates. They wouldn't be allowed to use the real ones with no way of properly washing and sanitising them.

Interesting. This isn't the first time Disney has offered free dining. The paper plates at Ohana is surprising. My family likes the CM breakfast much better, but the character greetings make up for the food. This is my first month on this board so I don't know if the dining headaches have been a problem in the past, but there are other threads out that with some of the same observations. Glad that your family was still about the magic.:smickey:

I think I can beat the disposable plates at 'Ohana. We went for dinner on a previous trip. We waited a long time and when we were seated, they brought the salad. However, there was no silverware. We couldnt get our server's attention for what seemed like a long time. When he finally came over and we asked for silverware, he said there wasnt any, but he would see what he could do. More food came out and still no silverware. They were finally able to supply plastic forks and knives! We did not enjoy that meal at alll. No apologies either. That is the one and only time we went, but we are going to give it another try on our next trip.

Disposable plates :scared1: that is so wrong !!!

If the dishwashing machine was broken, the alternative would be to close the restaurant.

When I was there in June, we had a lunch ADR at Crystal Palace and it was closed due to a "kitchen problem".

I was beginning to think I was the only one who read about the issue there. Thanks.

Wow, chef mickeys was kind of crazy when iw ent for breakfast too. But the characters were great with my son. Hes 17mnonths now but he loves the characters. And they played with him when they came to our table. At ohanas, the characters again were awesome. Mickey sat at the table with my son and sat there for more than a minute. Stitch is allways fun. But i really didnt care for the food, there wasnt much variety. The akershus rest. I loved the food. The princesses were awesome with my son. But my son doeant like aurora, at all. And the pic i have of him that day he was looking at her with a disgusted face. I felt bad. But ive pretty much have had good character dinings. Tuskar is my fave. And crystal palce was good too. The one i want to try again is cape may. The only reason is because my pictures came out bad, there was soo much sun light coming into the place my pics came out like orangy. But goofy hung out with my son for awhile. He even fed him cheerios. It was cool.

I just got back as well and can tell you CM was almost as bad even for 9:00 am ressie. I think part of the problem was there were a lot of people trying to get in without a ressie. There were several people at 1900 PF, trying to do that and when the CM told them it would be a 2 hour wait. At Ohana's 3 people in line in front of me were trying to see if they could get in (2 of the 3 had parties with 6 or more people). We did Tusker House early like 9:00 and it was very good and relatively quick (I agree the key is ADRs before the park opens)

We had 6:10 reservations at CP and they were running over an hour late, but told us 15 minutes when we first arrived. It was horribly hot and everyone was VERY unhappy. I spoke to the manager and her only option for us was to trade down for counter service, which we did later in the week when 1900 PF left us waiting for over an hour. No apology either time. My husband was pretty upset, but as I pointed out, it was free, so what did we expect? I would have been livid if I had paid for the dining and been left like that (which undoubtedly happened to some people). Also, we were served on disposable plates for our early reservation at O'hana, as well, and there was no mention of any kitchen problems. Made me think maybe they are switching over to that for good.

In future, I would make character meal reservations for as early as possible (preferably breakfast). The non-character meals got us in within about 15 minutes of our reservations. I understand that they are busy with the free dining, but to run over an hour late is ridiculous. What is the point of having a reservation?

I agree, I will note there were plenty of empty tables at most of the CM we were at (Not enough wait staff maybe) so I was utterly confused why there was a wait (or one for more than 5 mins) for anyone with an ADR). I have to say we were lucky and seated with 5-10 mins of all our ADRs. Only exception was Ohanas but it was a nightmare just trying to get checked in there.

Free dining really isnt "free". You do pay for it in the rack rate of your hotel but it is a good discount. Still, I do think an hour wait for an ADR is too long even if you have free dining. Maybe they are overbooking too much and should make adjustments? Other than the waits, our experience with the character meals were pretty good. I just wouldnt waste my park time waiting for a character meal in the future. We will stick with counter service on park days and character meals/restaurants on days we are not in the parks.

We had very long waits as well. We were on the dining plan but paid for it as we were staying on DVC points. We were very disappointed with the wait times and were more upset when we learned that some restaurants were still accepting walk-ins despite running 30+ minutes behind. This was our first trip when free dining was offered and the first time we've waited over 10 minutes for ADRs. Overall we were happy with the meals and service we received, but doubt we will be going during free dining anytime soon.

A breakdown of our wait times:

We waited well over an hour for 1900 Park Fare. We would have cancelled except I had a custom cake made for DD's 1st birthday. We also waited over 45 minutes for WCC with a 7:00P ADR and Crystal Palace for breakfast, 40 minutes at Garden Grill, 20 minutes at LTT and ended up cancelling LeCellier because they were 30 minutes behind an hour before our ADR time. At that point we were hungry and tired of waiting.

We had very minimal waits for CRT, Akershus, Teppan Edo, Chef Mickey's, O'hana (10:50A ADR), 50 PTC, Tusker House (8:00A ADR), and Boma.

We had no problems with our dining last week.

Our longest wait was about 20 minutes at CRT on the 20th. We were seated early at Cape May Cafe, Boma, LeCellier and Chef Mickey's. We were even able to change our time and be seated later at Kona's on Friday. But I will say that they had a long wait for Ohana's on Friday for Breakfast.

We too were there last week and of the 4 character meals (3 BF and 1 dinner) Tusker House had the longest wait at about 30 minutes on 9/20. At 8:40 am this was the latest ADR breakfast we had scheduled. CP and Ohana's breakfasts were at 8:00 am and 8:30 am, respectively with about 5 minute waits a piece. However, there were tons of folks waiting for their tables as we were exiting the restaurant around 9:30 - 10:00. The waiting area at Ohana's was chaotic on 9/22 as we were leaving but there were lots of empty tables inside the restaurant :confused3

Our Chef Mickey's dinner was scheduled for 5:00 pm and we arrived about 10 minutes early. We were seated almost immediately, but again, there was chaos in the waiting room as we exited the restaurant around 6:30 pm.

I think the key is to get the earliest ADRs for each meal possible during free dining to ensure your wait is not long.
