We just got back from a magical Disney World vacation (3 am this morning-so I may ramble). We visited from December 13th through the 23rd, 8 Disney days, 2 Universal Days. Nothing, no matter how much you plan (thanks DIS), or look at pictures, can truly describe the size of this land, it is vast compared to our two little parks in California. We did almost everything we had planned to do, with one major exception, we just could not find a way to stay up for Illuminations, for which I am truly sad, but we had a fantastic time.

We did 2 ½ days at the MK (including a Xmas party), 2 ½ days at Epcot (including Candlelight Processional), 1 day at HS, and two ½ days at AK (wish I would have scheduled more time there (we loved it). Crowds the first week were not bad, second week, MK and Epcot were packed. Touring is so different than Disneyland, with fewer rides per park, but we found plenty to do, just a little more walking.

The Magic Bands worked almost perfectly, minor adjustments to biometrics a few times were the only glitches. We stayed three nights at Saratoga Springs (ok), two days at Loews Royal Pacific Resort (very nice), and then our last five days at Animal Kingdom Lodge (outstanding). Renting points for the two Disney Resorts was very simple and very cost effective-highly recommended (we saved around 50% of rack rates).

Minor travel rant-pretty disappointed in both American and United Airlines-5 ½ hour flights from Sacramento and not even a bag of peanuts-wow. Wish Jet Blue had a straight flight. Second rant-cell reception a bit spotty in the World-we took some pretty circuitous routes to some of the parks via Google/Bing/Apple maps and AKL lodge is a bit out by its lonesome (we used a rental car for most of the trip).

We found all of the parks to be pretty darn clean and cheery, all CM’s seemed very friendly and eager to help. The ride queues for the most part are superior to Disneyland, the rides are generally the same or a little inferior. I give a slight nod to the WDW HM and BTMRR. One thing I would say, and sorry about this, but general attention to details is a bit lower than what we are accustomed to through our rosy-colored Disneyland goggles. Photo pass photographers were not as abundant as we had hoped, especially at Epcot, but overall a good value (340 pics in 7 actual park days-with some nice added magic shots and videos).

The restaurants were all pretty good, much better selections than we are accustomed to. We ate at all three AKL restaurants and they were all outstanding-best bread service-Sanaa, best desserts-Boma, best entrees-Jiko. I think overall, Narcossee’s just edged out Jiko as our best overall meal (amazing views of fireworks and electric water pageant a deciding factor-food slightly better at Jiko).

Two days was plenty for Universal for us (with front of the line). The Harry Potter stuff, especially Diagon Alley were purely amazing-wow.

Ok, I have rambled on a bit. I will do a real trip report in a few weeks after I go through the 4,578 photos I took (which is actually fairly restrained for me for this many days) to find some good ones. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone.

Wonderful, glad you had a blast. I was especially interested in the differences from DL to WDW. Our next Disney vacation will be to California. Also good tip with renting DVC points. Glad to hear it is quite easy, i heard it could save but wasnt sure about ease of use.
Does it get you in for EMH then?
How does that all work with MDE?
Did you rent direct from someone or use a service?

Second rant-cell reception a bit spotty in the World

This is something you probably could have fixed on your own. Most people don't know there is 2 things that do not auto-update on your phone that is specific to where you are and your carrier. Every phone has them and generally they are buried somewhere in the settings options (in android phones they will be in the system update option in settings. older non-smart style phones a lot of times it's in the about section of settings, but you might have to look around.).

First is "Update PRL". This is short for "Preferred roaming list". It's a list of cell towers that your carrier allows your phone to connect too, and which are considered roaming and which aren't. If you ever notice your bars a little low or spotty connections, update it, even if your at home. Especially common as networks upgrade to newer faster speeds or at times of natural disasters as the sharing of towers changes a lot.

The second is "Update Profile". This is the profile for how the phone should function, also provided by your carrier. Being from california, they have more strict mobile device battery usage laws and sometimes (not always) when you update the profile your phone will act completely different. The catch 22 is it might work worse, or it might drain the battery faster. generally if updating prl doesn't help me then I also try the profile and usually it makes it usable.

The last is to just call them up. every mobile phone (in the us), if you call 611 will connect you to the "support team" at your carrier. If you tell them the situation "on vacation, bad coverage" first they can take a look but they will trigger both of the above upgrades to happen on your phone the second you hang up..

Always keep in mind, there's weird timers and thing and if your phone is chronically doing bad, try restarting it.

It works just as if you were any guest staying onsite.

I was able to link everything together through My Disney Experience, pretty easy to do once you have all the confirmation numbers from the rental company. Dining reservations and FP+ also very easy to link and change to the account.

We used a service for renting the points (I think they advertise here, but it starts with a D).

Sort of. But not always. My phone was originally a Verizon phone, but was unlocked and I now use it on T-Mobile. So lots of little shortcuts don't actually work.

Sounds like you had a great trip, Chris! I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your shots from the World!

Good to know, thanks for the tips.

Sounds like a great trip! Nice to see another AK fan! We spent two partial days there this summer, and still wanted more time there!

Interested as well in your comparison to DL, since I would love to try DL someday.
