Just a thought...

We are going downtown (Chicago) to see the fireworks tonight. To avoid the crowds afterward, and to enjoy a mini vacation, we are staying overnight at the Congress Plaza Hotel. As I am getting ready this morning, I'm dreading the thought of walking into the room and thinking of my DVC, but I cannot really afford anything better. Then I had a thought. With the fuel crunch and airline prices going skyhigh, maybe its time for a mini-DVC in all the major cities of American. San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Milwaukee, New York, etc. A chain of timeshares where you can vacation in your own backyard. Maybe not villas, but rooms with spectacular views, roof top restaurant, a pool, fridge, microwave - like a studio perhaps. Would it work? I certainly would go there in the summer - maybe even in the winter/fall for shopping.

We live in Atlanta, but we will go to the Four Seasons, Ritz, or Peachtree Plaza for a night as a "getaway" when there's an event in the city (or birthday/anniversary) - and the Ritz has great special events around the holidays. But - a DVC would not appeal to me because there are such great hotel deals if you watch travelzoo or bid on Priceline - we can get the Peachtree Plaza for well under 100$ a night. Travelzoo always has super-deals to 5 stars in Chicago, NY, Washington DC - etc. With the economy tanking - I think the deals will only get sweeter and they'll accept lower Priceline bids.

Now - IF DVC offered resort use for owners the way Marriott does - and buying in meant I could use the resort's recreation/fitness center/pools 365 days a year- I'd buy a local DVC in a heartbeat.
