My SIL is sending her baby to school tomorrow for the very first time. He is autistic, and is starting school at age 3! Can you imagine?!?!

She is a lurker over here on the DIS, and she needs your thoughts, prayers, AND pixie dust so she can make it through the day!

:D

Good wishes and all kinds of pixie dust on their way for your nephew & SIL. I do hope he thrives, is he going to a private or public pre-school? The teachers I've known that work with special kids have always been fantastic :) I think he'll do great!

Up until i married my Dh in October, i worked in a pre-school program for developmentally delayed and autistic pre-schoolers aged 2-5yo. I loved my program and the kids in it. And believe me, the right program will do wonders for your SIL's son.
It may seem early to start him out, but believe me, it is much better to start him out as young as they can. In my program as long as we had parents who followed through on enforcing what we did in our class, the kids all showed remarkable progress. 3 of the kids i worked with are now assimilated into regular classrooms and doing very well. I was just an aide in my program, but i still got to do lots of hands on stuff with the kids, and I learned quite a bit of stuff over the 4 yerars i spent there. If my Dh did not work for the Navy and live in VA I would have stayed.

I wish your SIL's family the best of luck

CBRorBust' s sister. :wave2: Just relax, take a deep breath. :) You both will do great.  for you both.

Best wishes, along with a prayer, all will go well. And if you have the time, stop by, say hello, let us know how all went. Once more,

Dan

   It'll be ok, honestly.

When I decided in September to send my twins to school 2 days a week, for 2.5 hours each day, mind you. After I sent them in the school I had to run back to my car, I cried like you wouldnt believe. I called DH, I was hysterical, the only words he could understand was " the babies" and "School". He thought there was something horribly wrong, when he realized I was being a crying buffoon, he hung up on me:rolleyes:

I can laugh now, it was funny. But they love school!!

Good luck to your SIL. I have a cousin who is autistic and I believe when she started school, it did wonders for her.:)

 to your SIL.

Booya loads of Pixie Dust coming your way!!!!

I can't even imagine sending my 5 yr old this year for kind, let alone an autistic child. I know so much about autism and have a friend who has a son with it. She is writing a book and I can give you her email for support if needed. I am sure she would love to help your sister in anyway.

Thoughts and prayers on the way. I know what your SIL is going through, I have a special needs child and it was tough sending her to school. DD is now in 1st grade and things are great, but my nerves were on edge for quite a while.

 for CBRorBust's SIL

Melinda

PS - Lewski709 - I love BooYa. My DD and I are big Kim Possible fans!!!! (Is that where you got it from??)

My son has been in school since he was 3 due to severe low vision. The results are amazing 3 years later as to how much his skills have improved, and the gap between him and his peers has closed significantly. The teachers will take care of the little one. They know how much a child can take and will not go overboard. Just enjoy the 2.5 hours of alone time.

CBR's sister, good luck to you.

I have a 7yo with Aspergers Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder. He started school at 4 (but wasn't diagnosed until the middle of 1st grade).

You're doing the right thing by having your son start school as soon as possible...it really is hard for you, but will help him in many ways.

Feel free to PM if you have any questions. Good luck to your family.

Suzanne

Thanks so much for all the thoughts, prayers and pixie dust.

We made it through the first day. Well I was the only one having the hard time dealing with it. He walked in a started playing right away. He cried when I left but then he moved on to playing again. Me on the other hand got to the car and cried for about 20 minutes of and on at the thought of it all. But tomorrow will be much easier, Right? I know this is what he needs and that is what keeps me going.

Thanks again!!
