When my extended family of 7-10 goes out to eat at a nice restaurant Disney or not, we usually get the whole 18% automatically added on to our bill. Not a bad idea sure but I feel like the server ALWAYS deserves more when it comes to big groups, especially my big group.

I'll tell you now that I have class and I am fully able to understand that tipping is very very very much appreciated by the server. I know that big groups SUCK to wait on because not only are you forced to remember twice as many orders as you're used to, you also watch many more drinks and cater to many more needs. Not only that, you're usually not caring for any other tables and therefore your nightly income can be severely decreased when 2 hours of your night is based on one table's mere 10% or lower tip.

I just want to able to tip 25% if I want to, or even just more than 18%. I know it's the best system to weed out the cheap-o's but I just needed to vent!

Thanks for listening.

Who is stopping you from tipping 25 percent? Basically from your rant (as you put it) your basically saying anyone who doesnt tip over 18 percent doesnt have class and is cheap? Just my opionion but you seem to have an agenda. Im gonna bet your a server somewhere and not that there is anything wrong with that but to say people are classless for not tipping over 18 percent is classless in itself. (imho) If you think it sucks to serve large groups then you probably shouldnt be serving larger groups and wouldnt deserve that kind of gratuity since you think your customers suck.

Meh, I used to be a server a long time ago, but that has nothing to do with it. I'm irritated when my husband goes to pay for the mother's day lunch his family and I had, 18% is already added on when we had already planned on something different.

I already stated thatt although the system is kind of flawed, it's the best because the servers do deserve at least 18% for large groups imo. I know I can always slip another $20 or whatever... oh well though, I'm over it.

And another thing, I loved serving big groups. Mainly because they were a big groups of businessmen who I could flirt with. My cute little 18 year old self would charm those boys, it was pretty fun. In general big groups are fun though but some of them do suck. I was afterall a very requested server at the classy restaurant I worked at so I dealt with a lot of professionals thankfully.

Well, I do want to give a shoutout to our server du jour Amelie. One of the best and my mother in law is one of those customers... you know, never satisfied. She was very satisfied. Amelie was great at one of the busiest restaurants on Mother's Day in the Pac NW. Luckily we didn't follow the 18% rule and added more!

I'm still not sure why you felt you couldn't leave more than 18%. Nothing was stoping you from adding cash to the table or even adding an additional tip to the ticket (unless there was not a tip line, which would be very odd since every restaurant I've ever been to has had a tip line even if the tip is included).

Your post did sound pretty judgemental almost classest, elitest. 18% is a very legit tip and people shouldn't be made to feel low class or cheap if that's what they choose to leave. Its really not my job to compensate servers based on how hard their jobs are. To me tips are a way of saying thank you - not a way of evaluating a server

I'm not sure I understand why you're upset that they added 18% when you'd already planned on something different. Did the restaurant tell you you couldn't add additional tip when they ran the credit card? Is that the part that was upsetting? I can't see a restaurant doing that. And if you were paying cash it would've been a non issue because you could add whatever you wanted.

:confused3 :confused3 :confused3

This is my rant.

Why would anyone feel that they cannot give more than is "suggested"? It's fairly simple to do. Your tip is included in the total. But you want to leave an extra couple of dollars (or more). You put your payment in the bill holder and when your server comes back, he tell him that you would like to include X more because of the wonderful job he did.

Result? The server gets what you wanted him to get, and he knows that he did an outstanding job for the table.

Otherwise, he has absolutely no idea that he did things well.

I get so tired of people saying "oh, that automatic 18% will save me money because I normally tip 20%". SO TIP 20%!!!

This isn't the first time this poster has made a thread or a reply about this issue. :confused3

It sure is the first time about THIS issue!

I know I can leave more, can't anyone accept that it's a rant and leave it at that????!!!!???? I wasn't really looking for someone to tell me I suck, maybe a that's unfortunate and we'll both move on...

And I really DID NOT want it to become ANOTHER tipping debate.

I'm not sure why you thought that this would not turn into another tipping debate, especially since you kindly pointed out that you have class bc you understand tipping is appreciated and tip more than the 18% that is already added to the bill. I don't think a person's classiness is based on how they choose to tip a server.

You are also venting about something that is a non-issue since you can increase the tip above 18%.

If you are just venting then why would post it on a public message board where people are going to respond, especially went it is regarding an already sensitive subject.

I had a group of 20 last week - I just added an extra [big] tip on the bill. No problem and the server was very happy! Can't you just do that too?????

Although I am not going to question the OP's intent, because I don't know it, it seems obvious to me that this is one thread that could easily be turned into another tipping thread. I also would not be surprised to see it locked real soon.

Its not going to be much longer before people will label you cheap or classless if you dont tip 30, 40 or even 50 percent. When is it ever going to stop? It seems one person has to outdo the next person and everyone else wil just be labled. Waiting for the post that says if you cant afford to tip 100 percent then you probably should eat counter service.

Actually, a gratuity of at least 110% is de rigeur in better society. Those who cannot afford to do so should confine themselves to dining at popcorn carts out of view of real people. :snooty:
