I had jury duty two weeks ago. When I first got the summons, there was a form you could fill out to ask for a postponement due to travel plans or other commitments. Other times I've had to report, the judge asks for hardship excuses first (lack of childcare, etc.). This time, it was only going to be a one-day trial. The judge said he wouldn't be asking about hardships at the beginning but you could bring it up if you were called to be questioned.
They called 18 people to come up to the jury box in the first round. I was number 18. The judge explained the case which was posession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He said 4 of the 5 witnesses would be police officers. He asked if anyone had a bias toward or against police officers. I raised my hand and said I might. My dad was a deputy sheriff in our county for 25 years. My uncle was chief of police in a nearby city. My mom was a nurse in the jail for over 20 years. I worked in the jail as a medical clerk when I was in college. Other people said they knew police officers, lawyers or had strong opinions on guns. Finally, after lunch, the lawyers were allowed to start excusing people. The defense attorney kicked me out pretty quickly! Those officers would be testifying against his client. And while I think I could evaluate their testimony fairly, he still didn't want a former cop's kid sitting there! It turned out to be an interesting day and a nice break from work!
