Never had it. But just as my wife and I had made plans for our summer getaway to Florida and lined up guests for a visit, lo and behold, my first ever jury summons. Oh well. Looking for cheap airfare.

You can ask for a postponement and they will gladly reschedule you in a month that works better for you. Ct will reschedule 9 months from your original date if that is what you need.

Yes, you can reschedule here too. Just call them up and say you will be out of town that week and ask to be rescheduled. :thumbsup2

I was called for jury duty (six month term) right after I bought airfare for a trip to Disney. I just explained the situation to the judge. He had me give the clerk our vacation dates and I was excused from jury duty on those dates. No biggie.

Yeah...I agree with the others...it shouldn't be a big deal to change.

You can postpone a jury summons.

Also, some states don't send a jury summons by certified and/or signature required mail. Therefore, there's no proof that you actually received it. New York is one of those states. Jury summons usually get tossed in the trash around here.

I did jury duty once when I was 19 (I'm 23 now) and it was a huge waste of time and I feel no desire to ever do it again.

I see jury duty as our civic duty but I hate being summoned. I never even get questioned. The four times I have gone, we watched a movie on the responsibility of the jury. I sat for 8 hours, an hour off for lunch on an uncomfortable bench and never got called. Most of the people there never got called. That is the worst part. I think that they keep a jury on hand so they can plea bargain the cases and if they aren't successful, they can seat a jury.

WOW! How unbelievable.

Its probably a good thing. Would YOU want someone who felt that way on your jury?

You're right. Some kinds of people aren't smart enough to understand things, and therefore shouldn't be on a jury, making important decisions.

I had jury duty two weeks ago. When I first got the summons, there was a form you could fill out to ask for a postponement due to travel plans or other commitments. Other times I've had to report, the judge asks for hardship excuses first (lack of childcare, etc.). This time, it was only going to be a one-day trial. The judge said he wouldn't be asking about hardships at the beginning but you could bring it up if you were called to be questioned.

They called 18 people to come up to the jury box in the first round. I was number 18. The judge explained the case which was posession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He said 4 of the 5 witnesses would be police officers. He asked if anyone had a bias toward or against police officers. I raised my hand and said I might. My dad was a deputy sheriff in our county for 25 years. My uncle was chief of police in a nearby city. My mom was a nurse in the jail for over 20 years. I worked in the jail as a medical clerk when I was in college. Other people said they knew police officers, lawyers or had strong opinions on guns. Finally, after lunch, the lawyers were allowed to start excusing people. The defense attorney kicked me out pretty quickly! Those officers would be testifying against his client. And while I think I could evaluate their testimony fairly, he still didn't want a former cop's kid sitting there! It turned out to be an interesting day and a nice break from work!
