We recently went on the Jungle Cruise for our first time. We really enjoyed it. We were wondering if anyone could answer a question that has been bugging us for awhile - does the jungle cruise operator actually steer the boat? If they do, our driver must have been doing it for a long time, she never even had to look to see where she was steering. Silly question - but we were wondering! :sail:

Thanks!!

Nope. They don't actually steer the boat. I believe they are on a track.

I went on the Keys to the Kingdom Tour and we were told that they are on a track but the captain can control the speed. Hence, sometimes people do get sprayed by the elephants.

I know I've seen pics of JC without water. I remember seeing a pic of a JC boat with 2 wheels in the center line of the boat (1-bow to 1-stern) which ran in a deep trough, but I don't remember a "track". This pic from Disney Architecture shows a "rail/track". The CM's do control the speed of the boat.

when we were there last november, there was a logjam at the end. our captain kept double-checking that the end of the boat was beyond the elephant's reach. she even came out of character to ensure the people in the back knew it was important that they were out of reach.

Many of the skippers use the steering wheel of the boat although they may do corny things like spin the wheel as fast as they can in the direction that the boat will go next. (The wheel is not connected to anything.)

Corey Sandler, author of some of the Econoguide tour books, and noting that many Disney boats run on tracks, "Unlike the Liberty Square river boat, the ferry boats from the parking lot (TTC) to Magic Kingdom are free floating."

It is also why the water is died that very dark brown color, so that you can't see the tracks (or the bases of the animatronics).
