What a wonderful week it was. From the first moment we boarded the Magic until we stepped back into reality - it was, well, Magic!

My family booked our 4th Disney cruise for 6/9/09 back in January 08. On board from my family was myself, Amanda, my husband, Ed, my mother, Nanny and my daughter, Abigail who is 9. We booked the cruise 18 months in advance, expecting to change the date as we go closer, but ended up going on our original date. We booked two rooms cat 9. I kept an eye on the rates and when the Florida Resident rates were introduced, we changed to a Cat 12 and saved $1200. 45 days before the cruise, we were upgraded to a Cat 9! What great pixie dust landed on us!

My daughter, Abigail is 9 and although you would never know it, she is somewhat shy. In an effort to get her more comfortable, I joined the cruise meet and sent some PM's to the parent's of some other 9 year old girls. (PM = private message - I learned you first had to make 10 posts so I went onto different subjects and added some thoughts!) It worked out great! Abigail (who insisted on being called "Abi" during the cruise), found three friends; Gina, Izzie & Jeanne Marie (prounounced "Jon") The girls began to email each other and Abi even got Izzie to join Club Penguin. By the time the cruise was ready to launch - she had 3 best friends. During the cruise they met more kids but the foursome stuck to together throughout. I highly recommend getting on the boards beforehand and joining your cruise meet.

Well I am off to make dinner, next I will talk about "Family of The Week" and the "shaver" incident!

I'm looking forward to the rest of your review.:thumbsup2

Hi Amanda,

I was on the cruise with you and a Junebug. I'm excited to read your trip report! My daugher also met some great friends from the cruise meet boards and we had a great time with the fish extenders. Thanks for the beachballs

I'm back and glad to see some familiar names! I miss my online buddies! Well before I get back into the trip report - I have to confess..I am addicted to Disney Cruising. Yesterday I had to ask my boss for a couple days off (July 9 & 10)..for what you may ask? I will tell. I AM GOING ON ANOTHER DISNEY CRUISE!! One of my cruise meet friends, Rose and her daughter Gina and my daughter and myself decided to go on the Summer at Sea! We are hoping to meet Corbin Blu and some of the members of Sonny with a Chance. We are surprising the girls - so hush is the word.

Well dinner is almost done so I must sign off - I promise to get the shaver incident and the family of the week on soon!

I'm soooo jealous but excited for you :woohoo: You have a lucky daughter! I will look forward to hearing about the Summer at Sea and the Disney celebrities you will meet. If I had the chance, I'd be back on the Disney ship too, also if I were closer (can't wait 'til the Wonder comes to the West coast). What was your favorite resaurant during the cruise? For my kids I think it was the ice cream station by the pool! In fact tonight the kdis were asking for dessert and wanted ice cream, we said, "What do you think this is? The Disney Cruise?! You don't get ice cream every night here." They were not too happy, but we gave in and let them have a popciscle.

I had a goal, a noble goal. A goal any Disney mom would understand. A goal which would allow my family to be welcomed with open arms, dine in high style, sleep in a blissful state, and be treated in a way in which we would like to become accustomed.

The pursuit of this goal was not an easy one. It required skill, cunning, money, and time. In addition, it required and the ability to talk my family into wearing attire in a similar likeness of white, red and black. It mandated compulsory cooperation and good deal of persuasion.

I wanted to be….no NEEDED to be chosen as The Family of the Week!

I planned endlessly for the moment when the cast member would see my adorable family all dressed in black shorts, while shirts with Minnie Mouse on them and carrying matching Castaway Club bags. As I walked up to the counter to check in, one cast member would make eye contact with me and with a huge smile, waive me to her counter. Upon arrival at the counter, I too would be smiling. The clouds outside the terminal would suddenly go away and a large ray of sun would illuminate my family. The cast member would then say, in a perfect English accent…”Good morning, you have been chosen as Disney Cruise Line’s Family of the week”. We would then be whisked away to the front of the line and all the cast members would smile at us, knowing we were the chosen ones. We would smile and waive (our fingers would be held tight together like Barbie’s) to all the other families hoping to be treated like royalty. I would be able to look around and see the eyes of my family misting in sheer joy. We would enter the large ears and cross the gangplank. Photographers would take our pictures. And just as we placed our tender glass slippered feet onto the ship, we would hear those inspiring words, “Welcome the Young family with Nanny Rees”.

I was to be a glorious moment. One, which would be followed by a huge buffet in our honor. Then a show with dancing followed by those wonderful, incredible, and distinctive seven notes. We would then find our rooms to be spectacular and then discover free room service. On top of that, we would have Spa products like shampoo and conditioner, soap and lotion. Our beds would be turned down with chocolates and love. We would walk about the grand ocean liner as if we owned the place. We would watch as dancers and singers worked to entertain us. When we sat down for a meal, an entertaining and thoughtful waiter would put my napkin directly upon my very reduced lap (remember this is a dream plan). We would dine on lobster and steak, cream and chocolate. We would walk the deck, all four of us hand in hand smiling as we watched the perfect sunset. My daughter would smile and tell me she loved me. My husband would admire my ability to create the perfect family week. My mother’s smile would be filled with pride and joy. Life would be wonderful.

In order to do this, I had implemented my 3-part plan. First, a little manipulation. I had to exaggerate the benefits of being picked first family to my husband, so he would cooperate with my scheme. Second, I brought everyone to Downtown Disney to find the perfect outfits. My mother, my daughter and I picked matching Minnie Mouse shirts; my husband picked a Disney shirt with the same colors. Oh we were a handsome family. After looking at all the Disney merchandise I worried we may not be “Disney’ed” enough. I then opted for hats, pins, necklaces, and earrings and to top if off a brand new Mickey Mouse watch (I told you it costs money). I felt such anticipation as I put down my credit card for our matching wardrobes.

The third part of my plan did not go as well as it could have. While I awoke early and gently stirred my family with a rousing chorus of the theme to the original Mouseketeers show, they were not that easily awoken. I then proceeded to begging and finally threats. My plan was still working though because I woke them up an hour before they really had to be up! (Insert evil laugh here) I quickly took a shower, styled my hair and made up my face. All the while I was checking on the status of my very tired family. Sometime during the morning, we lost the hour I had gained by getting everyone up early, but I was still on target and things were going my way. Before I know it all the luggage was loading in the car, we had on our matching outfits, big smiles and glorious dreams of what lay ahead. No one could stop us now!

We hit the road and just as we neared the port & could smell the sweet sea cologne and bask in the beautiful shoreline sun, my husband announced that he forget to pack his shaver and no way was he using a plastic handled one!!! He pulled across two lanes of traffic, exited the highway and stopped at the closest Wal-Mart. He parked the car and took the keys with him. He ran into the store and left us in the hot car for almost 20 minutes. I thought to myself: “You Wicked Brat. Look what you have done. I’m melting, I’m melting. Oh what a world…who would have thought a good husband like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness (taken from and then slightly altered: The Wizard of Oz – just before the witch melts.) He returned to the car and gave me the Clint Eastwood look, you know the one – it says, “Go ahead, make my day.” It was then when I was deciding how I should make my husband pay for his atrocious behavior that I looked at the car’s clock. I froze, unable to believe my eyes. I stared at the clock, torn between disbelief and utter panic. It was 11:00 A.M. Not 10 A.M.

My mind was spinning. I shouted to anyone within hearing distance “tell me it is not so!” I slowly looked at my husband and asked him what his watch said. For a moment, h looked deep into my eyes and when he broke eye contact long enough to look down at his watch. I could see beads of sweat forming on his forehead. He studied his watch, looked back up at me and said, “11 AM.” I turned and for a moment the car grew very long and wide – it was as if I was turning in slow motion and the car was growing and I would never be able to look into the back seat and see my daughter and my mother looking up at me. I asked them, “What time is it?” My daughter, sensing this was a very dramatic moment showed me her watch and said “11 AM” and my mother confirmed the wicket truth. I then looked down at my brand new Mickey Mouse watch. I could see the castle over his right shoulder. He was facing to the left but looking directly at me. He had a big smile. He wore red pants and large yellow shoes. His arms were crossed – almost as if he were teasing me. I looked at the slightly silver hands. The large one was where it should be – straight up at the top, pointing to a not so hidden Mickey. The little one was evil - it was pointing at 10. I reached into my purse and pulled out my overpriced 8GB I-phone. It confirmed the time at 11 AM.

My heart sank and I cried out “oh know, how could it be!” Then in my head I heard the strangest little voice. It was happy and gleeful. It was full of fun and laughed in such a familiar way. It was Mickey Mouse in my head and he was laughing. It made me giggle. Soon my very relieved family was also giggling. Before long it was laughter and then before I knew it were at the port, ready to embark on a glorious seven nights grand cruise!

We walked up to the counter with our matching outfits, hats, Disney pins and earrings and I proudly wore my Mickey Mouse watch, leaving the time the same. But guess what? Somehow we were the family of the week! Not the official one – but, as we walked up to the counter to check in, the cast member made eye contact with me and with a huge smile and waived me to his counter. Upon arrival at the counter, I too was smiling. The cast member then said in a perfect Orlando accent, “Good morning, welcome home.” I looked around and saw the eyes of my family, misting with joy. After walking around and getting my pager for the kids’ club, we entered the large ears and crossed the gangplank. Photographers took our pictures. And just as we placed our sandaled feet onto the ship, we heard those inspiring words, “Welcome for the fourth time, the Young family with Nanny Rees”.

It was a glorious moment and was soon followed by a huge buffet. When we went to our rooms, we found Spa products and the best room steward ever. During the week we walked about the grand ocean liner as if we owned the place. We watched dancers and singers as they entertained us. When we sat down for a meal, our entertaining and thoughtful waiter placed my napkin directly upon my very amplified lap (now in reality). We dined on lobster and steak, cream and chocolate. And on the last night, my daughter and I walked the deck while we watched the sunset. She took my hand and looked up at me with those big beautiful brown/green/blue/gold eyes and said “Mom, can I go back to the Lab now?”

OK, perhaps not the ending you were expecting…but the truth is the truth.

Here is the picture from that moment in the sunset.

Hi krisanm67 - My daughter and I are both very lucky to go again. If not for Rose (Degrapevine) whom we met on the cruise, we would not be going. She had the same idea and we are rooming together with our girls.

My favorite resturant...hmmm had to be Palo Brunch. Other than that they were all good. I liked the food in each one but I liked the design of Lumiere's the best.

Glad to hear you gave in on the ice cream - I have been giving in too much with Abigail - need to get her off the cruise in her mind!

Abs,

I'm so jealous -hope you all have a "Wonderful" time and meet lots of Disney Stars- Loving your trip report.

Hi Amanda,
Enjoying your TR! You mentioned you first booked 2 Cat 9s, and then went GTY.

As a family of 5, we book two rooms too. I'm afraid to go GTY, b/c they can't guaranty the rooms will be next to each other, or even close by (even now, to upgrade on our Aug cruise we will only be able to get gty right now). Just wondering your experience with this.:confused3

Thanks!:goodvibes

How fun to room with them - it is so nice that you've become friends and the girls too. The ultimate sleepover :) I liked the looks of Lumiere's also. The food at all of them were good, and Palo's food the best. I LOVED that portabello appetizer at Palo. My least favorite was Animator's Palate, but that may have been because of were our table was located. Our waiters were really super too. I enjoyed your "Family of the Day" post and find myself looking forward to the next one. Have a great week :yay:

Loving your report and looking forward to more!

AND what fun to be headed back so soon AS A SURPRISE and with the chance to meet a Disney Channel star or two! WOW!!! :cool1:

We're cruisin' July 18 to Tortola, but my two girls (9 and 11) STILL had me entering that darn Summer at Sea contest in hopes of winning a second cruise this summer! Alas, it was not meant to be so we'll have to be happy with our one (like that's gonna be hard to do!)!

Hi PoohJen,

We booked two rooms and were upgraded to the Cat9 side by side - not adjoining. We went on the Wonder January 08 and we booked two rooms, right after we booked, a frend of mine booked one room for she and her DD and DH. They were updgraded to a 9 and we slept soundly in our 12's - side by side, not adjoining.

I started my next part but cannot finish tonight! I went to the dentist today and he numbed me up so bad that I bit the inside of my cheek and my tongue. On top of that, my dog would not go jogging with me tonight because is it 99 degrees outside and my cat threw up on my shoes.

As a result, I am going to curl up with a nice book and have a little nap. Let's see, i think I will read "Passporters Guide to the Disney Cruise Line and it's Ports of Call" hahaha

Good night

Oh, all right we'll wait :rotfl: Hope you are feeling better after relaxing after a rough time :flower3:

Okay....When you got to the cat part I decided I would give you a break and wait....LOL

During the June Bugs Cruise, I learned two of life’s rules: 1. Snickers bars are great. Not only do they look good and taste good, they go along way when you want to make strangers smile and 2. DIS Friends make the cruises even better!

You may WONDER how it is I came upon the first one of life’s little lessons. I found it on the Dis threads. The source of Disney understanding; the well of my Disney knowledge. Before I took my 4th cruise, I decided to review all the good things on this site. I was amazed, I was shocked, I am HOOKED! Some might call it an addiction. (Hi, my name is Amanda and I am a Dis aholic).

One of the hints I read is that CM’s (Cast members) like candy, chocolate candy. Well that went on my list of things to do before boarding. And I had a list, a big list..it included all the important things: clothes, shoes, hairdryer, shoes, clothes, shoes, hair spray, make up, shoes, over the door hanger, shoes, the Fish extender, and Chocolate bars. I first saw some Snickers in our local Grocer, Publix, on sale 2 bags for one. I quickly bought both bags and brought them to work to “hide” until the cruise. That failed miserably. I knew they were there and gave them away like candy (pun intended). When I returned, the sale was no more. I searched for another sale – no luck. I went to the dollar store, to Big Lots and even checked out the other grocer’s – no, no, no no. And I refused to overpay for them because that one day, Publix had them on sale! (I am not stubborn, I am not)

Costco, to the rescue. A couple of days before the cruise I ended up at Costco and bought 48 of the large bars on the cheap. I had to bring my rolling computer bag to bring them onboard. I was just going to pack them in my suitcase until one of the smarter members on my cruise meet (thanks to Suz D – real name Suz – if you can believe that), asked me how I planned to get them onboard without the candy bars melting (I’m melting, I’m melting!) I decided to bring my rolling laptop bag – worked like a charm.

So there I was, onboard, with the real treasure. The one Captain Hook and the gang were seeking when they declared a mutiny at sea and took Minnie and Mickey away! I started giving them away slowly – to the man who brought me room service coffee my first morning on board. He was so excited that the next morning I gave him his tip and 2 Snickers. He confided in me that he ate them before he even walked back to the kitchen. Each morning I got room service right on time, with a big smile! That is when I knew I was onto something. I handed a bunch to my room steward – he smiled even bigger and left me extra shampoo and conditioner every night. I gave them to the men and women cleaning the bathrooms, to the ones handing out the wipes on the way to eat breakfast at Topsiders, to the entertainment crew after we played games, to our waiter and assistants, the shopkeepers and the photographers. On the last day, I handed out the rest to the men and women wearing yellow cleaning the decks. Each time I received a surprised smile and a big thank you. It was great to be able to thank people in a little different way. I managed to give all 48 away and did not eat one! I was so proud of myself that the last night I ordered Mickey Mouse Ice Cream bars from room service – and gave out the last one to the man who brought them to my room.

The second of life’s lessons was an unexpected surprise. Oh I expected to have a great time and I expected to meet some nice people. I even believed we might have a drink or two with some of the DISfolks. WRONG! I spent almost the entire cruise with our new friends! My daughter Abi loved hanging out with Izzie, Jeanne and Gina. They were the four Mouseketeers! And I loved hanging with their parents. Izzie’s dad, Bodi was a riot. (Hi Bodi) and I loved hanging with Melanie (my Chelsea Lately buddy) we are even planning on a trip together soon. I was so excited to meet Julie (Shewhowmustbeobeyed) although it took me two days to find her! Lia (Irensin) is so sweet as is her daughter Libby and my cooking and future cruise roommate, Rose and her daughter Gina (Degrapevine). What a gang we were about the ship. There were so many people from the meet that I got to talk to – it was really great. There were so many good memories that I decided to put together the top 10.

10. Winning a spa treatment on the dance floor with Melanie! That girl can dance! (I forgot to use it)

9. Running into Julie on deck, sharing cookies and posting on Dis Discussion that we were at the moment, on the Magic!

8. Running into Jeanne in the elevator with her dad and seeing her smile when I asked her is she was Jeanne and then bringing her to meet Abi and Izzie.

7. Throwing a surprise birthday party for my mum with the gang! What a mess we made…

6. Hanging out on Castaway Cay!

5. Going to the Castaway Club party with Melanie and Randy and scoring rice crispy treats!

4. Having dinner with Izzie and Bodi along with a great family with three very sweet girls!
IMG_1863.jpg

3. Hanging with friends on the last night in Rockin Bar D – mostly when one of the CM’s dressed as a ballerina decided to flirt with my husband!

2. Finding out how fast Abi and Izzie ran from the stateroom to the restaurant when they found out the waiter made special arrangements for them to have the Swordfish again!

And the number one Disfriends memory….

The goodbye. Knowing that I would see bodi, Izzie, Melanie, Jeanne, Rose and Gina again. Knowing this because they were now not just DISfriends but real life friends.
