June 6-18, 2010 - BLT, BWV - Well Planned, Perfectly Executed!!

Having finished our 2 minutes family photo update, DSiL proceeded into the CR for her massage. The rest of us returned to our room to prepare for our lunch picnic at the BLT pool. This involved everyone changing into suits, and me packing the soft-sided cooler (used to bring down refrigerated items from home) to pack up sandwich fixings.

I don't have any pictures of our lunch table - but we manage to secure one under an umbrella, next to the refillable mug station and pool bar, which was convenient for cold drinks. Food was fine, but what my uncle used to call "Fill it up with regular."

The pool was a lot of fun, as evidenced by the pictures below.

DB makes a big splash - included here because I like what the water camera can do - capture the water in motion, creating a unique impression

After which we headed over to the CR pool. Basically, with a few exceptions, the pools are mostly the same, with variations on theming / view. We splashed, played, checked out the water slide, took some pictures, then returned to room. DB & DSiL have date night dinner at CG. The rest of us are monorailing and resort touring until we check out fireworks from our balcony tonight.

This post probably seems like a lot of family, and not enough Disney, but I included it here to highlight the fun of having a water camera. I had one throwaway film one which we used at SAB in the 90's - and I concluded that the picture quality was not worth repeating the experience. The current digital versions are great fun, high quality and allow me to capture segments of our vacation that were previously off limits for my SLR.

Although originally intended for Scuba Son (DS22), we have used on multiple occasions - such as Parasailing on Castaway Cay

.

After around 4 hours of swimming, sliding and splashing, it was time to get ready for the evening.

DB & DSiL headed to CG for Date Night Dinner; DH, ME +3 headed out for our first monorail ride and a scouting mission to explore other resort pools for future consideration, via the inter-hotel walkway:

p312790712-3.jpg

From the walkway, captured a point-in-time memory - a languid, long-shadows, people-relaxing, boats motoring moment - from the walkway:

p397558089-4.jpg

While waiting for the monorail, a look-back at the now completed BLT, through the outline of the omnipresent mouse:

p415822190-4.jpg

We stopped at the Polynesian, checked out the pool. For whatever reason, no pictures! Then , onto the GF lobby. For us, the GF lobby between 3-9 pm is a destination in itself. We all love music - and this is 6 solid hours of piano alternating with 6 piece dixie / swing / jazz band - in the nicest possible surroundings. DNc9 walked, looked around, and said "Oh, this is the FANCY place" - remembering, no doubt, their dinner with royalty (Park Fare) there four years ago.

p419288413-4.jpg

We checked out the pool (which they also remembered from 2006), took a few pictures and monorailed "home" to get ready for "fireworks from our balcony, again."

DNc's on the GF beach - liked the "sunlit corner"

Nightastic, from our 12th floor studio BLT balcony - no the greatest quality pictures, but shows what you can capture if you push your ISO setting all the way up, even if you don't have a tripod. Between the sunset and the fireworks, it would have been worth bringing a tripod, as a tripod would have been stable on the balcony. Next time!!

p250609751-3.jpg

p420674088-4.jpg

When the fireworks ended, I nudged DNc9 and pointed to the BLT portico, 12 stories below. "Hard to believe just 24 hours ago you were getting off the ME and we were watching the fireworks from down there, isn't it?" To which she sagely - or was it tiredly? - replied, "We did a LOT today." No, it was definitely "sagely."

To recap - 7 people, 17 hours, multiple venues and activities, no parks, no meltdowns, good food and wine - even some "relaxation.". Except for DB & DSiL Segway tour and date night dinner at CG - oh yes, and DH's cinnamon bun splurge at Ft Wilderess, no out of pocket (unplanned) money spent. For anything.

I think I am getting the hang of the "resort" side of a Disney vacation.

I am loving your trip report! I have enjoyed your dining pictures and look forward to seeing more of them. Your photos have convinced DH that we need to try Victoria and Albert's.

Funny with your CoB...I will make DH crazy trying to figure out that one, before I share your report with him! Thanks and keep them coming! Best wishes to your DH for a speedy recovery!

Hi, Ellen. I don't know if you remember me from last year's members cruise or not, my DH took a picture of you and your DH-with your camera- one day at the adult pool when we were all hanging out, but I swear, you take the most incredible pictures ever. They are just awesome.

Plus, I just love your TR's. They are very informative.

I hope everything is ok with your DH since you said you were pushing him around in a wheelchair. Nothing to serious hopefully.

This trip sounds so relaxing so far. Can't wait to hear about the rest of it. :flower3:

Did not know 1000HappyHaunts lived near. Your comment about
V & A twice - loved the pics. We have never been there. Our next trip is in October. Staying at BVC for the first time. Son is a Marathon runner. Daughter is in training.
HappyHaunts lives in Niagara-on-the-lake - according to her 2005 TR's. I live half way between the two. We used to go over to NotL very often - before 9/11, border delays, etc. My dad was a high school English teacher and we either went to the Shaw Festival or Stratford once a year. My parents used to go the Oban for anniversaries. We were members of Ft Niagara for years.

I thought about entering the Everest half marathon challenge, since it coincided with this trip. I am not a runner, but walk 3-5 miles a day and thought it would be fun. Ended up deciding it would take time away from family and filed it away for future reference. WDW seems to be adding more of them throughout the year. I've been down there during some other ones and they really pack the hotels with dedicated runners.

VnA - in just 2 "trip report days", we'll have the "combined two dinners in one week" report - stay tuned!
CoB - have fun with that!
DH Back - incision was nearly 13 inches on spine, 6 discs, 2 titanium rods. DH THOUGHT he knew pain before the surgery. He did NOT. He does NOW! I'd post a picture, but it would be interesting only to ortho-medical types. It was serious surgery.

Of course, I remember you!

DCL-DVC are famous for really getting to know each other - of course Mark & Mary are a big influence in making that happen. Sorry we won't be going this year, but we needed to take our "free" cruise for buying BLT on the LAST member cruise. We'll be doing that in Dec - couldn't really manage both, time-wise, in Fall. Maybe next year!

And here is the photo your husband took at the pool...

p433726534-3.jpg

Tom is recovering well - some set-backs, but that is a whole 'nother series of "hospital reports." Obviously, he won't be teaching karate for a few more weeks. In the meantime, DS 20, DS22 and I are teaching for him - after my day job, wherein I am working from home so that I can help DH when needed. I think I need a vacation! Well, writing a TR is the next best thing....... Glad to have you along for the ride/read.

A full day, starting with early opening. You can't beat the walk from BLT to MK. I don't have many pictures, as my hands were busy with the wheelchair, but the few I have...

We rode rides, listened to music, collected fastpasses for later, snacked at Harbor House, had lunch in room, then returned to MK, staying through fireworks.

These were "hand held" - you can get crisper shots with a tripod....

Loved your choices for the fireworks pics. Each pic the castle is a different color. Thanks ! Your vacation is looking great. I should do a TR
in October - I will.
Glad the surgery is over ( bet your Husband in more glad ) thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
I do like Niagara-on-the-Lake but I also think the Lewiston main street near Art Park is enjoyable. We live in the SouthTowns.
Waiting for more vacation update.

Great TR, amazing pictures!!! We leave in 2 weeks for BLT, and you are really getting me excitied.

Great pictures! :thumbsup2
Wow there was alot of people there, my DS son said on July 4th they closed the gates. Not sure if I could enjoy myself with that many people there.

Thanks for thoughts, prayers and future TR. We know Lewiston as well. I went to Stella Niagara for my first 2 years of high school (it closed), DH used to work at the Riverside Inn, while staying at DeChantel Hall (both are now something else). I've done a fair number of free,Tuesday night concerts (although not this year) - and am planning to see Bachman-Turner in August there with DS22!

Lucky you!!

I have yet to be at WDW during a "prime" season (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Easter). I hear the fireworks make it worth doing, at least once. We'll see!

Today was another one of those days that required its own worksheet.

DH and I got up fairly early to pack up the room, call bell service, and check out luggage for delivery to BWV check in later this same day. That was easy. We've done it before, but I still marvel how easy it is to change resorts.

Anyway, DH & I walked over to MK to get the bus to BWV. We figured, with all the buses arriving for opening, we were bound to catch one of many buses bound for a return run back to BWV. Silly me. Forgot that all buses are routed to traffic flows, and rarely "round trip." There were NO buses going to the BWV, only coming FROM BWV. It was then that I wished I had gotten the MGM bus from the CR and boated over, however, the bus drivers, being solid Disney employees, managed to find a bus that could take us the BWV, even though it was not scheduled to do so.

Once there, I checked in to our communal 2 bedroom, and signed for a new, BW wheelchair. DSs were en route the ME from the airport, which arrived after multiple stops....

p831932390-3.jpg

DS22 and DS20 were both sleep-deprived and hungry. I had the great idea to visit Fresh at the S&D, so we schlepped over there with the wheelchair, and boys' carry on. We evaluated the offerings and decided to try Kouzzina. Schelp all the way back to the BW, and had a decent breakfast.

I am sure they would have like to take a nap, but they know that the room may not ready until 4 - so we head to the pool, while waiting for text from front desk that will tell us our room is ready and what the number is.

p71227742-3.jpg

Somewhere between 2 and 3, our room was ready. Bell services brought my brother's luggage up - then went back and got ours. Time to shower, because we are going to VnA, via Disney transport.

I unpack the food / refrigeratables, throw in the first load of laundry and start unpackage the SECOND food suitcase that DS have brought with them. I left a suitcase with MORE CoB, and another soft-sided cooler ready to load and zip for them. I had frozen more chili, and various meats for making meals. They checked the bag at the airport, it shows up in our room. It's magical!

Next up - Victoria & Albert's

.

To maintain consistency with both the existing VnA reports, as well as the disboards preference for food reviews on the food review thread, I will be posting "over there." 'Fraid you'll have to subscribe to that independently of this particular post.

Click here to view (and subscribe) to the VnA post.

.

It may take some time to complete the VnA posting (although I made some progress today), but for those of you are not in this report for the food, I will resume this thread.....

After VnA, we monorailed to the CR in time to walk over to BLT, and using our official, still-valid (for this purpose) room keys from this morning, we went to the top of BLT - the 16th floor viewing area, so that DSs could watch the fireworks from there:

p767284892-4.jpg

From there, I thinked we walked back to the MK to pick up the bus for BWV.

.

Well, I finished the V&A sidebar, standalone thread and have returned to resume this thread with the barest of memories - few pictures, no notes, here goes.

Well, I know we went to Epcot. Up until the last couple of days, we did whatever was on the plan. Since we are logical people, it is extremely likely that we started the day with PANCAKES. You see, a box of pancakes that only requires water (Krusteaz) can be made on your first morning with a kitchen, even before you get to the grocery store. I brought along some high-grade cinnamon to add, and a medium-sized plastic bottle of Wegman's 2% maple syrup (left the 100% home) and we had a yummy breakfast before heading to the park.

Normally, I start assessing the horizon for boat traffic as soon as we emerge from the BWV lobby. If I think there is a boat that can get us to the park faster than walking (wheelchair, or not), we indulge! Today, DN7 found a nice Mickey-ears balloon floating in the lobby - nobody in sight. My money was on someone realizing it couldn't go to the airport and left it behind, but there was no note of abandonment....

Here is DN7, holding her prize, riding a boat instead of walking to Epcot...

p83006664-4.jpg

Love the fact that you can see the entire BW reflected in the balloon!

... while DN4 had to make do with BWV-Bell-Services generic. We consoled him, telling him it matched his eyes - which last until the balloon popped a few hours later (endless supply of replacement balloons - no problem).

p252662440-4.jpg

This shot included, not for its composition, but for the representation for every family pausing to hand out park passes from the gatekeeper of park passes - here, a member of the Blue Man group....

p452858815-4.jpg

A series of family photos in classic settings....

Geosphere

p380840754-4.jpg

As you can observe, Mickey has lost his protective cover to a ceiling fan...

p463149043-4.jpg

And my favorite / classic Picasso-mosaic of DSiL and DH

p461846985-4.jpg

As for the touring details, I am quite sure we started at Soarin' fast pass at park opening. Picked up FP and took the first ride. I'm sure we did MS, TT, UoE, Land, VoL, AA, and street entertainment of all sorts. We may have even experimented with a mid-day nap or swim, but I just don't know!

.

Next time, pack some chopped pecans for the pancakes! YUM!

I love your photos.

Are you considering the SSMC '11? I just got back from a 5night Key West/Nassau and am already hankering to go back.

Good idea on the pecans - I am very fond of them - always order them when getting pancakes "out" (probably once every other year).

Thanks for sayin'

Possible = yes. Probable = no, as I currently have booked - but not paid in full (true sign of a commitment) for May/Alaska and Dec/Dream. We'll see.

How's DH and "new" job?

I brought the Krusteaz, cinnamon, chopped pecan combo on the trip when we had a 1 bdrm with Eric's mom. Winner of an idea and I'll do it again in a heartbeat. I may also steal your frozen chili icecube idea :goodvibes

I'm kind of in the same boat (hah!) on the SSMC '11. Eric didn't really love the member cruise, but I really want to get on the Dream. We'll see what happens. Either way, we should plan another meet-up!

He's loving it. He's away on a conference for the software they use this week. We had to meet up in the airport between my arriving and his departing flight on Sunday, or we wouldn't have seen each other for two weeks! He feels challenged and valued, which are very important to him.

I like the member cruise - it is just that our sons like to cruise to, at the DVC-DCL has always been during the academic year. Like the programming, people and double-dip at Castaway Cay. I checked out the Peguins / Sabres games - unfortunately, one is Thanksgiving Eve (sure to be a big seller on StubHub) and the other not one we'll be able to attend. We'll think of something! Did you ever to get to V&A?
