June 29, 2011-10 "MAGICAL" nights in the Mediterranean

We got in to the hotel this evening. Sorry we got in so late and missed the tapas dinner.

I guess our consolation prize was a business group was having a Flamenco dancer perform by the pool, so we sat out on the balcony and watched the show. Very cool!

Planning a quick trip to drive by the Olympic Villa on the way to the cruise ship tomorrow morning.

See you guys on board around 3:00!!

Thanks for organizing a great dinner, Cam! We had a great time meeting everyone. The meal was delicious and we really enjoyed the evening. Look g forward to seeing everyone on the ship tomorrow.

We´ve had another fabulous day in Barcelona. We toured La Sagrada Familia with Dorothy and her family, spent a lovely time at the rooftop pool at our hotel and then headed to Tapas Tapas for our DIS group dinner. It was so wonderful meeting everyone! I thought the food was delicious and plentiful and the service was excellent. Thanks to all who came! I think it was especially great for all the young people to meet. It seemed as if they all enjoyed themselves. We missed those who couldn´t make it. See everyone on Wednesday at 3pm at the Promenade Lounge on Deck 3!!

We love Barcelona! Yesterday we went to Montserrat. Today we went to La Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell. We are getting ready to head down to Las Ramblas.

Did anyone see Obamas Pub? It´s on Gran Via at Las Ramblas Catalunya. You might spy it heading to the Taller de Tapas tonight. It´s a hoot. Looking forward to meeting everyone this evening!!!

After we left dinner, we walked around for a little bit and passed Obamas Pub! I thought it was funny! They tried to get us to come for a drink but we politely declined.

Thank you, Cam, for organizing a wonderful dinner. I can't wait to visit with everyone more on the ship.

We're trying to go to sleep but we're all too excited about getting on the ship tomorrow! Guess I better turn off the IPad or I'll never go to sleep-

Glad you guys all had a great dinner! Super jealous we aren't there to join you! Still doing some last minute packing, cleaning and schoolwork then going to bed to try and get a few hours of sleep before our flight in the morning!
Can't wait to get on the ship!
See you all at 3!

DCLShel,

I can't thank you enough! My wife and I took the subway this afternoon after reading your post about the Steve Irwin. We made it down to the port and asked the girl at the Tourist Information Center Booth where the boat from the Whale Wars show, called the Steve Irwin, was. She looked at us like we had a third eye (which we don't, for those of you that don't know us!). She had no idea. So we kept walking across the little bridge towards the main dock/port area, and we saw a security/port security guard. We asked him where the boat from the Whale Wars show, called the Steve Irwin, was. He looked at us and said that he had no idea. Ok, we were left to find this thing on our own. We continued down the main sidewalk another hundred yards to the end, turned left and alas, there she was.....the Steve Irwin AND their new boat the Brigitte Bardot. We couldn't believe it. We took the tour, donated some money (tours were free, but they were accepting donations of any amount), and took probably a hundred or so photos. A lady from one of the first crews of the Sea Shepherd, Angela, gave us the tour of the boat and we got to see everything! We took photos of ourselves in the Captain's Chair, "steering", the room the crew hangs out and eats, w/ the helicopter, etc. Our kids are gonna be steaming jealous of us:mad:

Well, all that to say that if I hadn't read your post about that, we wouldn't have walked down there that way to see that ship, so THANK YOU so much. It's been one of the major highlights of our trip, and the cruise hasn't even started yet. If I get to meet you sometime on the DCL ship, I owe you a big hug (or a handshake if you're a dude :-) )

Thanks again, and take care...Bill

Cruise was absolutely awesome in every way.

Great to meet many of you guys, and thanks again for all the help planning. This was our best vacation ever!

:woohoo: I'm glad you found the Steve Irwin and were able to take the tour! :woohoo:

Angela was one of the ladies who did our tour, too. My DH and DD both sat in the Captain's chair to get their pics taken. DD was so excited to be on the boat! We've watched a few episodes since we've been home. I keep saying - "We were on that boat!!" DD rolls her eyes  and then smiles.

I'm sorry we didn't get to meet onboard but I'm glad my post could add a little pixie dust to your trip~ pixiedust:

Hello & Thanks to all. Sorry that we did not get a chance to meet most of you, but after a 4 hour flight delay on Air France at CDG, we were one of the last families to board. What an amazing trip!!! Thanks to all for some of the important info that we were able to put to good use during our cruise. Although this was our 4th cruise, I don't know if we can ever top it. As usual, the crew of the Magic outdid themselves again!! With the exception of the internet access & not winning the jackpot at Bingo, an almost perfect cruise..

THANKS AGAIN TO ALL!!!

Had so so so much fun on board and I know my daughter Mckenna had a great time with many of the kiddos from this board!

Also wanted to say a big thank you for all of the awesome FE gifts, the kids loved finding their gifts every day... plus we never had to buy candy for the movies the whole cruise!

Thank you, all, for adding so much to our already over-the-top-phenomenal cruise!

From touring La Sagrada Familia with Dorothy and her family to the awesome DIS meet tapas dinner the night before boarding the magic, to the 3:00 Promenade Lounge DIS meet to the awesome Palo brunch organized by Taina to all of the amazing FE gifts and seeing and chatting with other DISers throughout the cruise, and spending three days touring Naples, Rome and Florence/Pisa with the Damatos, every experience seemed to top the last. You all contributed so much to enriching our experience and I am so glad that we got to meet so many of you! I can't wait until everyone starts doing trip reports and posting pix. We have thousands of pictures to sort through and I can't wait to re-live the trip when we do.

I hope everyone had safe, on-time, uneventful travels home and that you are all settled and unpacked!

during our few post-cruise nights in spain, i put my daughter's passport in a "safe place" and couldn't remember where! i looked for an hour before bed and decided to continue looking in the morning. that night, i dreamed my search was assisted by a handsome man wearing a Disney Cruise Line pin! haha! it's the ultimate compliment to the DCL/Magic crew that they are now my "dream" helpers!!!

(found the passport the next morning, of course!)

what an amazing cruise - and the FE exchange was a lot of fun for us all!

while the trip is fresh in our heads, i'd love to hear the following from everyone:

FAVORITE EXCURSION (DCL, PRIVATE or ON OWN)?

WHAT YOU WISHED YOU PACKED?

WHAT DID YOU BRING BUT DIDN'T USE?

FAVORITE DINNER ENTREE/DESSERT?

FAVORITE SHOW?

BEST EXAMPLE OF "DISNEY MAGIC" COURTESY/SPECIAL TREATMENT ON SHIP?

ONE SUGGESTION OR AREA OF IMPROVEMENT?

FAVORITE EXCURSION (DCL, PRIVATE or ON OWN)? Rome with a private guide (on own). We packed so much into that day! DH and the kids vote for Pompeii (also on our with a private guide).

WHAT YOU WISHED YOU PACKED? My DD's pirate dress. It was nicely folded, sitting on top of her dresser when we got at home. Sigh.

WHAT DID YOU BRING BUT DIDN'T USE? water shoes for the kids -- the beaches weren't as rocky as we were led to believe. Either that, or they don't have very sensitive feet!

FAVORITE DINNER ENTREE/DESSERT? Palo's lobster ravioli were amazing!

FAVORITE SHOW? Twice Charmed was cute. I don't remember seeing it before.

BEST EXAMPLE OF "DISNEY MAGIC" COURTESY/SPECIAL TREATMENT ON SHIP? We really didn't feel any special magic this cruise.

ONE SUGGESTION OR AREA OF IMPROVEMENT? I loved calling guest services to ask if they had found my son's wave phone. They nicely explained that I had to go to deck 3 in person to ask about all lost and found items. I immediately walked, down, waited in line, and was told that all found wave phones were returned to the rooms and not kept in lost and found. Really? The guy on the phone couldn't tell me that? I found the Shutters staff very confusing with their communication about the photo cd. I was told I had to check all rooms at the kiosk every night to make sure all our pictures were included. When I first brought pictures that were not included, I was told that I needed to give it 48 hours for them to show up. They couldn't print my VAT refund form, told me they'd deliver it to my room, and then didn't.

Those were my only areas of complaint though. We had such an amazing time!! We just love the Disney service. I told DH that my problem is that they set such high expectations that I get upset when something isn't perfect. If they hadn't raised the bar, my "problems" wouldn't seem like problems at all!

what an amazing cruise - and the FE exchange was a lot of fun for us all!

while the trip is fresh in our heads, i'd love to hear the following from everyone:

FAVORITE EXCURSION (DCL, PRIVATE or ON OWN)? This is a tough one - I can't pick just one! Enjoyed Napoli (Positano, Almafi Coast, Sorrento, Pompeii) and Roma with the Keeners via Rome in Limo (although it was a 'whirlwind tour' - too much to see in too little time). Loved MaltaTravelnet tours - blue grotto and old city of Mdina. Already put some comments out on Tripadvisor today! . I have to include dining with Shelly, Lance, and Kiley - it was ALWAYS entertaining. Such fun!

WHAT YOU WISHED YOU PACKED? Got it all! .

WHAT DID YOU BRING BUT DIDN'T USE? Binoculars- should have brought them to the vatican, but I forgot. -

FAVORITE DINNER ENTREE/DESSERT? - The first night I had some kind of sugarless chocolate truffle cake that was REALLY good. Am a dessert girl!

FAVORITE SHOW? Villans tonight. Wait - No - let me edit that. My favorite show was watching Taina, Kim, Howard, Cam at Rockin D Bar - they put on a MIGHTY show that was a riot![
BEST EXAMPLE OF "DISNEY MAGIC" COURTESY/SPECIAL TREATMENT ON SHIP?
mmmm. Everyone was so pleasant. Loved our dining staff and hostess for room.ONE SUGGESTION OR AREA OF IMPROVEMENT?
- I hate to say it - but since I don't have kids, I wanted the Cafe Cove for Adults to have less thundering hurds of children running through the area.

It was so much fun meeting everyone. So many of you I didnt see again (probably because you were in the 'kids' section. Yikes. I avoided that area cause I could).

Just got back late last night (had some travel delays in Barcelona and we missed our transatlantic connection and our luggage is still not here but Brussels airlines gave us food vouchers, then United Airlines gave us more food vouchers so we got to eat alot in Brussels, and my DS stocked up on 5 cans of Pringles, 4 packages of M& M's and 7 sodas and waters for our transatlantic flight with the remaining vouchers! :rotfl: And the transatlantic flight was further delayed so United gave us free travel vouchers to use within the next 90 days - not sure if its domestic or international but that was a nice suprise. :goodvibes It was so great to meet all of you and it made our cruising experience so enjoyable to run into "friends" everywhere - on excursions, in the hot tub, at Rockin' Bar D. So much fun! :)
FAVORITE EXCURSION (DCL, PRIVATE or ON OWN)? This is hard to choose, but I would have to say Cinque Terre and Portoverne again. We took the train straight to Monterroso and was on the beach before 10:30am and beat the crowds. Then we ferried back all the way to La Spezia, getting off in Portoverne for 1 1/2 hours. Very few tourists here and lots of good food shopping (pestos and pastas)! A close second would be our taxi tour in Malta - we arranged it at the pier and went to Mdina, Mosta, Rabatt, the Quai handicrafts village, and the Marsallok fishing village and had a marvelous lunch there. Then later that afternoon we did a seaplane tour over Malta and Gozo. Just incredible! :cloud9: Booked that right at the pier - DH saw the sign and the seaplane as we were exiting the ship that morning.
DS 14's favorite excursion: His 15 min of fame as a passenger in a red convertible ferrari in Eze. He video'ed the spedometer at 160 km per hour on one downhill stretch!

WHAT YOU WISHED YOU PACKED? More motrin. My knees really felt all that hill and step climbing. I ran out and switched to Tylenol the last 2 days.
WHAT DID YOU BRING BUT DIDN'T USE? Reading books. No time.

FAVORITE DINNER ENTREE/DESSERT? The yachtsmen's steak, esp the one served the last night. I actually enjoyed it more than the tenderloin at Palo's.
Favorite dessert - the chocolate souffle at Palo's.

FAVORITE SHOW? All of the nighttime entertainment in Rockin Bar D. This is the first time going so often and dancing so much! Got to work off all those desserts.

BEST EXAMPLE OF "DISNEY MAGIC" COURTESY/SPECIAL TREATMENT ON SHIP?
A bottle of wine to celebrate our 20th anniversary courtesy of our officer friend Lloyd. Such a pleasure to see him always.

ONE SUGGESTION OR AREA OF IMPROVEMENT? A few here. They put a great book in the stateroom called Mediteranean destination guide. This would be helpful to have mailed ahead of time when you get your travel documents as there were lots of valuable tips in there.
Better explanation and "how to" for the VAT tax. It took visiting Shutters twice and a phone call to guest services to get receipts from there combined and get the VAT tax receipt. Also on our DCL excursion at the Perfumer's apprentice, we made a large purchase of perfumes and cosmetics and forgot to ask for a VAT tax receipt. No VAT receipt, no stamp at customs and no VAT reimbursement. Not DCL's fault but a reminder would have been helpful.

We really enjoyed Europe and are hoping that they return in 2013 for some new ports of call. We booked 2 dummy cruises for just that reason! :cool1:

FAVORITE EXCURSION (DCL, PRIVATE or ON OWN)? I have two: #1 - Our day in Naples. We booked a private tour through AP Tours with a private guide at Pompeii. After Pompeii, we climbed Mt. Vesuvius. This was awesome! We then went to Herculaneum but we only stayed a half hour because we were just exhausted.

#2 - The Day on the Farm excursion through Disney. We got to spend the day with Laura, Alex & Bella (thinkoflaura) and really get to know them. I did have some issues with the actual excursion (which I left on my comment card) but seeing Kiley & Bella sleeping together on the bus was priceless!!

WHAT YOU WISHED YOU PACKED? Binoculars

WHAT DID YOU BRING BUT DIDN'T USE? Lots of clothes! I always overpack!!

FAVORITE DINNER ENTREE/DESSERT? The 4th of July dinner menu. What a treat to have fried chicken, ribs and corn on the cob!! (all the dinners were pretty darn good! And props to our tablemates - Dorothy, Paul & McKenna!)

FAVORITE SHOW? Hmmm - getting picked to play "Who Wants to be a Mousekateer" with Kiley. We made it to the final question but didn't win :sad2:

BEST EXAMPLE OF "DISNEY MAGIC" COURTESY/SPECIAL TREATMENT ON SHIP?
We had issues one night with our stateroom toilet - it wouldn't flush. It happened right as we were going to bed. I called Guest Services to let them know. The next morning, the problem was fixed. It didn't really affect us since we were sleeping while they fixed the problem. Later we found a bottle of wine in our room with a nice note thanking us for being patient while the problem was fixed.

ONE SUGGESTION OR AREA OF IMPROVEMENT? As mentioned above, we did the Day on the Farm excursion through Disney. At first, this excursion was going great. Our bus arrived at the farm and we were escorted into a room where the bread making demostration started. We were given delicious bread to sample and some homemade wine to taste. The size of the group was perfect. All the kids were able to participate in the bread making and the parents could stand back, watch and take pictures. Then a second bus from Disney showed up and all hell broke loose!

I'm sure the second group felt like they were missing out since the demonstration had already started. The room became sooo crowded, you couldn't see anything going on. This got significantly worse when the cheese making started in the little kitchen. The kids had to jockey for position just to TRY to participate. I ended up standing on a chair to try to find my DD. It was very chaotic!

Disney either needs to limit the number of people for this excursion or stagger the arrival time of the buses.

Overall, this was a great trip and my family has so many wonderful memories! And, we made so many new friends~ Thank you, DisBoards!

I can't believe it's over! We got back home Monday night. I am back to work today... sort of. :tilt:

We had such a wonderful trip!! We really enjoyed meeting so many of you :goodvibes! I wish I would have gotten to meet everyone. :sad1: Maybe a reunion in two years? We booked a place holder in hopes that the Magic will be back in 2013. Would LOVE to sail from Venice!

A special thanks to Cam and Taina for coordinating that pre-cruise dinner and the Palo brunch!!! We enjoyed both immensely!

FAVORITE EXCURSION (DCL, PRIVATE or ON OWN)? On our own with Italian friends our day at Naples could not be topped! We visited Herculeum, stopped at a restaurant part way up Vesuvius and ate a delicious lunch while enjoying beautiful veiws and then traveled to the top of Vesuvius. Words cannot even describe what a day this was for us to spend with special friends, see amazing sites and enjoy a delicious meal. :cloud9:

WHAT YOU WISHED YOU PACKED? A bottle of extra energy :rotfl: In the evening we were so tired... didn't make it to Rockin' D too many nights!

WHAT DID YOU BRING BUT DIDN'T USE? Umbrella -because the weather was beautiful! And books!! I barely made my way into the first one and silly me, I brought a back-up thinking that I would get through two.

FAVORITE DINNER ENTREE/DESSERT? Palo dinner was my favorite meal... soup to nuts! And the chocolate souffle is my all time favorite dessert. As for the main dining rooms, my two favorite entrees were the sea bass and the osso buco.

FAVORITE SHOW? Twice Charmed! I liked all of them but this was my favorite.

BEST EXAMPLE OF "DISNEY MAGIC" COURTESY/SPECIAL TREATMENT ON SHIP? There isn't anything that stands out. We had very good service overall (waiters, cabin steward, etc.) but there wasn't any special "magic".

ONE SUGGESTION OR AREA OF IMPROVEMENT? I am so with Shelly about the Palermo excursion. When that second bus arrived it was too many. The only good thing was that we were on the first bus. I felt bad for the people that showed up on the second bus.

There were some little annoying things that we encountered on the ship but nothing major.

love hearing all your stories... keep them coming!

here are mine...

FAVORITE EXCURSION (DCL, PRIVATE or ON OWN)? Agree 100% on the Palermo/Farm experience... got too crowded and clearly the "farm" part wasn't thought out because when we got to the milking the cow portion, it was total chaos. But my DD6 Bella is head over heels crazy about Shelly's daughter Kiley - I can't imagine a better gift to come out of that excursion. (And I am pretty crazy about Shelly myself!!) :)

otherwise, our day in on our own in Cinque Terre/Portovenere was my favorite... took the ferry from the La Spezia port to Vernazza, wandered, then ferrried back to Portovenere... hung there for 2 hours and then back to the ship. perfect, peaceful, found free wifi at a cafe! :)

WHAT YOU WISHED YOU PACKED?
large, lined post-its. after highlighting the navigators, it would have been helpful to write up a little "itinerary" for the day. luckily some FE gifts included post-its! :)

WHAT DID YOU BRING BUT DIDN'T USE?
rain jackets and too much clothes.

FAVORITE DINNER ENTREE/DESSERT?
beef short ribs (forget the theme night...) and the chocolate lava cake. UNREAL.

FAVORITE SHOW? I loved "Once Upon a Song" -- I could have listened to those performers all night.

BEST EXAMPLE OF "DISNEY MAGIC" COURTESY/SPECIAL TREATMENT ON SHIP? As a first time cruiser, i have to say i was overwhelmed by the courtesy of all the crew. i felt so well-taken care of. it was something i'll never forget and will keep me loyal to DCL for life. Specifically, I felt the folks in Guest Services (including Lloyd!!) were amazing with my mom who was in a scooter/wheelchair and had some trouble with the "accessible" passageways -- they weren't as accessible as they should have been. The Guest Services crew took the issue very seriously and even issued her (me, since i was paying) a $150 credit as an apology for the difficulties she encountered.

ONE SUGGESTION OR AREA OF IMPROVEMENT?
i actually wish the middle pool was bigger... the kid/slide one was great for my daughter to enjoy solo... and the cove was divine for me and DH... but i felt that middle pool was too cramped and deep to enjoy with my DD6. the bigger kids were jumping/splashing, there was no part shallow enough for her to stand or edges to hold on to... it wasn't really an option for us to relax in together.
