June 16, 2014 Wonder to Alaska

Hi everyone! We just got back home from DCL cruise number 5, 6 day western Caribbean from Galveston on the Magic. While on board we booked th 6/16/14 to Alaska. We got one of the "secret porthole" rooms on deck 5 forward. We had one when we did a 10 day cruise 6 years ago and loved it. We did realize, however, that nights might be rough as we are going to be sailing over the summer solstice, longest day of the year! Oh well, it will be fun to have the window anyway, lol!

15 months and I am sooo excited already. I have to contain myself at home so as not to annoy hubby too much, lol.

Have we gotten the FE group started yet?? We had so many people in our group on this trip we had to split it into two groups and we still had 19 families in our group! I had an entire suitcase of nothing but FE goodies and he about lost it at that so I will have to go smaller the next time but will still have a lot of fun!

I haven't yet had time to go back and read the previous posts but will try to do so.

It will be myself, my DH David and our DD Sam(antha) who will be 17 at the time we cruise. Hopefully we can get the teens to start communicating early, maybe even their own facebook page?? We booked the last one so late that she didn't get a chance to "meet" anyone so spent the entire cruise either hanging out with me or complaining about not knowing anyone. We live in Texas but are originally from Indiana (ok, DH and DD are, I am from all over....). The cruise will add one more state to my list of states I have been in, leaving only two more to go (Oregon and Mississippi).

Looking forward to getting to know folks over the next 15 months!

Just put in a request to join the facebook group too!

Welcome to the group!!! It's nice to meet someone not only from Texas, but with a daughter who will be 17 too. My daughter, Tatiana, is also very excited to go to Alaska again. It will be an amazing trip. Where in Texas are you? We are in San Antonio.

The FE group list is up and there is a self-sign up on the first post. Feel free to join. If it gets too big we definitely will be splitting it into smaller groups with the option of joining one or both.

And if you are excited, like all of us are, this is the place for you! You can get your excitement out here and then be somewhat contained for your husband ;-)

Looking forward to getting to know you!

Heather,

Just got a chance to get on here and respond. Sorry to here about all the C going on in your family. It really feels unfair when it attacks people we love. I lost my grandmother to it years ago when the knowledge of treatment wasn't readily known. I hope and believe treatment has come a long way since then. Sending well wishes to them.

Thanks for the posting that your room was available. I was able to get it. That made our excitement about this cruise go up a notch. I battled when booking originally which rooms to get and decided not to pay the extra $$ for a verandah room. We have 6 and just decided on the connecting rooms on the 2nd floor. A few days before your post, we were lucky enough to receive a PIN code from Disney. The battle in my head to switch rooms started again. I thought about a navigators room, but decided that I didn't want to split us up into two non-connecting rooms. Decided to keep the rooms we had. Then... your post on here. I figured it was an opportunity we shouldn't pass up. So, I sent another email to my travel agent and was able to book your room and an inside cabin across the hall. Still not sure about the non-connecting rooms, but know we are looking forward to the verandah room. Just hope the temperature is nice.

Have fun on your cruise this June. I do wish ours was closer. Let us know how the weather was and any suggestions on excursions are appreciated.

Hi!! :wave2: Thanks for your kind words - I really appreciate it! :) I am so very glad and excited that you were able to get our cabin! I posted it with the intent someone could share our joy and you went through the exact thoughts we did! Should we, shouldn't we, omg - it's open, what should we do - go for it!! I can't wait to hear what you think about it. It definitely made us a little more excited. We have a true Cat 7A now on deck 5 for our new sailing and it's obviously still aft, what we wanted, but secretly if we were upgraded I wouldn't mind but I think my DS now has his heart set on a true Navigators.

My checkin is Monday night at midnight so I'm excited to check in, secure an excursion or two and we might do a Palo Brunch.

Take care and thanks for posting back and letting me know - it really put a smile on my face!

We are up in Sherman, north of Dallas. We just got back from 6 days on the Magic yesterday and I so miss it already! We sailed out of Galveston and it was fun to have so many people from Texas on the cruise. There was even another family from Sherman, and lots from SA, Houston area, etc.

I do hope that we can get to know folks in the group better before sailing. Did that 6 years ago and it was so much fun once we got on board because we felt like we knew people. We even arranged to be tablemates with one of the other families at dinner and we still keep in touch with them!

Sounds like we have a great group....looking forward to getting to know everyone and eventually meet everyone too!

We were on the Feb 5 cruise out of Galveston and loved the short drive there! We are doing it again April 12. Just a 4-night, but still a little getaway.

I posted the link to the Facebook page on the first post of this thread so new members can easily find it. :yay:

Hey Kat!

Glad you booked your Alaskan cruise with us. My DS will be 17 at the time of the cruise too. I am hoping that he can meet some more teenagers his age to hang out with. He did fine on our 3 day in January, but thinking a 7 day will be more enjoyable if he had someone his age to hang out with. A fb page where all the teens can get to know each other is a good idea :thumbsup2

She didn't hang out with anyone a couple of weeks ago because she won't walk up and talk to people she doesn't know which makes me sad. She is very into anime/manga, scary movies, animals and music so if anyone else has teens into any or all of that maybe she will be more willing to try. Oh, and she likes this guy too :darth:

Got quiet here all of a sudden!

I keep seeing fun little Disney things at the stores and think about how fun they would be as fe gifts, but we are so far out I don't want to start collecting things yet. Especially not knowing how many, etc. Also, with the travel involved DH has already said I am not allowed to go to the extreme I did earlier this month where I filled an entire suitcase with the stuff I brought!! I do want to try and find a neat Disney dry erase board (small), though. I wish I still had my PoTC one, that was so much fun! Ah well.....

My son is into music as well. He also plays trumpet in the school band and in the church orchestra. My daughter who will be 14, is into anime/manga and animals. We know they have those things in common. :cool1:

It may have got quiet here, but I'm steadily planning. Enjoying the daily posts this week from DCL on fb about Alaska. Also enjoying ideas for fe gifts. I'm not gonna allow myself to buy anything until it gets much closer. Are we there yet?

Unfortunately it will be a while before we are there! But I just live one day at a time and it will come....

Yeah, I agree on not buying stuff until we are closer :)

Trying to come up with magnet designs...gotta decorate that door, lol!!!
This is what we had in March

I'd like to hear others plans for getting to Vancouver. Especially those that have been there before. There are so many options to consider. Pike's market in Seattle is def. on my bucket list.

I think our plan (right now) is to fly to Seattle a day or two early, rent a vehicle and spend the day in Seattle. Drive to Vancouver and keep the vehicle. There's a hotel by the port that will let us keep the car there as long as we stay there. Turns out it's only a few dollars more to keep the car for 8 days then it is to rent in US and return in CA. Then spend a day or two recovering after the cruise in Vancouver and head back to Seattle.

I know there is a train that runs from Seattle to Vancouver which might be another option but I don't know. It would be nice to store extra 'non-cruise' items while we're cruising.

Anyone else have plans yet?

Our plans most likely will be the same as they were in 2011. Fly to Vancouver a couple of days early, take their rail system to our Hampton Inn, about two blocks from the rail stop, and have the hotel transport us to port.
We have to be budget-minded, and that was the best for our budget last time. Excited to spend a couple of days in Canada.
