We looked at the seward one and between my sister, who's a planner, and her TA they both said to do it right you would need to do those add on..cruise tours? anyways, it was just too much $$.Stephanie
Ahhh, but you DON'T have to do a pre-planned cruise tour. Its easy to plan yourself, and it costs less. I had said I would post our itinerary, so here goes. Keep in mind that I tend to go all out. It would be easy to cut back some of this stuff to get the price down a bit. Also, when booking flights I found that it is much cheaper to fly home from Anchorage instead of Fairbanks which is why the itinerary doesnt continue to Fairbanks after visiting Denali. I also found that in terms of cruise pricing, the earlier in June the better/cheaper.
Day 1 - Fly into Vancouver and spend a night OR drive to Whistler and spend a night or 2 pre-cruise.

Day 3 - Inside Passage cruising
Day 4 - Juneau, AK
Day 5 - Skagway
Day 6 - Icy Strait Point
Day 7 - Hubbard Glacier cruising
Day 8 - Seward, AK - Disembark in morning and tour the Sealife Center . . .

Day 14 - Depart Denali via motor coach at 7:20am. Arrive in Talkeetna at 10:30am. Overnight at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge . . .
http://www.talkeetnalodge.com/
Note: This is the best place to do a flight tour of Mt McKinley if you have time.
Day 15 - Depart Talkeetna via motor coach at 11:00am - arrive Anchorage at 1:30. Fly home.
The TOTAL PRICE without food and activities is $13,126 for a family of 4 and $9,030 for 2 people. That includes a balcony stateroom (D1 category) on the Royal Caribbean cruise (the price on the cruise only was $5,000 for 4 and $3,600 for 2 - this includes a 5% discount when booking with Discover card). When we planned this, we decided to NOT do ship excursions since they tend to be very expensive, but to do the activities while on the land portion to cut down on our costs. Please note that the activities can be very expensive and can increase your cost dramatically. The Frommers Alaska book is great and has lots of suggestions for things in port that you can do on your own.
Ways to get the cost down -
1. Dont do the Fox overnight and just do a day trip.
2. When taking the train to Denali, dont do Gold Star service. You can downgrade and save.
3. There is a book that you can purchase that has tons of Alaska discount coupons on hotels and activities. When I researched it, it seemed to be worth purchasing. I seem to remember a discount on the Denali Princess hotel in there among some other stuff.
Have fun planning!
