July 9th 2005 - West Coast Cruise.

Welcome aboard Buzz, Lola, Megan, and Jay! Very nice to me ya'll! :)

Let's get everyone in the spirit for our Scavenger Hunt aboard the Magic. To get some practice, how's about a Cyber Hunt? Questions are broad and varied, and can be found via the Internet. We'll start off easy......

Name the author and title of the following:

"Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
" 'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door;
Only this, and nothing more."

The Raven - Edgar Allen Poe.

I distinctly remember that one from HS English. It's funny because one of the colorguards this year did their show to a narration of this poem and the first time we saw it, I was able to indentify the poem immediately. Until then, I didn't think I remembered anything from HS English!

Excellent job! Kudos to Sheila! Thanks for sharing too (I was hoping we'd learn some fun facts about our fellow cruisers while playing!).

Okay, let's go on to the next question?

Where can these lyrics from a popular children's series be found? Name the TV station and program, the person who is typically associated, and where can one of the infamous red sweaters be found.

It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.

That would be the late, lamemted Fred Rodgers on Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood found on PBS. Can't tell you about the sweater, but I'd guess e-bay has one if you wait long enough.

Here's a challenge - Identify this (moderately obscure) quote:

Hark, hark, the dogs do bark,
But only one in three
They bark at those in velvet gowns,
They never bark at me.

The Duke is fond of velvet gowns
He'll ask you all to tea.
But I'm in rags, and I'm in tags,
He'll never send for me.

Hark, hark, the dogs do bark,
The Duke is fond of kittens.
He likes to take their insides out,
And use their fur for mittens.

I'll take a stab at this one; not sure if it's right. During the Tudor period in England, thousands of people were without jobs. With no income, they were forced to beg in the city streets. The velvet gowns refer to stolen property? Another possibility says that the beggars were the Dutch, who came to England in 1688 and their King, William III is thought to be the one in the velvet gown.

E-Bay?! I like that answer! And that could be a true statement! One of Fred's bright red cardigan sweaters (knitted by his late mother) is enshrined in the Smithsonian's National Museum.

Offwego--is your Megan the 8 yr. old? My Megan is 8 also. I see you spell her name the correct way :). Welcome aboard!

BTW--our offer on the 2nd house was accepted. Let's hope this one sticks.

Ryan just got out of school for summer break  . That must mean we're cruising soon! Megan has 2 more weeks.

Nice guesses - When did I tell you that I was a history major? Unfortunately, it's not correct. This poem comes from a work of fiction, and the character that declaims it is Xingu... (How's that for a hint?)

Sara

:confused3 :confused3 :confused3 OK, how do I make my pc ring or chime or somehow call for me when Sara posts a clue? I knew those (ok, not the Xingu-thingy .... ) You were hoping to learn something about us while we play? If I win, I'll tell you anything you want to know ..... about Chris :rotfl2:

Oh, man, I got the wrong answer?! Bummer! Do another one Sara. Please?

Can I let this one sit overnight to see if anyone gets it? I'll come up with something Disney related tomorrow...

Sara

Ok Sara, I would have never known this answer but you can find anything on the internet. Is that cheating?

So what I found is The 13 Clocks by James Thurber. Am I right?

Can you give us something a little easier next time?

Oh, and are we still doing the scavenger hunt on the ship? My girls really want to do it.

Hayesktrm,
Yes, our 8 y.o. is Megan. I just showed her your post, and she's thrilled! We've been prepping our kids re: Oceaneer Club registration, b/c Megan will be in the 8-9 group, and Jay will be in the 5-7 group. Megan is excited about the opportunity "away" from her little brother, but Jay isn't quite as happy yet. He knows that once he meets a few of the 'guys,' everything will work out fine.
We're ordering shirts with Craig's help, and I'm looking for the appropriate outfit for Pirate Night. Anybody know which night that will be? I vote for every night!

Wow Craig! Thanks. This helps so much in the planning process. I can't wait!

Offwego--my Megan is very excited, too to meet another Megan her age. Kim also has an 8 yr. old so that will be nice for the 3 of them to pal around together in the club. From our group, there are lots of girls in the younger group, I don't see boys, though. I am sure he'll make a friend right away.

Read the Navigators and Christine wanted to go shopping. Christine needed an extra suitcase for Quinton and ended up buying all new luggage. At boarding, look for me. I will be the penny-less disser with the million dollar luggage. :sad2: :charac2:

We will be on this cruise also!!! It will be me, my mom, and my DD (13). Anyone else have daughters that age? Her 14th birthday is July 17th (same day as Disneyland), so we will be heading over there for the bash after the cruise.

Karen...Alexis met soccermom and dad's DD Cassie at the 5/28 DIS meet. I think she was talking about possibly moving up to the Lab as well! The girls are going to have so much fun!!! :cheer2: I took the Brownie troop for a horseback riding lesson today. They had a blast, and Alexis can't wait to ride on the beach in Mexico. The instructor said she was a natural...and she had her trotting and turning on her own in no time! Only 34 more days to go!!
