July 7, 2014 Alaska RT Vancouver on Wonder

I would be happy to coordinate the fish extended list. Everyone cool with that?

Usually we set a deadline to sign up, and take people after that on an optional basis.

How about May 15th? That gives us time for all the last minute people. Let me know. Here is my info, I can update this post as needed.

We have two cabins, but that is where the FE for everyone will be.

Might be a good idea to post any allergies or special needs in the cabin, for the FE gifts. I know mine includes a food component.

Cant wait to meet everyone!

My sister and I (both 30s) took our first cruise last March on the Fantasy and signed up for Alaska before we got off the ship!

This will be my first time to the both Vancouver and Alaska, and I'm hoping to add a few days before the cruise.

Twindaddy, thanks for volunteering to coordinate the fish extender list. We'll definitely participate.

Awesome! I am a teacher, and I have a countdown in my classroom. It is at 265 right now, no one has asked me about it yet.

Can everyone who has posted so far please post again with your name, ages, gender, and cabin number? Thanks

Is anyone interested in a cabin crawl, where you go around and see different types of cabins?

Awesome! Welcome aboard. Our cabins will be very easy to find, with all the magnets and FE's on our doors.

Hi, this is my family's first cruise! :thumbsup2 I was wondering what fish extenders are? I heard of them but don't really understand. Lol:confused3

Welcome aboard! Please post your name, ages, and cabin number so we can include you in the fish extender group.

Wait, but what is a fish extender?

Here is a great thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1219607

Basically, outside each door on disney ships is a little metal fish clip. They use it to hold notes from guest services, ECT. People hang bags / felt pockets from them, and then they trade gifts with other cruisers. About a month before we cruise, we will have a list of everyone (who wants to join), their names, cabin numbers, ages, genders, ECT. Then you make a little gift for everyone, and on one of the cruise days you go around to each cabin putting them in people fish extenders. I have a nice one I bought on etsy for 50 bucks, custom with our names, but I have seen someone hang a felt bag from the grocery store. That is FINE, dont stress about it.

It sounds weird, but you will LOVE it. You come back to your room from dinner or wherever and there are little gifts waiting for you. Google "fish extender gifts" and you will see a ton of ideas, usually something small and inexpensive and easy to pack. I have seen packs of pretzels, magnets, gifts from someones home area, ECT.

It is one of the best parts of Disney cruising. If you have kids, they will go crazy for it, it is like Christmas morning everytime you come back to your cabin.

I hope you will join our group. Let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you so much! I need to talk to my mom about fish extenders and she might not want to. But it sounds like a lot of fun! And one more question: Is there pin trading on the cruises?

Yes, there are pin trading meet ups with the ships officers, and other crew.

Tell your mom to read this thread, hopefully you can join our fish extender group. It is a ton of fun!

So I have another question. Has anybody ever had trouble bringing the gifts received back across into Canada? Do you have to pay duty on the gifts you bring back?

If that's confusing, don't worry, it confused mo too lol. How do the border people know they are gifts? I don't really know how to put it...

Since the cruise ends in Vancouver, are you asking if there will be any problem bringing the gifts back to the U.S? I believe each traveler is allowed to bring $800 in goods back to the U.S tax-free after a trip abroad. It doesn't matter whether you buy them or receive as gifts. Since the fish extender gifts are inexpensive, it's unlikely you'll go over the limit. Hope this helps.

We live in Canada but since we go into Alaska do you think we will have any trouble? Thanks a lot! :)

Ah...now I understand your question. I looked this up and Canada also has an $800 per person exemption, so taxes shouldn't be an issue.

Thank you so much! But if you don't know how much each gift cost, what do you tell the border people?

Every cruise I have been on, I just put "cruise merchandise" $50. If our groups stays small, it will be even less. These are small gifts, nothing extravagant. In my experience going through customs, they barely look at the form. Maybe I dont look like a terrorist or something.

Trust me, it is one of the funnest parts of the cruise...you come back to your room and find little gifts every day.

Anyone else getting excited about the cruise?

Thank you guys for all your help. My siblings and I really want to do this, and will try to convince my mom, but it doesn't look good right now. She gets mad whenever we mention it but if she changes her mind we will let you know. Thanks again!

Dont stress about it. What part of it is she against? Even if you dont participate, maybe I will drop off some goodies at your stateroom :)

Either way, it is going to be an awesome cruise!
